The crazy syncopated hi-hat in the Time's "777-9311," is that Prince "playing" the drum machine pads manually? You couldn't program something that complex back then, could you?

Oh snap, posted March 2014:

The Time-777-9311 Was A Stock Drum Beat In Prince's Linn LM-1 ($5,500 drum machine you know it wasn't The Time's)
The beat was programed into the Linn LM1 by David Garibaldi from for Roger Linn. The phone number was Dez's home number and he was very pissed at us all.

Oh snap again, from the comments to the video below:

Actually I asked Jellybean recently....He came to a show I play In in Vegas... He said Dave Garibaldi programmed the Drum Machine and Prince layed down the hi hat part... Believe it or not... He did laugh and tell me he's been playing it live for the last 25 years... Blew me away....

Oh shit. That rings a bells (maybe I heard that once and forgot it), but also shatters some dreams. I feel like I've also heard people say Prince played it in (could you even play the buttons on a Linn in real time, or just sequence?).

xp

Oh ok, so both are true! The hi-hat is the real genius part anyway. I still wonder if it was played or programmed.

is there any drumming of Morris' on the first couple of Time albums?

just everything...i mean obv the performances are crazy good but the weird "story" staging...the weird red haired sax guy who wears a druid robe for part of it? lite jazz charlie parker cover? it's got everything

seriously though Cat Glover...I wonder how many calories she burned a night? her energy level through the whole show insane (Prince and Sheila being not far behind)

Yeah I got it, just started reading it yesterday. First chapter is a great and elaborate interview with engineer/studio owner Chris Moon, describing meeting a teenage Prince (in the context of the band Champagne recording in his studio), getting in touch with him and subsequently working/developing/teaching in the form of a collaborative project, if you will, to develop him as an artist. Can't wait to read the rest. Great photos, too.

Yeah, I read the Duane Tudahl book a couple of months ago. It's astonishing that in that single year of work he basically wrote and recorded all of Purple Rain, Ice Cream Castle, Apollonia 6, Around the World in a Day and dozens of B-sides and other material. Plus filmed the movie. And toured. An absolutely mind-blowing level of being prolific.

**NEW STUFF**

http://variety.com/2018/music/news/prince-album-of-previously-unreleased-material-coming-in-september-exclusive-1202783507/

"Michael Howe, who’s been working with us on the archive, has done a tremendous job of finding some special pieces of work, and one of the pieces that he found, all of us fell in love with it and decided this was special enough for fans to hear. So we’re putting the final touches on it — it’ll come in the fall..
Just two weeks ago we were doing a tape transfer and in one of the two-inch boxes we found the original lyrics to “Kiss”! It’s amazing, the things that are starting to surface. "

A thought I find myself returning to every time I hear the song: I'm not sure anyone else in the world could pull off the OTT shrieking at the end of 'The Beautiful Ones' and make it sound urgent and cool rather than off-putting and concerning. I try to remember this any time I start thinking what an amazing karaoke song it would be.
