headlamps, esp lil LED guys are just so handy to have. worth having one in the glovebox imo

gbx, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 17:18 (six years ago) link

handhelds are a plus because unlike the headlamps, they don't blind oncoming traffic on the trails

erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 17:22 (six years ago) link

the other drawback with headtorches is that if it's foggy, or if it's cold enough for you to see your breath, the torch will just illuminate the mist directly in front of your face and you won't be able to see the trail at all. but you can just remove it a carry it in your hand instead of course

plp will eat itself (NickB), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 17:28 (six years ago) link

The headlamps are usually quite directable to the ground ime, and encounters with runners and walkers is usually really good.

The only blinding-level people I encounter are always bikes with 600-1500+ lumen abominations (they do have good uses elsewhere). My opinion there is - if u can’t make it with 200-300 lumens on a reasonable road/bikepath, you’re either going 30 mph or need your eyes checked.

What is fog?

for the last while (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 17:33 (six years ago) link

if the trail isn't level, all front-facing lamps are going to end up blinding traffic coming in your direction... a good reason not to stress too much about angling them properly, you can't win. the ones with their lamps set to strobe are the only ones who really irritate me. love those lamps with the gentle pulse setting where the lamp fades in and out.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 17:45 (six years ago) link

Doing night rides with other people, it’s kind of an arms race. Doesn’t matter how bright your lights are, if you have someone behind you with more lumens, you feel like you can’t see shit in front of you because of the shadow

plp will eat itself (NickB), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 17:46 (six years ago) link

Xp

plp will eat itself (NickB), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 17:46 (six years ago) link

I just get a fix on the next stretch of trail and keep going with my eyes closed until the bright lamps pass by, it's kinda fun

erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 17:49 (six years ago) link

i run w a headlamp in the dark sometimes, an adventure

lag∞n, Friday, 3 November 2017 22:01 (six years ago) link

erry red flag (f. hazel), Saturday, 4 November 2017 02:50 (six years ago) link

love it

lag∞n, Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:34 (six years ago) link

two months pass...

8 mile road race yesterday. Wasn't sure how it'd go post-Christmas but managed a respectable 52:56

groovypanda, Monday, 29 January 2018 11:47 (six years ago) link

good going gp, that's a solid time. how are the joints today?

faust apes (NickB), Monday, 29 January 2018 11:55 (six years ago) link

Yeah nice, gp!

I dont run much but i feel like i should do something like that (but sloowwer).

Hunt3r, Monday, 29 January 2018 14:51 (six years ago) link

haven't been doing a lot of running myself recently what with one thing and another, but i was easing off a bit anyway as i've had a few visits to the cardiologist who's concerned that i might have some sort of heart defect (was initially referred to him after some dizzy spells last christmas). had an mri scan just before christmas, have been called back in to discuss the results with him next week. have a dreadful feeling that he'll ask me to cut my running right back, going to be a major thing for me if that is the case :(

faust apes (NickB), Monday, 29 January 2018 15:22 (six years ago) link

Yeah, that would be difficult! Take care tho.

Hunt3r, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:44 (six years ago) link

I would love to do any amount of running at this point. As mentioned up thread, tibia stress fracture. I did the boot for six weeks, went to PT, got cleared to run/walk, which I did conservatively for a few weeks before the symptoms returned. Follow up MRI, fracture not completely healed, no more running. My bone density scan came back normal, so not the issue there, but it just seems the placement of the fracture is making it hard to heal. Trying some sort of bone stimulator next, maybe back in the boot, crutches worst case scenario.

Jeff, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:45 (six years ago) link

oh jeez jeff i'm sorry :(

what a fine bunch we are

faust apes (NickB), Monday, 29 January 2018 15:48 (six years ago) link

What does an ortho guy dude do when you outline what an outlier you are in terms of volume (im obv making some big assumptions there sorry)? Is your doc an ultra specialist?

Hunt3r, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:50 (six years ago) link

Or ortho woman sorry all

Hunt3r, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:51 (six years ago) link

And i dont know running- who would be considered a volume outlier, where’s normal anymore?

Hunt3r, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:53 (six years ago) link

three months pass...

First sub-40 10K yesterday in Newport 10K.

Was also the first Newport Marathon and a great day all round.

groovypanda, Monday, 30 April 2018 11:21 (five years ago) link

Damn, that’s moving. I’ve done sub 20 5k’s but no way I could manage two of them back to back.

Jeff, Monday, 30 April 2018 11:25 (five years ago) link

Having brand new shoes helped and I always find that the adrenaline/crowds you get in an event like that gives you another five to ten percent.

groovypanda, Monday, 30 April 2018 11:50 (five years ago) link

Oh I’m back to running. After my third MRI, finally clear that the stress fracture has completely healed. Now a conservative come back, run/walking for a bit, working my way back up to continuous running. Looks like a full is out for this year though.

Jeff, Monday, 30 April 2018 12:08 (five years ago) link

nice work GP! and hooray Jeff!

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Monday, 30 April 2018 12:19 (five years ago) link

Cheers Nick.

I do a lot of hills and intervals but other than swimming, I don't do any other exercising outside of running.

Anyone recommend any exercises to do that will help with the running?

groovypanda, Monday, 30 April 2018 14:52 (five years ago) link

lifting is supposed to be good squats deadlifts bench/overhead press, makes u a more powerful runner + strengthening yr core is super valuable for form/stability, my experience with lifting and running backs this up, you obvs wanna watch out for gaining weight which is pretty easy with lifting, also you dont want to overtrain as lifting is pretty tiring, i read somewhere it was good to lift more in the early phases of training for a race then taper it down as your training mileage increases which stands to reason, lifting is fun too if youre into the working on yr form aspect of running lifting particularly the compound lifts i mentioned are really form heavy

lag∞n, Monday, 30 April 2018 19:58 (five years ago) link

plyo is supposed to be good too various skips bounds and so forth, pretty common for runners to train with those u can mix them in with sprints and so forth

this is my advice to the person who is way faster than i will ever be lol

lag∞n, Monday, 30 April 2018 20:00 (five years ago) link

if youve never lifted before you can see some pretty rapid results, the famous noob gains

lag∞n, Monday, 30 April 2018 20:04 (five years ago) link

bombing into thread to note a magnificent 2k result of 11 mins this warm saturday morning

get in

.b derf (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 May 2018 11:18 (five years ago) link

Nice one.

Got a sub 19 (just) in the Parkrun this morning. Fastest I've been since last Summer and that extra bit of speed probably down to brand new shoes.

Was very warm mind

groovypanda, Saturday, 5 May 2018 16:22 (five years ago) link

very poor 2k pace for new shoes tbh

.b derf (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 May 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

just saw a mom's day 5k listed, thought "hell, maybe i should do my first running event in _years_," then i saw...$45. that seems super excessive to me for a non-charity fundraiser. how much would you/should i be willing to pay for a fuckin 5k? maybe i'm just way outta touch? correction, i am, but wtf?

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:31 (five years ago) link

Seems about right for these days, at least where I’m at. Not saying it is a good thing though.

Jeff, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:37 (five years ago) link

That seems really excessive compared to UK. That's about £34 which is more than I've paid for 10K events. Think the half marathon I did last year was only £39.

There was a fairly prestigious 5K race nearby on Monday and entry was just £15

groovypanda, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:50 (five years ago) link

Found another local 5k/10k this weekend (closer actually) for $30, but no t-shirt, i'm fine with that.

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 20:13 (five years ago) link

just need to brag somewhere about this to feel good i guess. i ran the slickrock trail yesterday. that shit was hard. the end.

you bet, nancy (map), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 05:01 (five years ago) link

about halfway through i had a lot of "omg i can't believe this scenery is real and i'm running here omg omg" moments but after a few too many sandtraps and i don't even know what else, some heat and thirst issues probably, i was tripping and ready to be done but dear god it's a beautiful place. i have my annual pass ($25) and it's 10 minutes away so i definitely see more running up and down walls of rock in my future, tho definitely not all 10 miles every time!

tomorrow morning before work i'm running a loop in the klondike bluffs trails, probably 6-7 miles. it's a huge area though, you could easily construct many big runs there and see new terrain every time. basically it's a slab of rock that tilts up to a ridge in three miles or so and the slab runs horizontally for idk 30 miles? trails follow the ridge at the top, cross the rock near the bottom, or go from bottom to top. there are lots of smaller ridges and valleys that are formed across the uplift. there are dinosaur steps and seas of slickrock. the trail system is only about 5-6 years old and the area has always been fairly remote so it's really pristine. the views at the top are really dramatic. there are all kinds of wild surfaces you're running on. it's fantastic.

you bet, nancy (map), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 05:34 (five years ago) link

glad you can enjoy slickrock! i remember my first time round it in 92- way more than my most recent time, maybe 5 years agoe. so mind blowing, a solidified ocean. it was free, nobody camped sand flats- I remember I was down on the river for a night, then I think pucker pass. lions back was still running jeeps. a lot more empty space, but still rad.

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 05:44 (five years ago) link

yeah people who have lived here for a while say it's changed pretty dramatically in 10 years, let alone 25!

you bet, nancy (map), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 05:56 (five years ago) link

yup and in 92 it was barely an mtb mecca and you could meet ppl from moto world who remembered it pre-mtb as a moto track, right? It’s always mutatis mutandis here on earth... have a good run-

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 11:50 (five years ago) link

still haven't made it to moab u_u

gbx, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 20:18 (five years ago) link

i just registered for a 5k! anticipation...

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 20:21 (five years ago) link

Made it thru, beat reasonable objective time by 2 secs. I had no extra speed at the end, my energy expenditure was pretty right on for a tt. For a non runner it seemed fair and fun, and the pancakes and beer were legit tasty.

Hunt3r, Saturday, 12 May 2018 17:05 (five years ago) link

Sub 19 again this week. Added bonus was beating CJ from Eggheads

groovypanda, Saturday, 12 May 2018 20:04 (five years ago) link

Much respect. (but with a side of slightly resentful envy, how do u do it!?)

Hunt3r, Sunday, 13 May 2018 03:15 (five years ago) link

sub 19 is legit smashing it imo, kongrats gp

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Sunday, 13 May 2018 07:48 (five years ago) link
