fresh basil and fresh mozzarella are toppings

This thread really couldn't be any more ILX.

Margherita is great but it's different from cheese pizza.

if only we could find a way to tilt it towards whether you should tip the people who make and/or deliver yr pizza too

I rarely go for a margherita myself because it's just not enough food for a growing boy like me, and it gets cold quickly (I am not a cold pizza guy), but it can be completely fantastic when I'm not that hungry and when basic is exactly what I'm after

as for using a margherita as a yardstick by which to judge a pizzeria's fundamentals, I guess so, but this seems more theoretical than practical, if I want to check out a new band I go with the album that has the song I like, not the album with the most stripped-down arrangement & production

Maturity is discovering that the fundamental pizza is margherita and not pepperoni.

Eazy, Monday, 6 November 2017 16:44 (six years ago) link

I would happily eat a margherita but would never order one. Likewise, would never order pasta with just marinara. It's a good start to a good dish but pretty boring as a finished product.

xp 100% agree w/Tom

"I've eaten 100 pizzas from this place but I couldn't tell you if the place is any good since none of those was a margherita"

Some context (some other context is that Tracer is insane)

http://slice.seriouseats.com/2014/04/2014-04-21-mpm.html

Having heard ledge's explanation I'd consider voting 'yes' twice: it's definitely the pizza that's the safest to make because absolutely everyone will be willing to polish it off after a few pints.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 6 November 2017 16:47 (six years ago) link

if you're going thru the trouble of making a pizza, why not throw actual toppings on to increase the nutritional value

If you're going to the trouble of making a pizza, why ruin it with nutritional toppings that would be better off eaten as a side dish? Put those vegetables in a salad or something.

Margherita the same as a cheese pizza? Supposed to have tomato chunks on it? This discussion should be closed to people not based in New York or Italy.

Give the options ledge posted, I would definitely order a margherita. Maybe pepperoni if I was having an unusual craving.

rocket, pineapple and oreos or gtfo

I agree. Toppings should add to the deliciousness of the pizza, not "ruin it". I have a feeling we'd disagree as to what constitutes a pizza being ruined, tho.

you should always dump every foodstuff in the household onto a pizza to maximize nutritional value

I don't know if I've ever seen a legitimate margherita available by the slice. It's generally the very difference cheese pizza that's available by the slice. I suspect a margherita slice wouldn't take as well to reheating; margherita pies also don't hold together as well as a cheese pie which I imagine would make it more difficult to sell by the slice.

anyway on a serious note strikes me that ordering a margherita is akin to ordering a cucumber roll at a top sushi place - trying to get a feel for how they do the rice, assembly, etc. before moving on to the more serious stuff.

as always with food threads, particularly pizza ones, posts by people outside the US should probably be a different color, be marked somehow, or ideally be subject to moderation before being posted and likely deleted
