Brilliant thank you KM!

So I re-made that script for hiding threads. Here it is for anyone who wants it. Obviously you need Firefox with the Greasemonkey extension for it to work. It's pretty rough but it does the job as far as I'm concerned.

Killfile hasn't worked for me in awhile. On Chrome.

"Flag Post" link should say "Force Push" on days of star wars movie premieres

Why? Standard social media practice

Search function already allows a similar level of creepiness without automation.

El Tomboto, Friday, 29 December 2017 03:03 (six years ago) link

When you search for threads, in the search results maybe the number of posts in a thread could be shown. Not sure if it's worth the effort but I'm just thinking of it being helpful if you're trying to find the most popular threads on topics w/a lot of different threads.

omar little, Friday, 29 December 2017 03:35 (six years ago) link

yes, has been mentioned before, would indeed be helpful

niels, Friday, 29 December 2017 07:34 (six years ago) link

a way to sort search results by the number of posts in each thread. i'm trying to bump the most frequently used grateful dead thread to talk about the new doc, but there's a million threads and in those cases it would be super useful to be able to just pick the one that has the most posts

Also it requires an extra step -- you have to consciously say "ok, I am searching for all of this person's posts" and live with yourself as you sift through that person's scattered posted thoughts looking for whatever it is that you're looking for.

the fact that this is how it's done elsewhere is not persuasive at all for me. one reason i like ilx is because the focus is on the topic of conversation (the thread) instead of the cult of personality that develops (and is developed) by a "follow this person" approach

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 29 December 2017 14:16 (six years ago) link

agree, ILX was a lot more boring for me when it was a place for buddy time ("jackoff sesh" era) or when people are working through their grudges together (same thing as buddy time imo, in a very male way). many of those posters are gone or post infrequently now and it's considerably less boring here (this is another reason why I find twitter inscrutable as something I'd want to do---it seems entirely people focused and ugh at those people, shameless self-promoters and self-absorbed nincompoops)

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 29 December 2017 15:00 (six years ago) link

Well I just thought it would be a way to see what posters I’m a fan of have been up to. I guess I’ll have to learn how to “live with myself” and not feel “creepy” for wanting to read what they have to say.

calstars, Friday, 29 December 2017 15:11 (six years ago) link

yeah one of the brilliant things abt ilx design is having the poster at the bottom of the post. you can often tell who it is and you will gradually build up a sense of ppl's voices and opinions, so it's not like pretending we're in some 90s internet fantasy where identity doesn't matter, but you interact as much with the post as the poster and the interface isn't set up to make the poster into more than that - no avatars or post counts or ranks or easy click-throughs to this person's whole history...idk it could survive some additional features in this department but the current mix is really nice imo.

kolakube (Ross), Friday, 29 December 2017 15:18 (six years ago) link

Speaking of, it is still infuriating that on zing, the posters name is on the top. Why can’t these match?

Jeff, Friday, 29 December 2017 15:19 (six years ago) link

That’s a good point. Zing should do that too

El Tomboto, Friday, 29 December 2017 15:19 (six years ago) link

Lol duh read the thread self

Ha no i meant xp to u

Ilx more boring now.

But i mean if it's creepy it's creepy no arguing with that

I guess so! If you were that interested, you could probably follow them on the social media platform of your choice.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 29 December 2017 15:44 (six years ago) link

ilx is just match.com for pseudointellectuals to find each other off board where the interesting conversations are happening

Mordy, Friday, 29 December 2017 15:48 (six years ago) link

if I wanted interesting off board conversations I'd go to work

but I keep ILE off SNA, I'm really only here for ILM & ILG plus a few ILE bookmarks

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 29 December 2017 15:59 (six years ago) link

Bookmark a user is a cool idea but it would probably lead to people with grudges chasing their nemeses across the boards in order to argue with them.

I would like a wiki, for poll results only.

Image hosting, can we make this happen? Maybe? Registered users only?

calstars, Saturday, 6 January 2018 19:43 (six years ago) link

I have a very cool photo of a Japanese canned coffee I want to share with ilx but Imgur fucking sucks

calstars, Saturday, 6 January 2018 19:45 (six years ago) link

why does imgur suck?

niels, Saturday, 6 January 2018 19:51 (six years ago) link

It’s become more annoying to use since they realized providing a free interface to dump things into S3 wasn’t a business model imo

Image hosting, can we make this happen? Maybe? Registered users only?

this wouldn't be problematic from a technical standpoint with the right constraints in place. but it demands a degree of moderator involvement that we might not be able to support.
It might, however, be good for the boards, because we've had a ton of great posts over the years lose crucial context because of image hosting issues, and we miss out on image posts because finding a decent hosting service to link to is a pain in the ass, all the time.

on the other hand this isn't a place for memes and pics, it's a prose chatboard from the late 90s and maybe in-house image hosting isn't something that we really need - I mean, our best stuff is all prose flubs. I'd almost rather put our moderator calories towards bringing back unreg posters before incorporating image hosting.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 6 January 2018 21:51 (six years ago) link

Broken images are just part of ILX. Decay is life. It's building a temple just to watch it fall apart.

Like this thread, where watching the images die is an ongoing performance: Like Us On Facebook!

pplains, Saturday, 6 January 2018 21:55 (six years ago) link

if you restricted it to reg users (duh), certain file sizes, and put a checkbox "I swear this is my picture and not just a freeze frame from a disney movie that isn't out yet" then I can see it not being totally stupid

El Tomboto, Saturday, 6 January 2018 22:10 (six years ago) link

i'm with pplains here, i think. for posts / threads that are heavily reliant on images, i think people should just take a few extra seconds to use an imgur link if they want to make sure it'll survive the long haul.

Karl Malone, Saturday, 6 January 2018 22:33 (six years ago) link

ok ok prose prose

calstars, Saturday, 6 January 2018 22:35 (six years ago) link

understood

calstars, Saturday, 6 January 2018 22:41 (six years ago) link

I guess I have to start my own hosting service

calstars, Saturday, 6 January 2018 22:42 (six years ago) link

I'm not betting a penny on any website "surviving the long haul" tbh, not even imgur. Agree with pplains that it's just a fact of internet nature that things disappear.

Spengler said , I and guess , that prose is dead. Joke was on me here guess but Ilx loves images , how could you not?
