This and the Charlie Worsham album are my favorite country albums of the year, which means they're among the best of the year.

I just love how every song takes its time.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:56 (six years ago) link

I've only listened once, but each song had something that grabbed my attention

Worsham is Liddell, too, right? Just like lots of Miranda Lambert?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:58 (six years ago) link

god this record sounds so good

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 4 November 2017 20:35 (six years ago) link

that choir that comes out of nowhere in "hollywood"

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 4 November 2017 20:41 (six years ago) link

is this my album of the year

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 4 November 2017 20:49 (six years ago) link

Might be mine, but I'd lose four songs.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 4 November 2017 20:54 (six years ago) link

which four though

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 4 November 2017 20:59 (six years ago) link

"Long Black Veil" is OK but she has spent the last eight years making the gesture redundant. I'd confine "Shine on Rainy Day," "Someone Else's Heartache," and "Take the Devil Out of Me" to b-sides.

I like Lee Ann Womack but "I Hope You Dance" would be on my worst songs list

cut cut (crüt), Sunday, 5 November 2017 14:01 (six years ago) link

at least three of those songs are my faves on the record alfred

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Sunday, 5 November 2017 14:05 (six years ago) link

You're welcome!

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 5 November 2017 14:15 (six years ago) link

i hope you dance

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Sunday, 5 November 2017 14:21 (six years ago) link

i could look this up but is the Shine On Rainy Day the Brent Cobb song?

alpine static, Sunday, 5 November 2017 15:28 (six years ago) link

it's one of them, he also did "bottom of the barrel"

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Sunday, 5 November 2017 15:30 (six years ago) link

"Hollywood" is such a good song

"Talking Behind Your Back" is a beauty. Dean Dillon co-write!

three weeks pass...

Love the breezy nashville skyline vibe of "talking behind your back"

I think it’s her best- the first side in particular is flawless.

country funk of "He Called Me Baby" is so great

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:44 (four years ago) link

what do you think?

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:45 (four years ago) link

well I'm only halfway through a first listen but so far so good!

the George Jones cover is a charmingly odd choice to end it with (I admit I skipped ahead to listen to that first)

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:53 (four years ago) link

this has some of those "hot shit electric guitarist showoff" moments that I always find interesting on modern country albums. the playing is much looser and rawer than the showboating country-rock guitar solos of previous eras.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 17:07 (four years ago) link

not that the band is really the focus here - good country session musos know to always serve the song/performer - it's just interesting what they do with the moments where they step forward

this Long Black Veil cover is... different

The coda on Hollywood is verrrrry Candy Says

"He Called Me Baby" has such cool guitar playing going on. I love that raw (for the 21st century) band in a room sound. These guys are hot stuff:

eight months pass...

fuck is There's More Where That Came From a lovely album.

― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn),

me today. the harmonies on the chorus to "The Last Time" are the most gorgeous thing ever. like, i have a raw, physical reaction to them

Heez, Thursday, 10 September 2020 15:57 (three years ago) link

Her cover of "Out on the Weekend" v. fetching too

The coda on Hollywood is verrrrry Candy Says

― Οὖτις I want her to get back with Willie, at least one more time ("Mendocino County Line" got Grammy for Best Country Duet, and was something of a hit). At this point, could be, should be "Pale Blue Eyes." Seriously, just imagine. What the h-e-double-hocky-sticks, he did "Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other" a long time ago now.
