Worldwide Underground is a bit of a step down from the rest of her discog, but everything else is straight-up classic, particularly the New Amerykahs.
Cain't Use My Phone was awesome, if a little slight, with more obvious filler than any of her proper albums. But the great stuff was totally amazing.
― bodak horseman (voodoo chili), Monday, 13 November 2017 14:23 (six years ago) link
I've always thought D'Angelo was a bit overrated (still great!) and Badu consistently underrated. Particularly, yes, the two New Amerykahs. People lose their shit over Voodoo, but these albums are just as ambitious and successful. And Mama's Gun, for that matter.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 November 2017 14:30 (six years ago) link
oh I'll say it:
Badu >>>>>>>>>>>> D'Angelo
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 November 2017 14:36 (six years ago) link
That said, I saw a Badu show once where she spent an eternity rolling around on a pilates ball.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 November 2017 14:42 (six years ago) link
I don't see that as a mitigating factor
― Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Monday, 13 November 2017 14:48 (six years ago) link
Badu = Bjork >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anyone else, basically
Say what u must. Dialogue is cool . I invite it. But please do me a favor if you can , Black & Jewish Twitter, just don't use the word "problematic " any more. 😂Y'all using that too much . 🙄.. oh and read the article.— ErykahBadoula (@fatbellybella) January 24, 2018

the article is awful tho
― khat person (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:18 (six years ago) link
call out culture is bullshit and yes people should stop calling things problematic on twitter but if you can read that interview and not come away from it never wanting to hear anything erykah badou says ever again then youre nuts
― khat person (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:19 (six years ago) link
the interviewer was dumb i thought
erykah was erykah
the little annotations they did were really stupid
― marcos, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:20 (six years ago) link
idk what was different about her in that interview compared to any other interview she's done in the past 20 years?
btw i think about when she said "u on twitter tho, oppressin me" all the time
― marcos, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:21 (six years ago) link
following up a bit about her support for farrakhan and accusations of anti-semitism with "hitler was a wonderful painter" while speaking to a jew is a bit gauche
― khat person (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:30 (six years ago) link
STFU erykah and make some good new music
― (•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:31 (six years ago) link
hitler had real issues with perspective, unsurprisingly
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:32 (six years ago) link
i thought it was funny tbh, esp when she immediately follows up w/ "okay, he was a terrible painter"
― marcos, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:34 (six years ago) link
In general, Erykah Badu has given more to me in my lifetime than the entirety of social media comment threads.
― Tarr Yang Preminger Argento Carpenter (Eric H.), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 20:21 (six years ago) link
I thought the article was great and the interviewer came off much worse than she did.
― grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 20:31 (six years ago) link
If you claim to see some good in every human, Hitler is logical person to mention as an extreme you go to. She wasn't thinking of the larger scope or people cherry-picking this bit. Just backing up her claim.

I found the interview to be a reasonable conversation between two people with different, but defensible, worldviews. I think this is causing a mini-uproar because most Good Internet People expect their heroes to think exactly like they do, and badu just doesn't. good for her imo
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 24 January 2018 21:06 (six years ago) link
uproar around it is nonsense obv
― khat person (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 21:06 (six years ago) link
tbh I thought your comment was similarly silly!
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 24 January 2018 21:08 (six years ago) link
this is just who erykah is, nothing she said really surprised me. and tbh there was nothing I found particularly ~*~*~problematic~*~*~ either

she reminds me of every retired baby boomer ex-hippy i know and i just found the whole interview insufferable, made worst by the dumb hitler comment and like this bit: "Somebody will call me and ask me to come to a march because such and such got shot. In that situation I want to know what really happened. I’m not going to jump up and go march just because I’m green and the person who got shot is green. The rush to get mad doesn’t make sense to me."
― khat person (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 21:14 (six years ago) link
wanting to get facts...ugh insufferable!

are you being deliberately disingenuous or just dumb? generally when someone gets shot in america and there is a march about it the person was murdered by a cop, but of course you know that.
― khat person (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 21:18 (six years ago) link
guys it's Erykah Badu, she lives in her own world and I wouldn't have it any other way

when you hear about an unarmed black man getting shot by the cops is your first reaction "i wonder what happened there, it could've been legit"? no it isn't.
i guess i will leave the stans to it.

I'm being neither, thanks for the false binary. Of course I know that. And I would want to, you know, know as much facts about it as possible before I marched about it. ESPECIALLY if I was a celebrity.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 22:02 (six years ago) link
"another black man was shot by a cop. we're going to march about it. you in?""hmm ok what exactly happened in this case""oh ffs you're insufferable!"

"another black man was shot by a cop. we're going to march about it. you in?""hmm ok what exactly happened in this case"
This is a weird response, though.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 22:27 (six years ago) link
ya how bizarre to want to know about the incident you're going to march about
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 22:32 (six years ago) link
You're marching against police killing black people, seriously, what more do you need to know?
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 22:38 (six years ago) link
"Somebody will call me and ask me to come to a march because such and such got shot. In that situation I want to know what really happened."
So no, she wasn't talking about "marching against police killing black people". She was talking about a hypothetical yet specific killing. To me, it's weird to not want to know about that specific killing.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 22:45 (six years ago) link
She is clearly talking about a BLM march, GD...

― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 22:54 (six years ago) link
I would imagine if people are marching it would not be very difficult to get some info unless she needs to comb over forensic evidence or some shit
― (•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 22:54 (six years ago) link
it's a dumb way to say "I'm not an activist" but are you guys suggesting she's...pro-cop? anti-black? what?
― rob, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 22:58 (six years ago) link
Or she could just freaking ask the person who is calling her...
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 22:58 (six years ago) link
I think she's just trying to say that she resists group-think under all circumstances, even the most obviously righteous ones.
― change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 23:03 (six years ago) link
I agree. And in the process she underlines why that is a bullshit stance, imo.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 23:08 (six years ago) link
seems like she is saying don't just march in the street cos your friends told you do, get educated
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 23:10 (six years ago) link
