altho I guess their first singles didn't come out til '69? oh well

"Music For My Mother" was recorded in '68 though.

yeah they were definitely active. I feel like there was a genuine dark/spooky strain of funk right from the get-go, the genre just didn't really get going til '69 is all.

various Norman Whitfield productions, Curtis Mayfield, Eugene McDaniels. James Brown never really went there (altho I think you could argue the Grodeck Whipperjenny did)

The spookiness/darkness/tripped out-ness of a lot of Funkadelic's stuff 1969-1971 is a huge part of the appeal for me, without a doubt.
