watched the first couple of episodes of this on netflix last night and my ulsterwoman missus was deeply and correctly offended by sam neill's horrifying belfast-by-way-of-auckland accent

I've noticed thia is really popular with people who should know better.

weirdest part was that despite it having all the trappings of prestige tv there were less sets and exteriors than an average episode of corrie

Season 4 was actually the best one to date - still not qualifying as good, but consistently entertaining and pacey.

Apart from when they are trying to prop up Tory cunts, The BBC doing a fucking tobacco enema up their own fucking corpse is always the fucking 2nd worse thing.

This seems to be a case of people paying attention to a mediocre show simply because it fits the mould of binge-watching boxset television, the format seems to be more important than the content tbh.

i was kinda intrigued when i first heard about it, because i almost always enjoy Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy. but it seems kinda cheap and pointless to a degree. it feels like an alt-right fantasy, complete w/the haircuts and the key adversary in the first couple of seasons being an frustrated + sexually inadequate straight-arrow. maybe it gets better, idk.

i'm annoyed how it ruined a perfectly decent Nick Cave song for me.

i liked the first season quite a bit, second was less good but still ok iirc but I dropped out after that. Cillian Murphy's great, I don't think the show works at all without someone as magnetic as him in the lead. Sam Neil is fucking terrible and ruins almost every scene he's in. really it's a Godfather redux more than anything else, everything is about "family" which honestly I liked, it cuts against the lone anti-hero perspective of most prestige TV.

it’s competent pulp i guess (accents aside) but it’s frustrating how it ends up hinting at more interesting stories than it ends up delivering, at least in the first season i’ve seen so far

like, i’d be much more interested in seeing how aunt polly ran the family business during the great war, or a more nuanced exploration of the attraction of communism for war veterans

i love sam neill generally but his character exists to be the Waingro here, someone super horrible to make the peaky blinders look good in comparison. and it's a terrible role. i don't think the show is necessarily completely horrible, it's watchable enough. but it gave me the sons of anarchy vibe, like we're supposed to be extremely impressed by these MEN. it's better than SoA, though. maybe.

Tommy Shelby's wife getting knocked off and immediately forgotten except as fuel for crazed sex with an insane russian duchess and to have a home for children named after her. also she was killed because his brothers are morons and he kinda let that slide.

paddy considine as the most evil priest ever and whose second job as a government agent made zero sense to me since it was never explained.

alexander siddig as the most saintly painter ever. i guess we've seen the last of him though.

however this season looked a lot better, a bit less cheap.

I’m not sure how the peaky blinders have consolidated enough power to wind up headquartered in a gangland downton abbey, since their entire strategy seems to have been to enter rooms loudly and smash glasses and maybe slap a “fooker” across his “gob”.

Who is more ridiculous as an Italian gangster, Noah Taylor or Adrien Brody? I can’t decide.

I don’t even know what Tom Hardy is doing.

The only “good, actually” scenes of S3 I think involved Hardy. The negotiation scene in his office and the very spittle-y confrontation scene in the final episode.

I think him having seemingly wandered in from the revenant and just changing accents and outfits is a plus here, he’s the only performer who seems to be having a good time.

Sat through the latest season bascially because my OH fancies Cillian Murphy and it really is utter shit. Dimly lit long boring talky scenes interspersed with people walking in slow motion with like The Fratellis or something playing in the background.

You could probably cut together a montage of all the scenes of the peaky blinders walking in slow motion through a smoky and/or fiery surrounding and it would be three hours long. Also the way they walk is a microcosm of the entire dumb show, it’s this real OTT idiot swagger.

I like Peaky Blinders.

Keep Steven Knight away from directing and showrunning, couldn’t finish this tbh and tried Rogue Heroes but ugh I was worn out after two episodes. His version of Great Expectations looks nightmarishly bad.
