In general, my impression of 90s music is bad, but upon further examination (which I got to do this year assisting Fluxblog with the 90s survey mixes) the cancer didn't really set in until 1996/97.

There's plenty to love in the early 90s, 1990 in particular!

It's no 1989, but pretty solid, given: Bossanova, People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, Goo, Behaviour, Fear of a Black Planet, World Clique, Songs for Drella, Chill Out, All Shook Down.Plus "Soon" (Glider EP), "Dub Be Good To Me", "Getting Away With It", "Step On", "Loaded", "The Power", "La Raza", "Mama Said Knock You Out", "Ride On Time", "Doin' The Do", "Hippychick", "Poison"...

Stuff I was listening to at the time was James, Ride, The House of Love. Plus 1990 saw the release of one of my top-3 albums of the decade, although I didn't hear it until a full year or so later: The Trouble Tree by Freedy Johnston. Bit of an anomaly (in terms of my listening habits as well as in the artist's discography). Weird, twisted tales from a singer-songwriter who at the time must have been listening to equal amounts Gram Parsons, Pixies, Randy Newman and The Fall.

Coincidentally, I've been listening to Heaven or Las Vegas this afternoon, so that too.

my 1990 section looks kind of thin. most of it is the dean benedetti recordings of charlie parker. there was a good bastro record. doc corbin dart's "patricia". some decent metal - a good tape by dreadnot, records by nocturnus and obliveon that are pretty good. robyn hitchcock's "eye". ant-bee's "pure electric honey". good albums by vexed and uncle wiggly.

Well, hardly anyone seems to bring up 1990 as some sort of gold standard year for music, hence the thread, which isn't designed to criticise the year, but to discuss the music that came out that year.

Great attempt to try and derail the thread by trying to provide me with something to negatively react to, though.

There definitely seems to have been better singles than individual albums in 1990.

Yeah, this is the kind of stance that I'm leaning towards, although I really like Odysseus' list.

'Nothing Compares 2 U' remains a great single, but how often do folks listen to the album these days? Does anyone here still really listen to World Party in 2017?

1990 / Time For The Souffle

1990 was the year I discovered pop music. I was only 9 years old but receiving a radio and listening to it almost constantly opened up a world back from which I'd never come back. Lots of (in retrospect) bad dance-pop music, but I loved it. I wasn't old enough for albums, other than the two Now comps that came out that year. My big hits of that year:
Dub Be Good To Me, The Power, U Can't Touch This, Ghetto Heaven, Tricky Disco, LFO (loads of great ravey stuff), Birdhouse In Your Soul. I especially liked the rave stuff because it sounded nothing like my parents' music.

1990 definitely has its very own aesthetic that seems quite apart from 89 and 91. You had those sort of festival-goth people with velvet stovepipe hats and tinted Lennon specs; and the music videos were either shot in a city in black and white or in a studio with the most lurid, frenzied superimposed backdrops ever seen. that reminds me, i think that both the best Fields of The Nephilim album and maybe the worst Sisters of Mercy album were from 1990

The only 1990 album in my entire iTunes library is Neil Young's Ragged Glory. I guess there has to be a couple more that I'm forgetting.

Seriously, genuinely not aware of any particular consensus otherwise (other than maybe based on some pathetic idea that Nevermind was more important than anything from the previous eighteen months) but the question is more why pay attention to that nonsense rather than where is it even coming from.

1990 was a transition year for me - in the fall I moved to Boston and finally had access to 'alternative' radio stations like WFNX, WBCN and all the great college stations. Not to mention all the record stores a quick T ride away. It really opened up my musical world. Shoegaze was big for me - Lush, Ride, Pale Saints, etc. And the whole Flying Nun stable was off the charts great - The Chills, Straitjacket Fits, Able Tasmans, etc all released great albums in 1990. Looking at the Rate Your Music lists, I'd guess a retroactive top ten / most listened to in 1990 would be:

It's pretty easy to come up with a handful of great albums for any particular year. I think the original question asks if it was memorable, impactful or otherwise felt like music was consistently engaging. And to all of those it's clearly 'yes' for me.

so any judging of a year as good or better is just some amalgamation of received wisdom/press narratives, your own life circumstances and age at that time, etc

Musically, 1990 in many ways feels more like the very tail end of the '80s to me than the beginning of the '90s.

Eno/Cale - Wrong Way Up came out in 1990, and a perfect amalgam of their talents it is.

Wrong Way Up is great. It didn't make a broad impact at the time but it remains in my collection, unlike so many of the other titles listed ITT.

I recall the New Zealand music scene starting to gain wider notice in North America in 1990. Maybe not as influential as the Pacific Northwest was about to become but definitely longer lasting for me. SPIN did a story around that time and a friend brought me back a copy of the Tuatara comp that she picked up while on a trip to NZ that summer. There are several significant NZ releases from 1990 already noted but I'd also suggest the Plagal Grind EP and TKOP's A Beard of Bees, which is still an absolutely magical listen.

My mistake, Beard of Bees was actually 1984 release. It was the Xpressway cassette that dropped in 1990. Fantastic album, even if it doesn't strengthen this particular argument.

The best of the lot has been the Bernadette 'Klymaxx' Cooper album, a sharp and fun Prince-not-Prince jam in the same league as another long-standing 1990 favorite, A'me Lorain's Starring in...Standing in a Monkey Sea. The Branigan album was surprisingly solid if a bit sonically anachronistic. The Deee-Lite album was, aside from the obvious outlier, kind of a disappointing snooze tbh. Oleta is good value but I guess not much of a pop album per se. The rest...eh.

I guess I'm continuing with this experiment for the time being, to the extent that anyone cares.

Wow -- I was listening to Circle of One again yesterday! I enjoy Adams' voice and piano playing and her modest little tunes. I'll admit, though, that I listened again because at a friend's service two weeks ago one of his other buddies played Adams' cover of "Everything Must Change," which devastated me.

I love World Clique, full stop. I regard it as a collection of exemplary house pop.

We might've been listening to Circle of One at the same time! I'm definitely going to listen to more Oleta Adams now, for sure. I've always really liked her cover of 'Get Here' and was pleasantly surprised by her stylistic breadth and, yeah, her voice.

Rather generous of Roland Orzabal to produce it without turning it into TFF.

From a purely anecdotal standpoint, listening to albums from this particular year feels incredibly schizophrenic to me inasmuch as, between the summer of '90 and the fall of '91 (when singles from some of these albums were still charting), I lived in four different cities (we moved at the end of my seventh grade year, then again in the middle of eighth grade, and then again just before my freshman year). So I have an array of geographical associations with these songs, and then also the thing where a song hits big in one part of the country long before another catches up, etc. The fact that 'U Can't Touch This' and 'Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Move)' were released in the same year seems to strain all temporal credulity.
