Ah, the director Dean Devlin was producer/writer on a bunch of Emmerich movies. That makes sense.

I've never seen Gerard Butler act before, is his American accent always that bad does he usually look like a baw-faced bampot fae Paisley?

this guy doesn't get this movie at all.
The storm should be the star, not a fleeting sideshow from Gerard Butler’s most determined efforts to emote. The movie’s called Geostorm, after all, not Cool Guy’s Space Redemption.

this is gonna geoflop right? dumb title + butler has zero star power + everybody knows if you can get the bartender to scroll thru the channels long enough you'll find either 2012 or day after tomorrow + somewhat questionable scientific background... all the ingredients
― Doctor Casino, Sunday, 22 October 2017 23:18 (six years ago) link
(xp) Even his Scottish accent is sounding a bit ropey these days.

Butler has been churning out moneymakers on quiet weekend releases and eastern Europe production for some time now

I love how these movies always inevitably end up containing details like the following (from Bill Chambers' review):
It's the near future. Not much has changed, except the President is conspicuously not repulsive, "HoloFrames" have supplanted cell phones, and climate change is no longer an immediate threat, thanks to the creation of a global weather-management system called Dutch Boy, after the story of the little Dutch boy who plugs a leak in a dike with his finger. (Like all those movie scientists who've named their game-changer "Icarus," the christeners of Dutch Boy should've read to the end of the story.)

'For too long, we've been the underdog in the fight against nature's whims. But no more. Today, the unrivaled champion will face the technological upstart which will decisively end this reign of terror. Ladies and gentlemen, we present...The Challenger!'

it is flawless
i remember it being really dull and stupid, and evidently saving money by having as little to do with onscreen geostorms as possible. also a subplot with zazie beetz that was just straight up dropped completely. the climax was like dodging lightning bolts on the freeway median in orlando right? we def had fun making fun of it but if it were even 5-10 minutes longer it might have been impossible.
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 1 May 2020 00:46 (three years ago) link
yes yr spirits lift a lot when zazie starts drly mocking the younger terrible main guy but the euphoria doesnt last
its abt the details tho: "abbie cornish (born 1982), also known by her rap name DUSK"
― mark s, Friday, 1 May 2020 11:40 (three years ago) link
also tbf abt taking a drink whenever someone says DUTCHBOY
in this context it is colossally stupid but not at all dull
― mark s, Friday, 1 May 2020 11:41 (three years ago) link
Ooh, I share a birthday with Abbie Cornish. I may have to see this now. (For the same reason, I'm duty bound to buy all Kristin Hersh's records, watch/listen to all of Alexei Sayle's output and, er, stockpile 16mm footage of Abebe Bikila's greatest distance runs).

zazie beetz
Sounds like a phrase young people use when describing a disc of 'pop music' they have enjoyed to one of their chums.

Where did you see this? I'd have watched it. Still never seen Gerard Butler in anything. As I'm sure I've mentioned before, he's from the same part of Paisley as me, but I don't know his family at all - my mother probably did - and I always look out for anyone from Paisley, to see how they're doing. Apart from Tom Conti. he's a dick. And Andrew Neil.

The people in the space station make an excellent joke about how much older than expected Gerard Butler looks but don't stop short at saying that it's because he looks like a fat alcoholic rather than an astonaut.
LOLed anew at this.
