Of course it's better than Mario 64.

Mario has never controlled better. No third person character has ever controlled better.

What does "unfun, typical platformer shit" mean? xp

It's not a revolution like BOTW, but it expands the ways in which a 3D Mario can operate, without losing the platforming part. Most 3d 'platformers' originating in the 32 bit era are not about platforming but about mucking about looking for shit. This is still about platforming, but allows for a looser structure, more exploration and more freeform platforming than before. Despite the more open nature of the worlds the game has never felt tighter or better paced.

abcfsk, Monday, 30 October 2017 08:34 (two years ago) link

yeah yr right this would be so much better if mario was a bald space marine slogging through a world painted entirely in shades of brown

yup this is the only other thing it could be and I'm mad that it's not!

there's a lot of 'navigate this one square wide stretch without making a single misstep or you die' on the level I'm on (sweets level)

sleepingbag, Monday, 30 October 2017 08:43 (two years ago) link

That's what I come to Mario for. Hard platforming. It's what I want more of basically.

abcfsk, Monday, 30 October 2017 08:48 (two years ago) link

sorry ilxorz I made a typo when I mildly criticized this video game, meant to say 'this game is good but it would be better if capitalism was abolished'

that i can get behind

I beat Bowser yesterday. The last three worlds are collectively so fucking delightful.

got my Mario switch yesterday, had a few fun hours with it before bedtime. i haven't bought a Mario game new since SNES Super Mario All Stars so this is pretty crazy lol. absolutely gorgeous game!

really loving the trippiness of Mario's discorporate adventures. throwing the hat on the frog was really intense, seeing Mario being sucked through the bardos, his ego twisted into the cosmos on the way to renewed consciousness. then later seeing telephone wire electricity Mario... woah...

Mario's seen some things

he's basically Agent Cooper.

T-Rex was awesome, i loved the smashy gameplay, and the naturalistic graphics were impressive. it was a little disconcerting to see the realistic dinosaur, given that we have (beloved) dinosaurs already in Mario and Yoshi looks nothing like a realistic T-Rex. its kind of eerie when you see it in a Mario game. i do love how this game plays with the Uncanny Valley type stuff. i saw a realistic human and car out in the desert. it was really funny to come across. i can't wait to see what they do with New Donk City.

Otm, just got to the end credits and the last few worlds were amazing, so many interesting curve balls one after another. One of the areas had a track that sounded like Sun Ra in places! Now to see what the post game stuff is like ...

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 02:05 (two years ago) link

this game is almost as good as sonic 3 and knuckles

the ghost of tom, choad (thomp), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 07:45 (two years ago) link

yeah I still can't get over how pretty the Bowser's castle level is in this, that was a fantastic stylistic choice

ciderpress, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 15:29 (two years ago) link

Continuing to fuck around looking for moons, buying outfits, and jumping forever on NPCs is delightful enough to keep me from going back to my Stardew Valley farm just yet. It's good.

.oO (silby), Sunday, 5 November 2017 02:47 (two years ago) link

It's good.

agree, solid B-/C+

sleepingbag, Sunday, 5 November 2017 02:51 (two years ago) link

i got 550 moons and feel accomplished enough to put it aside. might go back someday and get the rest but i've got other games to play

ciderpress, Sunday, 5 November 2017 03:02 (two years ago) link

i'd go b+ personally. still have not beaten though.

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Sunday, 5 November 2017 19:26 (two years ago) link

i'd give it a 4 out of 5 which sounds a lot nicer than "B-/C+" but i guess is the same thing

ciderpress, Sunday, 5 November 2017 19:30 (two years ago) link

Yup, sounds about right, B+/A-, I'd say.
I'm happy with it - though of course, just about any game would seem a bit underwhelming after Breath of the Wild - not every game HAS to be a thrilling 100-hour journey. I'm even fine with the platforming being fairly easy, after suffering through most of Sunshine back in the day. Some of the post-game challenges are pushing me, though, and I'll likely give up before completing most of the second tier Freerunning courses, for example.

Nhex, Sunday, 5 November 2017 20:32 (two years ago) link

its more linear than i expected but i am loving this game. right now im at New Donk City and have been consistently surprised by so many things. it feels like a culmination of Mario games and control schemes, all perfected in glorious HD, with a post-Mario Maker sense of the playful. the transforming stuff is cool and imo rare enough to where it never feels like a gimmick.

currently in New Donk City and really loving it. i got to the 2D part and was saying "Wow" outloud to myself. always hoped they would do something cool w that area and hell yes this was awesome. i love the nostalgic 2D bits in the game. the way it's kind of like Mario Maker is etched into the sides of buildings and ruins. the past world rendered as hieroglyphics in the new landscape.

i am getting LOLz also from the Sonic references. there was one level in the forest where you could make Mario run and collect giant rings. then a large curve later shows up, upside-down, in a triumphant and nostalgic sequence, and honestly it's a funny moment that kind of takes the pomposity out of it. that's what this game's all about really. just playing around. and it plays great.

pirate goombas: cutest thing ever?

also the boss fight vs. the octopus, holy crap, this is actually difficult! very fun and challenging tho! for real a highlight.

tbh not that i demand decent boss fights in a Mario game but it is a nice change of pace from the Rabbids earlier. those felt like the piss easy mini bosses in SMB3. just one mechanic over and over. this on the other hand is crazy. i'm flying all up and down the Z axis. i'm narrowly avoiding missiles as i chasing this giant octopus across the beach. and i'm an octopus too! aaah!

just swimming around as a fish is wonderful. i am looking forward to coming back to find all the hidden moons after i win story mode.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 8 November 2017 01:16 (two years ago) link

I'm getting near to the end (I think), and it's been a pretty fun game, so far. I got so spoiled by Zelda though.

I've been able to beat all the bosses after a few tries, so far, which is just about the right difficulty level. The biggest issue for me is (as with all of the 3D Mario games since Mario 64) is just getting the controls/camera to work. It works about as well as can be expected, but I still find myself falling off the edge of stuff and missing moving platforms, etc. Not sure how they could make it any better, but it's still frustrating.

DJI, Wednesday, 8 November 2017 02:31 (two years ago) link

we should poll all the different Marios that you can be. there is some cool stuff you can turn into in here.

mario 64 mario forever

ciderpress, Thursday, 9 November 2017 01:48 (two years ago) link

M64 is great. i prefer SMO bc there are none of the control or camera issues in the earlier game. anything with the snow/ice levels, anything with sledding, or flying, was a nightmare. i can see how someone could grow up with the game would not mind those bits or have figured it out long ago but for me it may still be a while before i beat it. of course it was one of the first 3d games ever so even with the issues it had it was a staggering pioneering achievement.

SMO is great because it is like the Imax version of M64. it uses a very similar control scheme and exploratory level design. the camera angles also feel very M64 inspired - even with a modern camera there is a primacy of cinematic vistas. SMO sort of acts as a sort of compendium of all the previous games: it has mechanics and artwork from Super Mario Bros., it has the vegetable carrying/throwing of Super Mario Bros. 2, it has the water spraying and ooze cleaning of Super Mario Sunshine, it has the Bee Life and experimental gravity mini-games of the Super Mario Galaxy titles.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 9 November 2017 03:09 (two years ago) link

ok at this Ruined Kingdom! damn good level design! wow! wtf we in Bloodborne now?

the last world had simple fire puzzles you lighting pyres with your flame in order to open locked doors and passageways just like Zelda.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 9 November 2017 03:59 (two years ago) link

nvmd it's like Shadow of the Colossus

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 9 November 2017 04:06 (two years ago) link

M64 does have the edge in music, that is for sure. the castle interior theme is so beautiful. the first stage overworld theme gets in my head all the damn time. it's still synthesized jazz. the new games, SMO included, are a little more traditionally orchestrated. i mean, Koji Kondo is a frickin' genius, no way anything can come close to that og stuff.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 9 November 2017 05:00 (two years ago) link

the song in Super Mario Odyssey that plays when you are in the hat shop reminds me of "Doo Wah Diddy" by Manfred Mann. that's pretty cool.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 9 November 2017 05:05 (two years ago) link

i think SMO has the best soundtrack of any of the mario games

ciderpress, Thursday, 9 November 2017 05:10 (two years ago) link

the Galaxy soundtrack was incredible. I didn't think they'd be able to top it

frogbs, Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:03 (two years ago) link

wtf we in Bloodborne now?

yeah i did think there was some deliberate soulsborne vibes in that area, further strengthening my commitment to double-dip on any and all of those games if they ever make it to the switch

no game will ever have a better soundtrack than Super Mario Bros.

speaking of mario noises:

Super Mario World repurposed its orchestra hit instrument to form... a familiar sound effect!!

— Lynn 🧡 (@chordbug) November 8, 2017

Karl Malone, Thursday, 9 November 2017 17:55 (two years ago) link

thats pretty rad. yeah there is actually a musical element to all the old sound effects. like picking up a coin from SMB NES is just B to E played really fast. the going down a pipe theme is three notes repeating in quick succession. the 33 1/3 book goes deep into all that stuff, there is a reason for the modes and keys used for every sound in Mario.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 9 November 2017 18:00 (two years ago) link

xp it also exists in SMO so you can have the best of both worlds

ciderpress, Thursday, 9 November 2017 18:05 (two years ago) link

idk I honestly rate this game slightly lower than SMB2 with its endless towers of chains and climbing, I found it excruciatingly tedious

Zelda Switch was my favourite in the series though, I'm a big fan of the system but Mario needs Big And Meaningful Goals not thousands of moons that you trip over

flamboyant goon tie included, Saturday, 5 January 2019 07:10 (eleven months ago) link

on the first play through this game didn’t do a lot for me, but recently i played through it for the fourth or fifth time (top of 804 moons, ~150 hrs in total). definitely more fun on repeated goes.

the one thing that doesn’t sit well with me (and honestly it’s a stretch, i don’t really care) is how some levels (new donk, cascades) can be so finely constructed and textured, and others (the lost world) look like duplo. it feels like 2–3 separate studios built their own levels and it was all chucked together at the end.

calamity gammon (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 January 2019 12:02 (eleven months ago) link

ten months pass...

Whenever Mario hits a wall during his rolling move in Super Mario Odyssey, he will assume a saddened expression for three frames at the moment of impact. This expression is not used in any of Mario's other animations. Here it is from various angles.
