one thing that really amazed me was how DIY they were. they had built their own house. he was cutting his own records on a lathe. so badass.

A post by the Mississippi Records guy who's doing the book (I hope kickstarter won't force them to redo the whole process now the signed edition won't be signed anymore) + someone made a Dead Moon Family Tree mixtape on Pandora (in the comments) that's only for people in the USA :-/

RIP to the author of one of the most perfect songs ever, "Teenagers" by he and Toody's pre-Dead Moon band The Rats:

3rd & final Rats LP is finally out on Water Wing, looks fantastic!

https://www.waterwingrecords.com/shop/ww27mor1?

6 years of work went into remixing and remastering this version - with Fred Cole twisting knobs and obsessing over it's every detail and then Greg Shadoan and Tim Stollenwerk finishing the job. One of Fred Cole's greatest records and impossible to find for many years - at last this LP is available as it was meant to be heard. Play it loud....

First Pressing includes a 40 page booklet and a xerox replica of a Rats show poster!

Pulled out Thirteen Off My Hook, amazing to realize I bought it nearly 30 years ago! "I'm still a loner without many friends" (from "Kicked Out Kicked In") jumped out after reading that interview with Toody ("“In a weird way I don’t feel like I’m without him. We were both always loners -- we were just loners together. So now I’m a loner alone.”)
"War Baby" just started, never fails to set me off

was in line for a drink before the Mekons show in Seattle last July and they were playing "Poor Boy" before the show started, me and the guy ahead of me in line spontaneously went into the "pissed off, pissed off, pissed off, it's just the way I am" chorus together and high fived.

My gateway, when I was assigned this Columbus OH preview many years ago, still doing homework:

Pierced Arrows

Along with the other suspects forcibly re-named Lollipop Shoppe, Fred Cole conjured “You Must Be a Witch,” a ‘60s garage classic, and even a hit. Such music biz vindication didn’t impress guitarist Fred or his bassist wife Toody, who orbited indie rock’s Dead Moon for 20 years, before Pierced Arrows. Fred’s voice can pierce any sound system (or lack thereof). Both of the Coles project psychedelic soul over and through their fractured feedback, buzzing surveillance, Kelly Halliburton’s flying saucer cymbals, and the marching sway of melodies, always ready for more.

Saw Toody in a small bar last night (LaurelThirst Public House in Portland). Great show. She played with a trio + backup singer for a few songs.

Feels to reductive to say it felt like seeing Patti Smith in a hole in the wall, but that's what came to mind. Short clip here:

^^ Saw Hurley there a few months ago! New-ish to Portland, so it's exciting to see these legends still playing.

An incredibly intense live document of the band’s legendary 20-date first tour of New Zealand. Recorded before an audience of about 40 people in Invercargill (Keith Richards called it “the arsehole of the world”), this is Dead Moon at their most savage, their best live recording, the way they were meant to be heard!

Toody Cole recalled that the band had been invited to open for Nirvana that year, but one of Fred Cole’s ironfast rules was “never cancel a gig you committed to for a better one.” So Dead Moon burned through New Zealand as planned.

Recorded live at the Glengarry Tavern, Invercargill New Zealand Saturday September 5th 1992
