i.e. that is a cheese pizza with some kind of shrubbery added, presumably for christmas

feel like if you're going thru the trouble of making a pizza, why not throw actual toppings on to increase the nutritional value. veggie pizza for me has, like, veggies on it.

pizza should not have too many toppings on it

that is all

1 margherita pizza is not "cheese pizza"
2 basil is an essential part of margherita pizza
3 margherita is one of the best pizzas, perhaps the most classic pizza, its simplicity is enhanced by ordering in addition another pizza that is perhaps more complex and intense in its ingredients, but the margherita pizza should always be consumed first
4 the best pizza is not available at a place that doesn't have a good margherita pizza

marcos, Monday, 6 November 2017 16:13 (six years ago) link

I think of "cheese" pizza as being more or less covered with cheese, barring the edge. Margherita has globs of fresh mozzarella that leave a lot of the fresh/chunk tomato sauce exposed.

here's what I would pick off that menu, for a party

Margherita -- see thread

Pepperoni -- meat requirement

Blue cheese, rocket and Balsamic Glaze -- balsamic's too sweet usually but people love this

Port salut and Peppardew peppers -- this sounds amazing to me so idgaf if I'm the only one who eats it

considering that you can judge the quality of a pizzeria on their pizza margherita, ordering them is essential.

I rarely go for a margherita myself because it's just not enough food for a growing boy like me, and it gets cold quickly (I am not a cold pizza guy), but it can be completely fantastic when I'm not that hungry and when basic is exactly what I'm after

as for using a margherita as a yardstick by which to judge a pizzeria's fundamentals, I guess so, but this seems more theoretical than practical, if I want to check out a new band I go with the album that has the song I like, not the album with the most stripped-down arrangement & production

El Tomboto, Monday, 6 November 2017 16:42 (six years ago) link

Maturity is discovering that the fundamental pizza is margherita and not pepperoni.

Eazy, Monday, 6 November 2017 16:44 (six years ago) link

I would happily eat a margherita but would never order one. Likewise, would never order pasta with just marinara. It's a good start to a good dish but pretty boring as a finished product.

xp 100% agree w/Tom

http://slice.seriouseats.com/2014/04/2014-04-21-mpm.html

Having heard ledge's explanation I'd consider voting 'yes' twice: it's definitely the pizza that's the safest to make because absolutely everyone will be willing to polish it off after a few pints.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 6 November 2017 16:47 (six years ago) link

if you're going thru the trouble of making a pizza, why not throw actual toppings on to increase the nutritional value

If you're going to the trouble of making a pizza, why ruin it with nutritional toppings that would be better off eaten as a side dish? Put those vegetables in a salad or something.

Margherita the same as a cheese pizza? Supposed to have tomato chunks on it? This discussion should be closed to people not based in New York or Italy.

Give the options ledge posted, I would definitely order a margherita. Maybe pepperoni if I was having an unusual craving.

rocket, pineapple and oreos or gtfo

I agree. Toppings should add to the deliciousness of the pizza, not "ruin it". I have a feeling we'd disagree as to what constitutes a pizza being ruined, tho.

I don't know if I've ever seen a legitimate margherita available by the slice. It's generally the very difference cheese pizza that's available by the slice. I suspect a margherita slice wouldn't take as well to reheating; margherita pies also don't hold together as well as a cheese pie which I imagine would make it more difficult to sell by the slice.
