trying to imagine a person with Michael Rapaport posters all around their house.

like, dreamy soft-focus Tiger Beat-style foldout posters where you can still see the creases and he's like reclining on a leopard-print chaise

All I know about Michael Rappaport's personally life is that he was Natasha Lyonne's landlord and had to evict her and recently had a podcast beef with Bill Burr.

The smart move would be to distribute it for free, but I'm no longer convinced that he knows what smart moves are.

Simon H., Saturday, 9 December 2017 08:41 (six years ago) link

The smart move might be to bury in a time capsule for 5 years, but your second clause is otm.

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 9 December 2017 09:42 (six years ago) link

smarter still might be just to bury it, retire from a career in entertainment, and quietly raise his daughters in obscurity

Mr. Dworman said that as a business owner, he was in a difficult position. “I understand that some people will be upset with me. I care about my customers very much. Every complaint goes through me like a knife. And I care about doing the right thing.”

But, he added, “there can’t be a permanent life sentence on someone who does something wrong.” The social standards about how to respond to errant behavior are inconsistent, he said, and now shifting ever faster, and audiences should have the leeway to decide what to watch themselves. “I think we’ll be better off as a society if we stop looking to the bottlenecks of distribution — Twitter, Netflix, Facebook or comedy clubs — to filter the world for us.”

look we can't expect a man guilty only of ejaculating in front of numerous unwilling women to endure a life sentence of staying home, spending time with his family, and enjoying the fruits of his independent wealth, that's frankly ridiculous

my dream is to never be a champion (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 10:17 (five years ago) link

he did a 15-minute set that touched on what Mr. Dworman called “typical Louis C.K. stuff” — racism, waitresses’ tips, parades. “It sounded just like he was trying to work out some new material, almost like any time of the last 10 years he would come in at the beginning of a new act.”

seems really bizarre to get up in front of people and not even acknowledge the elephant in the room

def xxp

if your career is built on the appearance of honest self-criticism and then you can't or won't be honest about being a total creep when you attempt a comeback then either you're a coward or your career was built on dishonest self-representation and neither of those are good looks

really he should just fuck off, who gives a shit about what he has to say about waitresses' tips

my dream is to never be a champion (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 15:06 (five years ago) link

I thought the whole problem was that he kept forcing other people to acknowledge the elephant in the room.

Louis CK being "banished" from stand-up comedy wasn't some kind of petty punishment, it was a fucking workplace safety issue.

just practically speaking, idk how he has any kind of career in the near future unless he wants to pivot to full-on MRA or something. maybe I'm being naive but I have a hard time imagining most of his original fan base coming back to him right now. I paid to see him perform five times I think and there's no way in hell I'd give him my money today.

evol j, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 15:17 (five years ago) link

i think he'd do fine but i also have a low opinion of the kind of people who call stand ups geniuses

he will totally have a "comeback"

but the inherent disconnection/connections between what he's done and his onstage persona makes enjoying his material nearly impossible for me

maybe, but I do think the audience would be markedly different. Louis isn't Dane Cook or Kevin Hart or some massively popular big-tent guy. I think his crowds were substantially progressive/media-savvy/woke and simply from a "performing your own virtue" standpoint I don't know what percentage of those people would be back on board with him. I think it would be especially pronounced outside of the big cities...maybe his audience in NY or LA or Boston would be fairly similar but I don't know if the same would be true in Durham or Nashville or Tulsa.

How many of these people do you think filled three nights at Madison Square Garden?

yes. to be that popular, morons are always involved.

I have a feeling there's a ton of men who think MeToo went "too far" and what Louis did "y'know, wasn't really that bad" and would be eager to show support.

Based on what I've seen in the reactions to the takes from other comedians who I follow on Twitter, Louis is gonna be juuuuuuuust fine.

Eliza D., Tuesday, 28 August 2018 16:42 (five years ago) link

I really do love that this thread is dissolving into a taxonomy of an arena-filling comedians fans. Do Kevin Hart next!

I can't think of anything more American than pretending everything is ok after some incredibly fucked up drama because god forbid we engage in any form of uncomfortable introspection and make ourselves better people afterwards. See: Reconstruction.

i doubt he'll get the same "wise teller of truths" platform he received from every late night talk show though, i do suspect a large part of his previous world is going to remain closed off to him.

this is a definitely a thing. "weinstein is a serial rapist, louis just masturbated in front of a few people, what's the big deal?"

on one hand, being a sex creep is bad but on the other hand i really want to hear this middle aged white guy's takes on parades and racism

omar little, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 16:49 (five years ago) link

The infuriating thing is that none of the people angling for a comeback has done anything to deserve it? They've just gone away for a while and hoped that things would die down. They all hurt people but none have tried to help. Louis even seemed to have realized years back that what he did was wrong - there was a story that he'd tried and phone people to say he was sorry years back - yet he never did anything to make up for it. He hurt careers, hurt peoples lives, but he just never ever thought that he should do something good for people in exchange.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

Number None, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 17:05 (five years ago) link

i suspect CK will work in some self-flagellating material, and like most material of that kind it will wind up being very self-serving, like it's done to merely add to the complex legend of the man telling the tales. the speaker of harsh truths now turns on himself, whoa.

omar little, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 17:05 (five years ago) link

yeah Louis SUCKS for doing that hypothetical routine
