remember that time when bono paid £1,000 for a first class air ticket for his hat so that he could wear it at a charity concert?

Laetitia Sadier is a class act all the way

Isn't she in with the Living Marxism crowd? I mean, I hope she isn't, but have heard as much on here.

LM the zine?

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 23:23 (six years ago) link

You might be confusing her with Rosie Cuckston of Pram?

Xxxxxpost:

Ah yes Weird Al Yankovic! I love that man, it would break my heart if it turned out he’s secretly evil.

From a 2012 interview on her influences:

Living Marxism Magazine

At the time there was the war in Serbia and a huge fabrication to keep people in their place and keep the systems of Germany and France and their economic hands in those markets. It was well-investigated and although it came from a Marxist background, was always just. It went against the grain and the widely agreed-on political points. They would predict where things would head. What was also good about it was that when things were explained, the root of things were explained. It gives you hope. We don’t have to just sit there and go, “Oh it’s horrible.” It is horrible but defeatable.

I assume she's not as stupid as that quote makes her seem.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 23:30 (six years ago) link

I've never heard anyone say a bad word about Deathprod.

djh, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 23:34 (six years ago) link

I don’t know if it’s fair to judge her by only one interview but Lady Gaga seriously impressed me on her Graham Norton interview. She was very kind to June Brown constantly complimenting her and telling her she was beautiful every time June used self-deprecating humor about her old age, and she was geniunely excited when Graham presented a live feed with one of her fans. Like SERIOUSLY excited. She loves her fans and seems to promote diversity a lot not just to sell records but because she believes it.

You might be right about Sadier and the LM kru, looks like she’s down with Spiked:

Right, so strike her off the good people list.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 23:55 (six years ago) link

JIm Duckworth seems really sound.
So does Kid Congo

& Jule Cruise, Annie Bandez, Linda Perhacs

Stevolende, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 23:59 (six years ago) link

almost said pj harvey but apparently she's defended fox hunting in the past

tbh i'm american and the only fox hunts i've seen are in old cartoons, but sounds p fuckin horrific

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:00 (six years ago) link

So this is basically just gonna be the "awful artists" thread w/ the additional layer of hope first being introduced before it's struck down

You're all losing so many points on your progress bars (Champiness), Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:02 (six years ago) link

This thread is veering into moral McCarthyism fast.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:03 (six years ago) link

Plus a few acts with like six-person fandoms who are so far out of the public eye that even if they were terrible we'd probably never hear about it

You're all losing so many points on your progress bars (Champiness), Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:04 (six years ago) link

xp, idk at this point I feel like putting a "sin list" in the public square isn't entirely unmerited

You're all losing so many points on your progress bars (Champiness), Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:05 (six years ago) link

in fairness the other thread was about ppl who've actually committed horrific crimes, having bad politics or being a jerk in person or being annoying on twitter or w/e don't really compare

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:06 (six years ago) link

A "sin list", really now? Sadier is "bad people" now because she reads Spiked? As evidence presented by some tweets from 2014?

Newsflash: there are no "good people". We are all, in our own way, flawed, awful and bad, at least. Let's not kid ourselves.

xp

"artists who plausibly appear to not be actual demons"

You're all losing so many points on your progress bars (Champiness), Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:09 (six years ago) link

And yeah "sin list" was just me leaning into the moral panic aesthetics a bit
Let's not make this the "music criticism in video form" thread

You're all losing so many points on your progress bars (Champiness), Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:10 (six years ago) link

is prince bad? susan rogers had only nice things to say.

I couldn't care less either way, tbh, being a fool is no crime after all.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:13 (six years ago) link

Champiness, tell me your twitter handle, and I'll tell you why you too are "bad people".

It's easy if you try.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:14 (six years ago) link

Sadier is "bad people" now because she reads Spiked?

Was just trying to answer the question of whether or not she was one of the Living Marxism crowd tbh.

plp will eat itself (NickB), Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:20 (six years ago) link

Oh I know, wasn't directed at you! But something about this turning into some witch hunt def rubbing me the wrong way.

You will not find a single artist/human being that is inherently good, is my point.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:25 (six years ago) link

So this thread is silly then.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:28 (six years ago) link

But, I suppose the criterion is only plausibly good though.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:30 (six years ago) link

Who's judging who is a good person? Maybe we need a recursive thread: 'ILM posters who seem like good people and therefore able to judge if other people are 'sound' (on the basis of secondhand rumour or a 90 second chat), and a 'sin list'.

Luna Schlosser, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:35 (six years ago) link

I think it's a silly thread, yes. But I'm bad people tbh.

Plausibly appear, even.

xp

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 00:35 (six years ago) link

Maybe a better thread might have been ‘yr favourite good deeds done by musicians’. I liked the Danzig anecdotes in the other thread and could bear to hear more.

Hey Le Bateau Ivre, hat in hand, no hard feelings. Just been a tough time lately, is all.
(Plus I barely use my Twitter so, sorry, not much of a paper trail there.)

Yeah agree with this. The other thread is filled with sex criminals, women beaters and racists. Saying an artist isn't a good person because he/she has controversial views on certain things doesn't seem fair to me.

Going back to Shakira I love this anecdote of her:

When she was on Mexico city doing a tour like 12 years ago or so, she spent a whole morning on the children's hospital with cancer patients. My cousin was an intern in that hospital and he told me this one: A girl that was undergoing chemo was very depressed because she lost all her hair and she told Shakira almost crying that she was in love with her hair and wished she had hair like that. Shakira asked for scissors and cut down a lock of her own hair and gave it to her saying "your hair will grow back and it will be beautiful, and here take this, we will grow our hair together." - something along those lines.

It depends. I mean yeah conservatives are usually concealed assholes but it doesn’t mean they’re 100% supportive on each and every point of the agenda.

by "plausibly appear" I meant people who's life is really well documented by this point and there doesn't seem to be anything demonic to it. lemmy seems to be a good example. should have been more clear agree.

that rosie cuckston stuff was depressing to learn a while ago. TBF the one time I met her she was perfectly unpleasant and I spent the entire night with her then husband/boyfriend drunkenly explaining how they were going to break up (they never did apparently from my FB investigations, though he seems to have rational policital ideas unlike her)
