i lost some faith after a really bad run a few weeks back but the donna brazile one and the newest one have been straight fire, two of their best imo. the brazile book really benefits from a deep reading that plunges you into the rabbit hole of insanity and the new one is just nice and freewheeling with a really high joke hit rate.

yeah that was one of their best ever

That one was good. It's really this kind of thing where they're at their best, where they read/watch something that you would be kind of curious about but wouldn't actually think to read/watch and then do a deep dive on it in a way that no one else would. I can do without the sort of political funnies of the week stuff, just really not much need for another voice in that area. They're not amazing as pure comics.

If I had a penny for every time this happens on a podcast (and most examples aren't live, either).

Though to be fair video podcasts are an even worse situation.

Is the Saudi episode good? I started it and maybe just wasn't in the right mood for it, but it just kind of felt like when you're in a group social gathering and two people decide to have a long side conversation about something only they understand.

i think it depends on how deep your knowledge of saudi is already - mine is puddle-deep and tbh i was lost most of the time altho i thought it was really interesting

Clearly we need to start a separate "Vexing Vixens of the Dirtbag Left" thread.

It's an idiosyncrasy possibly, but I really like podcast vibes where the hosts seem to genuinely enjoy each other's company. And my two greatest pleasure from this show is when one of Felix's dumb obscure jokes makes Matt snicker and the sound of Amber's laugh. Reminds me of what I enjoyed about the Howard/Robin relationship when I first heard Stern.

i see this rhetorical construction on the internet all the time in the wake of weinstein et al (“what we’re not ALLOWED to do (x) anymore!?”) and it’s a terrible look. no this is not the time nor the place to express one’s crush on the one woman who is a part of this podcast

Matt, Will, and Amber in the latest ep are a pleasant combo—less funny, but easier to listen to, like an Adult Contemp take on CTH.

Also, for the first time, the show's "smart kid piping up at the dinner table" aesthetic is explicitly acknowledged. I wonder if they're trying to move past that.

I've been liking Champagne Sharks a lot more than Chapo--they seem better able to talk about what's going on in the culture now

This show has always felt too zeitgeisty (in it's own little way) to really endure for very long. Not sure I can really imagine them getting any more popular than they already are.
