Can't say I have a lot of enthusiasm either way once serieses get to 5.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 14:59 (six years ago) link

Revenge of the Nerds 4 deserved to be on this list

frogbs, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:01 (six years ago) link

xpost You and everyone involved in making the fifth installment of a series.

Bernard Crunderdunder (Old Lunch), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:02 (six years ago) link

cool yeah imma get on this later today probs

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:03 (six years ago) link

I think we can avoid the painful poll by collectively agreeing that Seed of Chucky is clearly the best fifth movie in any series.

Bernard Crunderdunder (Old Lunch), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:04 (six years ago) link

FYI, that wiki list seems to be for series that tapped out at five installments. The visionaries which exceeded the bounds of sanity to create six or more films have been sadly excluded.

Bernard Crunderdunder (Old Lunch), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:06 (six years ago) link

Crystal skull is utter shit.

No film with the fridge scene is "utter shit."

Doc C, I haven't seen Phantom Menace since '98, cuz why would I?

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:07 (six years ago) link

I guess I figured you'd have at least made it out to its original theatrical run in '99 (sorry, couldn't resist).

Yeah, last time round I spent a lot of time in the thick of Wiki pages for 11-installment series and stuff. Think I'll just start from the 4ths and see what got a 5th, with a little skimming around for anything I might have missed.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:09 (six years ago) link

98/99, same thing :)

Tied with Final Destination 5.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:10 (six years ago) link

Fridge scene was great. The scene that, had it been excised from Crystal Skull, people *might* have gotten off its nuts a little bit more is Shia with the monkeys.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:12 (six years ago) link

And yeah the fridge scene and the stuff at Harvard is all solid. Lesser Spielberg but not unrecognizable and some nicely-staged action despite the distracting CGI. It really goes off a cliff hard right after the Harvard chase, though, and the opening stuff at the warehouse is really lacking a sense of magic or larger-than-lifeness.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:12 (six years ago) link

Spielberg had a number of "It's George's baby" quotes about that one

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:13 (six years ago) link

Shia was George's baby?!

That explains a few things.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:15 (six years ago) link

I just finished that recent Lucas biography and yeah, Spielberg quotes indicate that -- at least on that particular one -- when it comes to the Indy films he considers himself a for-hire director who executes George's vision, not a collaborator.

Monster fatberg (Phil D.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:17 (six years ago) link

I....enjoyed Fast Five. It's still the only FATF film I've seen

imago, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:17 (six years ago) link

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:22 (six years ago) link

THE utter shit

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:23 (six years ago) link

Jeez, how many 5 film series would you even consider watching?

For me... Frankenstein, Dracula, Winners/Gambler, Mr Vampire (first is very overrated but I could deal), Cremaster, Zatoichi, Lassie, Monty Python (this barely counts because I don't consider the live show a proper sequel), Police Story, Once Upon A Time In China, The Street Fighter, Lone Wolf And Cub, Romero's Dead series.

Maybe Gods Must Be Crazy, I gave up early on the first film but the later films are martial arts crossover.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:29 (six years ago) link

iirc the fifth Friday the 13th is bad but there are some worthwhile ones afterwards

Simon H., Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:30 (six years ago) link

The thread is coming!

it features the immortal outhouse death so i can't say it's bad exactly but it's one of the less good ones

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:34 (six years ago) link

the worthwhile friday installments after five are: ... pretty much just jason lives

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:35 (six years ago) link

is that the one that opens with the SWAT team fakeout? that one RULES

Simon H., Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:35 (six years ago) link

no that is jason goes to hell

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link

The 7th is pretty OK, but yeah, that's the last one that's any good.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link

which, i guess, simon, you are and i are the only two people on earth who think that movie rules xp

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link

imo jason lives is one of the coolest action movies ever made so i'm not knocking it

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:37 (six years ago) link

clearly I'm due a series rescreen

Simon H., Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:37 (six years ago) link

I'm in the obvious minority in thinking that Jason Goes to Hell is the best in the series by far. I mean, it's not good, but it's completely batshit and at least has the bravery to barely be a Friday the 13th movie.

Fresh Toast (Old Lunch), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:49 (six years ago) link

Can't agree with RAG about what constitutes a series

Mission Impossible 5 is good

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:50 (six years ago) link

best fourth film in a series, btw

imago, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:52 (six years ago) link

Oh, yes, MI5 was good. And probably Harry Potter 5, as well. They all blur into one movie in my memory, tbh.

Fresh Toast (Old Lunch), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:55 (six years ago) link

o yeah HP 5 was excellent

imago, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:56 (six years ago) link

Darraghmac- what you mean? I only disputed a Monty Python live film.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:57 (six years ago) link

we should start a club

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:59 (six years ago) link

XP maybe a discussion in itself, tbh!?

Frankenstein/Dracula, for instance.....are these coherent 'series' or are they lots of movies with recurring characters, kind of thing....is there a Sherlock Holmes 'series' or just Sherlock Holmes movies...jack the ripper, etc etc

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:10 (six years ago) link

They're sort of coherent. There's a universal series and a Hammer series each of Dracula and Frankenstein and they generally stick to a poorly plotted story.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:16 (six years ago) link

I'm pretty sure there are Sherlock and Tarzan films that work as a series.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:17 (six years ago) link

I want it asterisked if allowed

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:18 (six years ago) link

I'd imagine that maintaining some pretense of continuity from installment to installment is a relatively recent feature in the evolution of the film series, and even now only employed sparingly.

Fresh Toast (Old Lunch), Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:23 (six years ago) link

Forgot to mention the Whispering Corridors series. I liked one of those.

Let me know if any of you have watched all the Guinea Pig films. I'm sure you all love them and do a marathon every Christmas.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:32 (six years ago) link

Fast 5 is where the series really turns around, I understand.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:55 (six years ago) link

The secret was more fury.

Fresh Toast (Old Lunch), Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:57 (six years ago) link

18 Abashiri Prison films. 9 Super Giants films.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 9 November 2017 17:07 (six years ago) link

fast five is the best of the series

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 November 2017 17:08 (six years ago) link

Probably doesn't need pointing out that some of these 'bests' are similar to favoring the best piece of moldering detritus in one's compost heap.

Fresh Toast (Old Lunch), Thursday, 9 November 2017 17:18 (six years ago) link

Um, it's detrius.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 17:22 (six years ago) link

looking fwd to the Jason Goes to Hell auteur showing up in the Greatest Directors poll
