I’m going to take half of Chloe’s candy tonight & give it to some kid who sat at home. It’s never to early to teach her about socialism. pic.twitter.com/3ie9C0jv2G

did it occur to him that the "kid who sat at home" maybe was unable to participate due to illness or some other debilitating condition?

second thought regarding trump, jr.'s tweet. it's not strange that he can't figure out that when his daughter opens a shopping bag, holds it out and asks people to put candy in it, she is getting an unearned gift, not engaging in productive work.

Catching up after being away...

Ned:

the legal firm of Breenpugh, which sounds vaguely obscene

I moved on her like a bitch and grabbed her by the breenpugh

lagoon:

the thing u have to understand is that the campaign was primarily staffed by bad hombres

Well, what can you do? Real Americans won't take these dirty, dangerous jobs.

But slightly more seriously Treeship:

i'm not seeing how we go from this indictment to anything that could lead to Trump being impeached

Well, I dunno - I don't think that's Mueller's goal (and is above his pay grade anyway). Damage, yes; impeachment, no. In my view.

My fantasy-world hope is that Mueller knows Trump is currently ascendant, but also that he won't be always. Mueller (like a lot of DC doodz) wants to be seen as having been on the right side of history in future.

It is therefore good positioning to come out with indictments of a trickle of minor players. Doesn't seriously harm the king slug, but provides a sense of embattlement and of sleaze; of something that could unravel if you pulled the right thread.

Even if nothing impeachment-friendly materializes, anyone associated with the effort has the right kind of cred (I worked to take down the Orange Menace).

It's kind of impossible to believe it's been almost a year since the night I experienced more horrified dread than I thought imaginable (and I've had some godawful experiences, but that was some real 'the bottom has dropped out and everything you know is a lie and your favorite food will forevermore taste like farts'-level dread). I guess I feel sorta hopeful that we're not all just ashes at this point. Which is not to say I don't thoroughly expect to have that experience, just that it's kind of a cool gift that we got more time to take in a little more life before it becomes just a theoretical concept.

Winky Carrothers (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 04:00 (six years ago) link

I scheduled Wednesday-Friday off work for that week because I wanted to recuperate after such a long and awful campaign cycle and contemplate the next four years of slow but steady progress.

I ended up spending most of those three days in bed, sleeping when I could, avoiding all news coverage, and basically thinking the nation would totally collapse before 2020. Still might happen, but I've been collecting records again as a joyful diversion tactic (I've bought 700 records in the last 12 months).

it definitely felt worse knowing that there were so many people reveling in others' misery, especially given the outcome essentially sealed the fate of fact-based argument for good. was pretty much anticipating every argument with a Trump supporter to contain some form of "where'd you get that, the same news sources that said Hillary had a 99.999999% chance to win?", and so far I was absolutely right.

I remember the next day at work being fairly somber. Most people wouldn't talk about their political affiliations (especially not during this cycle) but on that day you could tell. so many people looked like they hadn't slept all night. even the people who I knew voted for him didn't look happy - there was this visible guilt on their faces which I'm totally not imagining. a lot of, "well, I didn't expect him to actually WIN!". most confusing were a few people who were like, "yeah, I found out this morning"...like, how could you not stay up for this??

frogbs, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 04:52 (six years ago) link

that said, the longer this goes, the more it looks like we're heading into a situation where practically everyone in the country wishes that Hillary had won instead. so, that's nice.

frogbs, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 04:54 (six years ago) link

because I’ve spotted enough election night heartbreaks in the past to know when it’s a good time to have a couple drinks and go to bed early?

seriously, I think I was asleep by 10:30pm central time for the election night

mh, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 04:55 (six years ago) link

Oh, you should've tried that other thing where your heart throws itself against your ribcage like a frenzied beast and you lie in bed probably having only having a severe panic attack but mostly certain you're going to go into cardiac arrest and expire before the sun rises, it was a real treat.

Winky Carrothers (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 05:24 (six years ago) link

It was a bad night for sure. Where I feared a multitude of evil this first year, most of the evil plans are halted or grinding down. This is good. Bad is being bludgeoned to death every single day with the shiny, proud and loud stupidity of Trump and his goons. The profound dumbness of it all might even be worse than the evil. There's a chimp in the white house, what will he do today etc.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 08:54 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I kind of assumed Trump would be an ineffectual dipshit as president. I was and remain more concerned about the attendant effects of his being president. How many people were comfortable vocally defending Nazis this time last year compared to today? How many public schools are going to be left standing in four years? How many antisocial boundaries are people going to push against until they break because they keep seeing the POTUS getting away with it? There's plenty to be optimistic about, for sure, but this ride is still pretty far from over.
