I was actually thinking earlier today that this album's been kinda forgotten about, but looking at the track list wow there are some great songs on this thing.

Either White Noise or Help Me Lose My Mind

"Latch" remains the most startling Sam Smith moment.

Without listening to this again first, I'm inclined to say "Defeated No More", but alt. choices would be:

1. "F For You" if it was the version featuring Mary J Blige
2. "Confess To Me" if it was the Hannah Wants & Chris Lorenzo Remix
3. "Control" if they'd included it on the album

Oh wow we haven't done this one yet. "Help Me Lose My Mind" soooo goood but I might have to be boring and go "Latch".

When a Fire Starts to Burn is great, but there are many good songs on this

Will I be ilx-pilloried for suggesting that Caracal is also a good album, if not as good

I think you're more likely to be met with a wall of indifference, a bit like the album really.

I can't imagine wanting to play Settle back to back nowadays, and always skipped Latch in any sense, but this is one of those albums that just dropped at the perfect moment, there was so much happening in the summer of 2013 and I suspect if you were 18 at the time then it was very likely to be THE album.

Anyway, 'You And Me' is the one I go back to most often, probably no coincidence that's also the most 2-step moment here.

Fantastic album, and an even more fantastic collection of singles, among which "Voices" is the only one that I think of as being anything less than awesome.

Voted "F for You."

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:17 (six years ago) link

it would easily be "F for you" if it was the version w/ mary j. blige

joshywinty (josh), Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:22 (six years ago) link

The answer is White Noise probably but I voted for the underappreciated January because I doubt anyone else will

Caracal definitely has some amazing stuff on.

piscesx, Thursday, 9 November 2017 23:07 (six years ago) link

When I spun this album this morning, "Grab Her!" sounded like the album's great deep cut, to me.

in the end i had to go for ""White Noise."

Is this already dated? Anyways going to vote for "F for You."

Blue Room, Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:26 (six years ago) link

I suspect if you were 18 at the time then it was very likely to be THE album.

I was 16 at the time and it really was! Along with the Daft Punk album and Chris Malinchak's So Good To Me it really did seem like the stylistic features of commerical dance music were shifting (generally). I remember David Guetta's Play Hard being promoted at the same time and thinking that it sounded like the past.

Anyway, the singles were so much better than the album tracks even at the time, I think only Confess To Me really stands up from what I heard first on the album. I'm voting for You And Me as I had a huge soft spot for it back then and even away from the context of the hedonistic summer it came out I still do to an extent in the sense that when I play it, it seems to reveal more of itself on every listen, a proper slow-burner.

The Mary J Blige version of F For You was wonderful as well

Custard Cream, Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:45 (six years ago) link

Voices and You & Me are both really good, but going with White Noise. The album sucks overall, however.

Boiling better than either of those three.

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 12 November 2017 04:38 (six years ago) link

I'll vote "F for You," even w/o Mary J. I kind of like the dude singing. It is way better w/ her, but still good regardless.

Voices is better than a lot of the songs that got votes and here's the Wookie funky remix (sounds funky to me anyway).
