wow this is lovely

xp. really? spacious is not the term i'd associate with this track. i find it claustrophobic and oppressive, as if a dark cloud would be above me which is just about to disintegrate into pouring rain. it has got a little bit of the godspeed crescendo formula going on where the music is building up all the time which i find really annoying these days. in the end the music builds down again but it does not really help. i very much prefer the tracks from "on land". i guess that is as there are real nature recordings on it and not onyl synthie washes.

I knew I could count on you to hate this amazing music

Sounds like a rave review!

Karl Malone, Thursday, 26 October 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link

yeah, i mean that sounds right, but at some point the cloud suddenly clears and you are bathed in glorious sunlight, you know?

tylerw, Thursday, 26 October 2017 15:50 (six years ago) link

the part 2/3 in where the accompaniment (presumably eno's?) drops out, and then the sound comes back in - goosebumps. so good. also i feel like a doofus because i don't know how to refer to whatever shields is doing (presumably - also i feel like a doofus because i'm just assuming kevin shields is doing the kevin shieldsy-noise and eno is making the eno-noise) - "the sound"? the guitar? waves of guitar noise? fuck. it's good though.

Karl Malone, Friday, 27 October 2017 00:21 (six years ago) link

^^ yes especially when the pitch starts to bend up and the noise kicks back in

brimstead, Friday, 27 October 2017 00:34 (six years ago) link

maybe that note isn't bending... hard to tell before it gets subsumed back into the wall of noise

brimstead, Friday, 27 October 2017 00:36 (six years ago) link

Any way to download an MP3 of this somewhere?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 27 October 2017 06:51 (six years ago) link

Οὖτις’s link above still works

willem, Friday, 27 October 2017 06:53 (six years ago) link

Grabbed it on slsk last night

calstars, Friday, 27 October 2017 14:08 (six years ago) link

Getting Blade Runner vibes off this. The chimes obviously, but also the sweeping bendy notes, CS-80 swapped out for guitar.

Good new interview with more engaging lies from Kevin about when a new album will come out.

Hey Kevin: less talk, more action

calstars, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 16:16 (six years ago) link

Less talk?

imago, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 16:19 (six years ago) link

Good interview with him. I sort of feel the same way he feels about volume. I've seen lots of shows and lots of loud shows and rarely ever wear earplugs, yet I don't think my years at 42 are bad. In fact, I think they're still pretty good, and I've always wondered if that had something to do with how I listen to music versus how loud I listen to music. Though tbh, I don't listen to music at home or in the car, or on headphones, at high volumes.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:38 (six years ago) link

so tour summer 2018 then, and he's "100%" certain (:D) that the new album will be out around then? cool!

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:40 (six years ago) link

kevin shields is the friend you tell to show up 3 hours earlier than everyone else

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:40 (six years ago) link

The Eno-Shields is EXACTLY how you'd think that would go. Its an 'this is ok and here is why' sorta thing.

That's beautiful.

Has anyone put together a comp of these one-off tracks and remixes he has put out over the years before their last album?

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 2 November 2017 15:34 (six years ago) link

It's interesting that they must have decided not to rebuild the album cross-fades as a live mixdown and instead spent a year making custom edit blocks to do it! Presumably so the timing is as close to the original possible.

Surely they weren't editing the original masters so this analogue cut will be from a 3rd generation(?) tape.

apropos of nothing, here is a youtube mbv cover which i find inspiring. skip to 1:58

Wow, that is kind of impressive how well they integrated that into the song. It almost feels like a sample.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Thursday, 2 November 2017 17:21 (six years ago) link

Good, that.

Mark G, Thursday, 2 November 2017 23:28 (six years ago) link

I don't actually listen to a lot of live shows, but came across this recently and it's really something. "Isn't Anything" era soundboard recording:

Thanks, sounding great.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 3 November 2017 11:50 (six years ago) link

I must admit (sorry...) that this band is not my cup of tea ...and sincerely, i thought my recording was completely failed cause the voices are very blurred in the mix ... But no, it's the way they sound ...

lol

scoff walker (diamonddave85), Friday, 3 November 2017 15:41 (six years ago) link

this has gotten me to revisit MBV which I hadn't listened to much in the past two years. It's very good! It's certainly a less produced album than loveless.

akm, Friday, 3 November 2017 19:58 (six years ago) link

Belinda's vox missing from this SB recording... :-(

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 3 November 2017 20:33 (six years ago) link

Otherwise, A+

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 3 November 2017 20:33 (six years ago) link

Very extensive new interview with the man:

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 18:50 (six years ago) link

two months pass...

Let's settle this once and for all.

Many have tried to sound like MBV and without exception every single one has failed. But who's come closest? Maybe for just one song. Maybe for just one bit of a song.

imago, Sunday, 11 February 2018 23:45 (six years ago) link

I'll start the bidding with Cornelius - New Music Machine

imago, Sunday, 11 February 2018 23:52 (six years ago) link

fucking do my head in this band. i think theyre the best guitar band of their time, untouchable, so powerful, but kevin shields needs to get a haircut and move on. sitting about moping and remastering age old albums, recycling old material and passing it off as a new record... just write something new already.

meaulnes, Monday, 12 February 2018 00:29 (six years ago) link

m b v was new though, kind of - and it was great

now everyone answer my questionnnn

imago, Monday, 12 February 2018 00:40 (six years ago) link

There's a fantastic guitar band from Canada called No Joy. They can approximate the sound when they want to.

you have to crank this at mbv levels, but give this a shot:

Karl Malone, Monday, 12 February 2018 02:33 (six years ago) link

ooh, both Fleeting Joys and meaulnes' mate's band get pretty close! I think the latter is marginally winning this so far

oh of cooooourse! and the best thing about swirlies was that they were also completely their own thing, while also being able to fairly closely replicate the aural magic of shields

imago, Monday, 12 February 2018 10:05 (six years ago) link

Our Destiny, from the Purple Rain reissue has some woozy proto MBV guitars.

Cow_Art, Monday, 12 February 2018 10:16 (six years ago) link

I Was A Lover by TV on The Radio.

Almost sounds like MBV samples are thrown in there.

Cow_Art, Monday, 12 February 2018 10:18 (six years ago) link

cosign swirlies, "jeremy parker" for me to be more precise :)
