xp personally, i don't think an ipad would get me through work (which in my case involves lots and lots of word processing, some spreadsheets, some scientific visualization and some graphic design). i occasionally play high-end video games on my laptop. and like i said upthread, i use a laptop for music production. but if my work gave me a laptop i could take home, and i wasn't using a laptop for music, i'd probably just have an ipad.

i know a few medical people that only use an ipad. all they would need a computer for is email, calendaring, looking stuff up on the internet and billing hours (quicken) and the ipad can handle all of that.

the late great, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 23:05 (six years ago) link

iPad seems like it would be great for music production if the software were there. all the twiddly knobs and faders and such.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 23:16 (six years ago) link

there is a pretty cool app called "logic remote" that lets you use the ipad as a controller for logic

http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/apple-logic-remote-ipad-controller-app-what-does-it-do-580192

it's pretty fun, you can set up the ipad as a keyboard (piano style) or pads (like a drum machine) and one person can bang away on it while the other person adjusts the sound parameters on the laptop, etc

the late great, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 23:29 (six years ago) link

There is fantastic software for the ipad to do all kinds of music. I think there are two competing technologies for routing but you can basically synchronize and interconnect any number of sequencers, synthesizers, effects processors etc all within the ipad.

Yeah work made me "upgrade" from my 2012 MBP Retina when the battery started to glitch out. Aside from being slightly thinner there is not a single thing I like better about the new model. Aside from the pointless touchbar the keyboard itself sounds like dropping scrabble pieces into a plastic bucket, making it impossible to write notes quietly during meetings etc. And I had to spend $150 on a metal box having the same ports with a USB-C connector, so that someone accountable only to Jony Ive could achieve design minimalism, or maybe so that 0.02% of owners could attach 4 monitors or something like that.
After a decent interval I am going to attempt battery surgery on the old one.

i replaced the battery in mine recently (at an independent shop for much less than apple wanted) and it's working great

Mordy, Thursday, 16 November 2017 02:01 (six years ago) link

Maybe go to fewer meetings

calstars, Thursday, 16 November 2017 02:25 (six years ago) link

MBP β€˜09 still working great (after maxing out the RAM, changing the battery and installing SSD)!

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 16 November 2017 07:35 (six years ago) link

Calstars I take my laptop to meetings so I can get actual work done during the meeting time which is why I need a quiet keyboard

attention vampire (MatthewK), Thursday, 16 November 2017 08:53 (six years ago) link

ppl who work in their laptops in meetings r disgusting savages soz

I can handle yr judgement more than I can handle an hour of people griping at each other while I am trapped there (I work in a university)

you spoke much truth there

attention vampire (MatthewK), Thursday, 16 November 2017 12:34 (six years ago) link

wait, there are people who don't work during meetings? I guess there are the sleepers.

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 16 November 2017 12:36 (six years ago) link

it drives me absolutely bananas. you have a meeting and half the table is typing on their laptops. it's like being in middle school. "bueller?" uh yes, sorry? ffs just don't come to the meeting if you're 1) not going to listen 2) not going to engage and participate 3) quite openly ignore everyone who is attempting to do those things

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 16 November 2017 12:42 (six years ago) link

Most of what I do is actioning the shit that people decide we should do after the meeting - i.e. "we should circulate that document", "we should check the policy on X and decide if it applied", "someone should make a list of all the people we need to discuss this with" so I just do it right there, instead of going away with a list of yet more stuff to do. So it's pretty engaged but also trying to reduce the impact of yet another fucking meeting on my time, so I can go back to my office and check ILX.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Thursday, 16 November 2017 12:55 (six years ago) link

A guy I know gives a meeting ten minutes then says "I shouldn't be here" and bounces. I've started doing the same, works wonders.

stet, Thursday, 16 November 2017 13:06 (six years ago) link

xpost i'll allow it :)

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 16 November 2017 13:24 (six years ago) link

all of my meetings are laser-focused but i’ve still posted on ilx during them

mh, Thursday, 16 November 2017 13:42 (six years ago) link

I'm just going to change the battery and install an SSD. will cost me 150

||||||||, Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:43 (six years ago) link

Why are laptops allowed in meetings at all? Tracer OTM

and ffs there's a raging cancer of rude people who think it's acceptable to be staring at their phones in meetings

Randall Jarrell (dandydonweiner), Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:51 (six years ago) link

half of my meetings are teleconferences, where you plug the video conference device into your laptop to connect to the rest of the team!

mh, Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:56 (six years ago) link

controversial but: meetings are good

big meetings are horrible though

mh, Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:11 (six years ago) link

Meetings are a necessary evil. When we evolve our collective eusocial shared hive mind we should eliminate them.

Mordy, Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:32 (six years ago) link

I've gotta have a platform for grandstanding, just yapping in the hallway won't cut it

mh, Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:50 (six years ago) link

I like the old joke that the collective iq of a meeting is the iq if the dumbest person in the room, divided by the number of people in the room

wtf y'all I'm typing during a meeting 'cause I'm taking notes like a maniac as my memory is a worthless sieve and if I don't take detailed notes I might as well have not even been there at all

Dan I., Thursday, 16 November 2017 22:40 (six years ago) link

I'm typing during a meeting to get real work done. If someone really cares what I think then I'll stop and say something. Otherwise why give full attention to the blah blah blah?

So many times there are people in meetings who are there just in case the other people need their knowledge and/or opinion on specific things on which they are experts. You want to have these people near if anything comes up for which you need their input but at the same time you don't want to waste an hour of their time, so you invite them to the meeting and let them work on their own things, and a couple of times per meeting you ask them to pay attention and answer some questions. It's the most efficient way to get the work done.

i love it when ilx talks about work (instead of actually working obvs) - we should have a board for it

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 17 November 2017 20:22 (six years ago) link

after one week with the iphone x i like it a lot. i don't miss touchid. faceid is probably slower, i think they make you swipe up to hide this fact, because it doesn't feel slower if you have to gesture. faceid has been very good, only not gotten me maybe once? screen is fantastic.

it also cost me $1250

龜, Friday, 17 November 2017 21:14 (six years ago) link

i played with it in the store and i had a hard time swiping the upper corners when i held it one-handed. are you having issues with that or are you using it two handed?

the late great, Friday, 17 November 2017 21:28 (six years ago) link

I'm instinctivly worried that having to make eye contact to unlock would be a major hassle but I can't really assess whether that is such a problem in real life

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 17 November 2017 21:36 (six years ago) link

yeah there's no way i can swipe from the upper corners with one hand without reachability. i've adapted to using two

eye contact - it's not really eye contact more just like eye direction of the screen. it actually works too if i have my head tilted down parallel to screen but eyes looking at something above and in the distance it won't unlock

龜, Friday, 17 November 2017 21:48 (six years ago) link

I sadly returned mine. I gave it the full 2 weeks, but it was immediately causing pain behind my eyes every time I looked at it. Haven't had any more pain since returning. Might go with an 8 on black friday, but may just hold onto my 6 until next year.

the late great, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:10 (six years ago) link

a little bigger, a little dimmer tbh

bought a little inductive charger buddy for my desk at work but slamming all the apps back from backup is taking a toll

plus you can’t play with the phone while it’s sitting there, so I’m cable tethered for the moment
