I would eat an Oreo cake.

The song in the video is appalling though and ruins the cake.

I made an Oreo cake for a friend's bday a fortnight ago. I used the choc cake recipe from here, split it into 4 layers, then filled/covered it with whipped cream icing containing crushed orero, then decorated with oreos. It was enormous and delicious. The problem is not Oreo cakes, it is bad cakes. Oreos themselves are glorified chocolate bourbons, what's not to like?

oreos are good for compulsive snacking but they're kind of chemically and gross and I think they've even fiddled with/cheapened the formula in recent years. not that I bake much these days, but i imagine the flavor of the final cake would be improved by using a higher grade dark chocolate wafer (or making some from scratch) and some homemade icing. obviously that's just if you need the crunch and crumble factor - otherwise just making a dark chocolate layer cake with a nice frosting would probably satisfy anybody to whom it was offered, just without the billing of "oreo cake."

Doctor Casino, Monday, 6 November 2017 14:01 (six years ago) link

but c'mon calling them glorified bonbons is totally backwards

We buy them every once in a while for my kids. One thing I noticed when I tried them for the first time as an adult is that there is a somewhat burnt taste to them.

i wouldn't be surprised if they were invented as a way of using byproduct from some other process(es)

Joe-Joe's are the way to go; they actually taste like chocolate and vanilla

oreos look a lot more appealing than they taste, i think that's the clincher

Oreos are vegan so they are inherently good.

billstevejim, Monday, 6 November 2017 18:37 (six years ago) link

The original video that inspired this discussion is horrible and infantilizing and deserves any amount of scorn heaped upon it, regardless of the merits or demerits of oreo cakes.

there are soooo many of those b&w challenges on my timeline, and each of them is on a different day of the challenge. Very disconcerting when a new Day 1 shows up.

Do all three at once for a bonus level i guess?

Contrary to what your mid-20s, intoxicated, star-fucking, smeary-eyelinered self might think, the warm, worn body you have now is beautiful. It has housed and fed two humans who like to lie on your lap and legs like furniture.

that second sentence feels like there's some copy editing that could've happened there. both really.

I don't even know what to make of this veteran-related post:

Near as I can make out, it is playing on the idea that vets make 'normal girls' freeze up with fear, because all vets are screwed up head cases who are likely to scream with night terrors or start punching holes in sheetrock walls. ha-ha.

vets are supposed to see this and think "it's funny because it's true."

A is for (Aimless), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 18:26 (six years ago) link

i was thinking maybe it's trying to play on the vet's fears about isolation. that they finally open up to someone about what happened and the other person kind of gives an empty supportive response but doesn't really understand, maybe it's impossible for them to understand, etc

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 18:55 (six years ago) link

of course, it would be kind of weird for the vet to be opening about these things while also hitting on someone, so it is kind of weird

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 18:56 (six years ago) link

it's weird ok

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 18:56 (six years ago) link

I think it said 'hitting on', not 'opening up to'.

A is for (Aimless), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 18:58 (six years ago) link

I think the main thing is vets aren't like the other girls

One of those good old-fashioned back-breaking jobs that made men old before age 50, that we all miss terribly because we never had to do it ourselves.
