FP: Should 31 be the new 51 y/n

The football forum I post to has an interesting system that isn't without its flaws. There's a Like button AND a LOL button, as well as a FP button. Three buttons for every post! The biggest difficulty comes with LOLs, which are handed out both for genuinely humorous content and embarrassing nonsense. I've thought maybe a fourth button - LOL @ - to differentiate from 'LOL with' - and perhaps a fifth, a sort of 'super like', which you can dole out thrice per week to distinguish full hero-worship from the posts you vaguely concur with. A sixth button would be a 'dislike' - not as strong as a flag but nonetheless admonitory in nature. Other buttons for gratitude, shock or incomprehension suggest themselves. It really is limitless when you think about it

a good system would be one where -- right below where someone posts -- there's a space where you can put a follow-up comment, perhaps of approval or derision, perhaps a further joke, perhaps suggesting the thread steer more towards your own interests

that is sedition and you belong in a facility

imago, Monday, 30 October 2017 11:57 (six years ago) link

instead of having options for how ppl express themselves, you want to force them to communicate in a box

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 30 October 2017 12:04 (six years ago) link

what about if all threads were polls and answers could only be expressed as sub-polls?

I would like to cast my vote for a textless, all-button ILX.

Something like FP has to scale, I think. After all, with a million posters 51 would be achieved too often to be useful, and with 50 posters it wouldn't be reached. If we have fewer posters now maybe it should be scaled down; I don't really care either way. I've only ever clicked the FP button by mistake on my phone, as far as I recall.

who says humanity ever scaled

Fewer posters since when? When was FP introduced?

nashwan, Monday, 30 October 2017 16:11 (six years ago) link

I seriously doubt we have fewer posters due to FP/SB or anything like that. It is more likely its because we aged out, and also a lot of women left ILX for reasons I'm sure no one needs to go over for the enth time.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 00:01 (six years ago) link

Going over things for the enth time ... on ILX ... where there are currently 200+ new posts arguing about the merits of Tusk vs. The White Album?

sarahell, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 04:49 (six years ago) link

yeah but this time someone is totally wrong about the white album

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 04:54 (six years ago) link

i never thought a late night bump about the white album being scary would cause so much tsuris

flappy bird, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 05:03 (six years ago) link

scary is not a word I associate with anything about the Beatles, except for maybe the thought of contracting diseases from their rotting corpses

sarahell, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 05:05 (six years ago) link

LBI

in lieu of lowering the cap, how about this: tell us who you want to banned, and i will FP them. sure many others would be happy to oblige

killfile/ block poster on zing takes the edge off ilx’s worst (tusk white album thread is Swiss cheese chez moi) but maybe The System could auto fp the fools we’ve blocked since as it is I have to actually look at the trash to fp it o/w I’m not doing my part to purify ilx

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 18:26 (six years ago) link

The System could auto fp the fools we’ve blocked

Seems like there would be plenty of reasons to block someone you didn't particularly care for that don't rise to bannable offenses. The point of blocking/killfiling is precisely that it is personal to oneself and tailors ILX to your own predilections. Banning is universal and affects all ILX.

Yeah to FP and ban people is pretty serious & really only extends to personal attacks, thread stalking, and obviously if they're being openly racist/homophobic/misogynistic/etc etc etc.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 18:37 (six years ago) link

I was going to say that people who post without actually engaging with others is the worst, but maybe the worst people just have every other poster killfiled

mh, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 18:38 (six years ago) link

do you mean ignoring people or not engaging with people in good faith conversation?

flappy bird, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 18:39 (six years ago) link

Yeah to FP and ban people is pretty serious & really only extends to personal attacks, thread stalking, and obviously if they're being openly racist/homophobic/misogynistic/etc etc etc.

mh, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:06 (six years ago) link

Quotes around "music" also a fair request imo

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:06 (six years ago) link

at least I got a new screen name out of this

the David Gilmour of 9/11 (DJP), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:08 (six years ago) link

this is the story: I accidentally posted something in the "unusual details in wikipedia articles" thread that was meant for the twin peaks thread. it was a detail about the building in the opening scene of the first episode not existing, and that someone had figured out the made up building was in the same spot as a church that was destroyed on 9/11, along with a very old Sycamore tree. just something to think about within the twin peaks thread. then Turrican said "Flappy bird is to 9/11 as Roger Waters is to WWII," because i guess he's read enough of my posts to figure out that I lived next to the Twin Towers when 9/11 happened and felt it was necessary to insult me apropos of nothing. Fuck him.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:10 (six years ago) link

DJP with all due respect it's really not funny

flappy bird, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:10 (six years ago) link

do you think he has a little counter on his screen where he gives himself points for being rude

mh, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:11 (six years ago) link

xp. it's at least a little bit funny

-_- (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:11 (six years ago) link

mh, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:11 (six years ago) link

i'm not sure T thinks he's engaging with real people.

i mean i hope not.

Pope Urban the Legend (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:12 (six years ago) link

"Flappy bird is to 9/11 as Roger Waters is to WWII,"

Right, I see, so you father died in 9/11.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:13 (six years ago) link

being an annoying pedantic asshole is one thing but the 9/11 comment is so over the line & I really don't want that to become a joke because it's not funny and I'd really like to not have to read it in display names and shit, sorry if i'm being a downer
