Saudi episode is up, I'm still confused

it me, Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:39 (six years ago) link

oooh, a Donna Brazile episode! sick. nice Rand Paul cold open

flappy bird, Friday, 10 November 2017 02:10 (six years ago) link

i lost some faith after a really bad run a few weeks back but the donna brazile one and the newest one have been straight fire, two of their best imo. the brazile book really benefits from a deep reading that plunges you into the rabbit hole of insanity and the new one is just nice and freewheeling with a really high joke hit rate.

oiocha, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 01:30 (six years ago) link

yeah that was one of their best ever

Simon H., Tuesday, 14 November 2017 02:03 (six years ago) link

matt has been so annoying ever since he moved to nyc. just generally louder, dumber, more reductive, almost self parody. i like the new live show though, but fuck man, you don't need to scream everything

flappy bird, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 18:25 (six years ago) link

SHUT UP! SHUT UP!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 18:32 (six years ago) link

the first half of that live show was rough going, but the anti-union video curation was inspired

Simon H., Tuesday, 21 November 2017 18:34 (six years ago) link

lol exactly

"LIL PEEP??? WHAT IS THAT??? WHAT IS THAT??? WHAT IS A LIL PEEP???"

^verging again on LOL BACON

That one was good. It's really this kind of thing where they're at their best, where they read/watch something that you would be kind of curious about but wouldn't actually think to read/watch and then do a deep dive on it in a way that no one else would. I can do without the sort of political funnies of the week stuff, just really not much need for another voice in that area. They're not amazing as pure comics.

Agreed.

Google Murray Blockchain (kingfish), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 20:25 (six years ago) link

Pundit/Politico MST3K basically, an influence they'd obviously acknowledge.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 21:51 (six years ago) link

is the recent live show any good? as they kind of suck usually and i don't want to waste my damn time on substandard content!

-_- (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 21:52 (six years ago) link

The first half is garbage, the second half (employer videos) has moments, but since you can't see the videos a lot of it is lost.

louise ck (milo z), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 21:57 (six years ago) link

ok i think i shall skip, thanks

-_- (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 21:59 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I’m waiting for somebody to sync up the ep audio to the vid and upload it all to YT

I have a serious crush on Amber

een, Wednesday, 22 November 2017 00:42 (six years ago) link

gotta love that they specifically joke about the video humor only working live and then release it as a podcast anyway.

If I had a penny for every time this happens on a podcast (and most examples aren't live, either).

Though to be fair video podcasts are an even worse situation.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 22 November 2017 14:58 (six years ago) link

Is the Saudi episode good? I started it and maybe just wasn't in the right mood for it, but it just kind of felt like when you're in a group social gathering and two people decide to have a long side conversation about something only they understand.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Wednesday, 22 November 2017 15:10 (six years ago) link

i think it depends on how deep your knowledge of saudi is already - mine is puddle-deep and tbh i was lost most of the time altho i thought it was really interesting

it’s always jarring to me when felix’s dumb-as-a-rock facade drops and he reveals he actually knows stuff

Clearly we need to start a separate "Vexing Vixens of the Dirtbag Left" thread.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Wednesday, 22 November 2017 16:41 (six years ago) link

It's an idiosyncrasy possibly, but I really like podcast vibes where the hosts seem to genuinely enjoy each other's company. And my two greatest pleasure from this show is when one of Felix's dumb obscure jokes makes Matt snicker and the sound of Amber's laugh. Reminds me of what I enjoyed about the Howard/Robin relationship when I first heard Stern.

i see this rhetorical construction on the internet all the time in the wake of weinstein et al (“what we’re not ALLOWED to do (x) anymore!?”) and it’s a terrible look. no this is not the time nor the place to express one’s crush on the one woman who is a part of this podcast

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 22 November 2017 17:52 (six years ago) link

...anyway I'm glad she's been on more regularly of late

Simon H., Wednesday, 22 November 2017 18:14 (six years ago) link

I'm curious what her music sounds like.

matt talks over amber all the time it drives me fucking nuts

though perhaps he just talks over everyone all the time and i just notice it more in that case

I think this is the Target anti-union vid they mock:

why are you cringing?

XxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxXxxxx (dylannn), Monday, 27 November 2017 08:01 (six years ago) link

Matt, Will, and Amber in the latest ep are a pleasant combo—less funny, but easier to listen to, like an Adult Contemp take on CTH.

Also, for the first time, the show's "smart kid piping up at the dinner table" aesthetic is explicitly acknowledged. I wonder if they're trying to move past that.

it me, Monday, 27 November 2017 19:34 (six years ago) link

oh nice that's a refreshing lineup, haven't listened yet, will tonite

flappy bird, Monday, 27 November 2017 19:41 (six years ago) link

omg one woman in the KMART video is wearing a Too $hort Short Dogg's in the House shirt

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 17:35 (six years ago) link

I'm losing steam on them right now but I guess that's inevitable considering how hard I binged for over a year.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 17:41 (six years ago) link

Yeah, that can happen. That’s part of the podcast binge fan arc, isn’t it.

Google Murray Blockchain (kingfish), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 18:13 (six years ago) link

yeah I'm in the same boat tbh. i listen to the episodes where the description sounds interesting basically

-_- (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 18:14 (six years ago) link

AdomianGorka pops up in today’s ep, for those interested

Google Murray Blockchain (kingfish), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 18:16 (six years ago) link

yeah i'm burnt out on it too. behind a few episodes. i feel like from now on i'll pay attention & listen when news is cracking, on slow weeks i've found myself skipping episodes.

just got their first newsletter though, it was funny lol

I've been liking Champagne Sharks a lot more than Chapo--they seem better able to talk about what's going on in the culture now

President Keyes, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 18:38 (six years ago) link

This show has always felt too zeitgeisty (in it's own little way) to really endure for very long. Not sure I can really imagine them getting any more popular than they already are.

ryan, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 18:40 (six years ago) link

I do like what i've heard of champagne sharks
