MoMA is showing a DCP, so I assume so!

It's funny, it's part of this series:

https://www.moma.org/calendar/film/3890?locale=en

and I'm sure Club 57 showed mostly 16mm prints, while here it's almost all 35mm or digital. I saw The 10th Victim today.

On the 18th you can see Manos and Blade Runner 2049 at MoMA! Largest budget gap of all time.

Hmmmmm looking at my calendar for the 16th, I just might have to skip it for All About Eve at Village East or Once Upon A Time In The West at FF, both already on my calendar. And a barroom screening of Whale Rider at Videology to wash it down.... an embarrassment of riches!

Manos is on the 18th, not the 16th. (also tomorrow)

I consider it scandalous that FF is showing Once Upon A Time In The West digitally... it p much needs to be seen on a big screen every time, but in 35. You might be OK with a Bluray if those days are gone. :(

something about this just seems like cultural revisionism, a multi-level (insular) repurposing of "low culture" as "high culture". why is manos important? because it was shown at an underground new york city club by three people sometime in the early 1980s, and those three people went on to become Famous Artists! come on, nothing against keith haring, but who's watching this movie on the grounds that keith haring may once have seen it?

It seems kind of pointless to watch this film without Joel & The 'Bots.

i guess i'm kinda curious how it plays without them. it's a sick and ugly movie that they make watchable in a different way than a lot of their usual dross, because it's so dead and empty. feels like it might be kind of an interesting viewing experience in a darkened theater, idk.

thanks for the correction, morbz. i need new glasses!

I’ve got the Blu-ray restoration — per a question above, it is restored from the original negative, but it was a Super-8 or something similarly basic to start with — and without Joel etc it’s a definitely bizarre watch. The lacunae and utter lack of sense in terms of how to edit for pace become weirdly compelling.

added to the MoMA equation is that a *large* minority of every film audience there is octogenarians who have no idea what they're about to see.

oscar voters, then?

probably a few... the stories i have...

rushomancy, I could've gone to Club 57 (didn't), but a friend (who is still here 35 years later) fondly remembers seeing Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster there. So some people knew it partly for the movies they showed, it seems.

how many drive-ins did it play in the '60s?

Scattered ones in Texas by all accounts.

two years pass...

Finally saw this tonight. John Stossel was an inspired choice for the antagonist.

Well, that's a fine howdy adieu! (Old Lunch), Saturday, 20 June 2020 03:07 (three years ago) link
