I'll go ahead and just say the top 100 listed on TSPDT are all "nominated" and we can move on from there.

the intentional phallusy (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 8 November 2017 22:42 (six years ago) link

What about creators who mostly worked together? E.g. do we vote for "Michael Powell" and "Emeric Pressburger" or is there an option to vote for "Powell & Pressburger"? I'm actually mainly asking this because I want to vote for Jane Arden but she mostly only worked in conjunction with Jack Bond so I'm not sure whether to just nominate her or to nominate "Arden & Bond".

emil.y, Wednesday, 8 November 2017 22:43 (six years ago) link

nearly nominated Jane Arden just now, i guess we've the option to vote for both/either

how many votes do we get? cuz even if it's 50, plenty i love will not be on it.

I don't think more than 50 is a good idea if we're trying to pick la creme (also some voters would struggle to name 50 non-Marvel directors).

So you're saying you want other people's slots for your ballot.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:50 (six years ago) link

no.

my point was more "stop nominating people even you are not going to vote for"

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:53 (six years ago) link

I mean harlan county is a p singular film, really shocking the first time you see it.

Bush Mama is easily one of my favourite films of all time, even if the couple of others I've seen by him come nowhere close

plax (ico), Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:54 (six years ago) link

I saw Bush Mama on my birthday this year.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 17 November 2017 21:46 (six years ago) link

Oh, I think more than 50 slots would be a fucking awful idea. I'd be more into like 25 or so? But as I tend to say on every nomination thread, I like nominations to be comprehensive so that I have a list I can refer to and go "oh yeah, forgot about that one!" Basically, my memory sucks and I need help.

I am pretty worried that this list is just going to be a crappy retread of other best director lists, and I'm also already having high anxiety about voting for Polanski, which I am definitely going to do but I feel 100% shitty about. To be fair to him I'll probably vote for other shitbags who happen to be less notorious too.

emil.y, Saturday, 18 November 2017 02:34 (six years ago) link

Polanski is likely to be in my top 10. Just a fact.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Saturday, 18 November 2017 14:04 (six years ago) link

I'll vote for Polanski only if he happens to die by the time I get around to sending my ballot.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 18 November 2017 14:49 (six years ago) link

I won't think for a second about what kind of person I'm voting for. I don't know if Polanski (who may or may not be on my list--the old peak value vs. career value question) would be the only one where that's even an issue; most of the people I won't know anything anyway, and I hadn't planned on a James Toback vote. I could see grappling with that if it involved flying someone in to receive a state honour, like the Legion of France, but not with a message-board poll.
