i support bernard snowy's proposal, seems sound.if it's true that there are fewer of us, that makes us more vulnerable to assholes hanging around forever, never to reach 51 but able to really derail every thread at their whim. i always thought 51 was kind of shockingly high but i guess people used to do a lot more lol-SBing and you had to compensate for that.

btw at first glance I assumed this was a thread about flagging anyone who posted some lifestyle article about how age 31 is "the new 51"

I suspect this poll was prompted by a particular poster who may have been 51'ed under a different username, but came back and is still a frequent irritant. My sense is that if any poster rises to the level of unacceptability requiring ejection, ILX will muster the necessary 51 FPs.
I personally doubt that there have been many posters who accumulated more than 31 active FPs who did not also pass the 51 threshold soon afterwards, but that is merely a guess on my part. Picking the 'right' number is not a science, but a fairly inexact heuristic. I'm fine with any number, as long as it is high enough that it cannot be driven by relatively small cabal. 51 has been adequately functional so far, imo.
I also note that 51 has deeply entered ILX lore. Changing it would render that lore illegible.

― k3vin k., Monday, 30 October 2017 09:30 (one year ago) Permalink
Thing is, on the rare occasions that a particularly obnoxious or abusive/racist/homophobic new poster appears, they tend to attract 10-20 FPs almost immediately which alerts us to them. Most of the time it's so obvious that we just ban them straight away, in the same way we would if we came across those posts by reading a thread normally.
As far as it goes for ILX regulars, the high threshold is kind of the point. You need to piss off a lot of people to get to that point. A lower threshold would be more open to abuse and as Kevin K says it's a solution to a problem we don't really have right now.

ok, this started as a flaggable posts riff, but seriously, wouldn't the true ilx equivalent of likes/+1s be a tick.jpg link and an invisible tally of clicks until a post hits 51 and is then auto added to an aggregated excelsior page.

The football forum I post to has an interesting system that isn't without its flaws. There's a Like button AND a LOL button, as well as a FP button. Three buttons for every post! The biggest difficulty comes with LOLs, which are handed out both for genuinely humorous content and embarrassing nonsense. I've thought maybe a fourth button - LOL @ - to differentiate from 'LOL with' - and perhaps a fifth, a sort of 'super like', which you can dole out thrice per week to distinguish full hero-worship from the posts you vaguely concur with. A sixth button would be a 'dislike' - not as strong as a flag but nonetheless admonitory in nature. Other buttons for gratitude, shock or incomprehension suggest themselves. It really is limitless when you think about it
― imago, Monday, 30 October 2017 11:52 (one year ago) Permalink
a good system would be one where -- right below where someone posts -- there's a space where you can put a follow-up comment, perhaps of approval or derision, perhaps a further joke, perhaps suggesting the thread steer more towards your own interests

Something like FP has to scale, I think. After all, with a million posters 51 would be achieved too often to be useful, and with 50 posters it wouldn't be reached. If we have fewer posters now maybe it should be scaled down; I don't really care either way. I've only ever clicked the FP button by mistake on my phone, as far as I recall.

I seriously doubt we have fewer posters due to FP/SB or anything like that. It is more likely its because we aged out, and also a lot of women left ILX for reasons I'm sure no one needs to go over for the enth time.

well, last time it was because we had just abolished conscription, withdrawn from Vietnam, made university free, abolished the death penalty, released Papua New Guinea to be an independent country under the UN, brought in universal health care, instituted laws against racial discrimination, returned land rights to native people, set up arts grants and community radio licences, lowered the voting age to 18, allowed our third largest state-equivalent to elect senators, federally funded the connecting of homes to sewers, cut international tariffs, funded state schools, allowed single mothers to receive welfare for the first time, and brought in both equal pay and a minimum wage for women.
so I guess you guys still have a way to sink before Betty needs to step in again, yeah
