Trying this podcast. No way I’m going to be able to deal with these guys. It will be a miracle if I can make it through the first ep.

the greatest generation has some other fans on ilx, help me out here guys

midas / medusa cage match (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 19 October 2017 12:34 (six years ago) link

I guess there are some ok bits in there, but the jokes, I can’t. DS9 should be treated with reverence! Also they keep mispronouncing Nana Visitor’s name.

Jeff, Thursday, 19 October 2017 12:40 (six years ago) link

tbf i feel like objecting to the greatest generation on star trek purist grounds is acceptable

midas / medusa cage match (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 19 October 2017 12:42 (six years ago) link

It is making me want to do a rewatch though. Probably would be my 4th or 5th time through?

Jeff, Thursday, 19 October 2017 12:43 (six years ago) link

wait how is nana visitor's name pronounced

mookieproof, Thursday, 19 October 2017 12:51 (six years ago) link

Nah-nah

Jeff, Thursday, 19 October 2017 12:52 (six years ago) link

Give GG a chance. One problem with jumping in now is that much of the podcast features running gags that draw on 178 episodes of TNG, Trek ephemera, and a constellation of memes. You might first listen to some of the TNG episodes to get a feel for their schtick, which comes from a place of genuine affection for the show. When they're not making poop jokes, they can be very insightful, and they're not afraid to run against accepted wisdom on the series.

Millsner, Thursday, 19 October 2017 16:06 (six years ago) link

Also, "In the Cards" is one of the most joyous episodes of DS9. Easily makes my top 10.

Millsner, Thursday, 19 October 2017 16:08 (six years ago) link

The greatest gen guys are bigger Star Trek fans than they pretend to be. The 'a bit embarassed' part is a comedic role they play.

I'm a bit embarrassed by their grown-up beavis & butthead act but it is a good show, if only for the picard/wesley (the boy!) running gag.

picking this up again in s02 after a series of a/v issues

an oblivious odo turns into a monster every 16 hours: okay. i like the dude who plays his 'dad' (and that misguided romulan defector in tng)

bashir and o'brien are ambushed after helping to destroy biological weapons: i am not all that interested in how grumpy chief and puppy julian become friends

o'brien is a replicant: this was really good!

colony of settlers without technology: actress playing the bitchy colony leader did a great job; plot doesn't hold together, especially when they take her away to face justice (?) at the end and everyone's like, we don't mind being tricked and watching our friends die needlessly, we just love the community

old dude lives in fake settlement with hologram friends: rehash of tng episode (and maybe tos episode as well? can't remember)

trill hopeful interviews with dax: dax being rowdy was kind of fun, trill hopeful actor was bad, b-story with expanding proto-universe was hand-waved away in absurd fashion

cardassian dissident is quark's ex-lover: garak is always fun; everything else was terrible

main complaint is same as before (eg when quark let the terrorists who stole the dax symbiont onto the station) -- no consequences. in just this last one odo disobeys a direct order and frees the dissidents (presumably wrecking the chance for a prisoner transfer and creating a major diplomatic incident with cardassia), garak is very obviously revealed as a spy, quark gets away with dealing in cloaking devices, garak flat-out kills a cardassian gul and . . . nothing changes. everything goes back to normal at the end. c'mon

mookieproof, Friday, 27 October 2017 17:56 (six years ago) link

the o'brien replicant episode is really well executed yeah

ciderpress, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:06 (six years ago) link

Many good O’Brien eps in DS9.

Didn't know about that. Adam Nimoy's doc about his father wasn't bad, so I would definitely watch this

Nhex, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 06:29 (six years ago) link

Aw, no Avery Brooks involvement? :( sad. Maybe they'll get him and RDM later.

Nhex, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 06:32 (six years ago) link

That's not surprising, but still disappointing. I always think of him as a reluctant participant in the Trek culture industry.

BTW those $200 cookies could've been mine too. 😭

Potato Wave (Leee), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 06:39 (six years ago) link

Still regret I didn't go for the dinner with nah nah.

Jeff, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 10:31 (six years ago) link

the o'brien replicant episode is really well executed yeah

Ah dangit missed a chance for a lol ahem If there's one thing O'Brien knows it's executions.

I just rewatched the second episode again, and can see where people might complain about Avery Brooks's acting -- his laugh when he's having dinner with Dax is soooooo weird.

Entree 3000 (Leee), Saturday, 11 November 2017 02:26 (six years ago) link

just watched 'crossover' to the mirror universe with sensual intendant kira

it was cool but also weird? like oh even minor bajoran plenipotentiaries know about alternate universes and have heard of james t. kirk and how he wrecked the terran empire

it was all worth it for salacious sisko tho

vic fontaine fuck off

clouds, Friday, 1 December 2017 18:17 (six years ago) link

the episode where he helps Nog with ptsd is good, though

mh, Friday, 1 December 2017 18:26 (six years ago) link

Can’t get behind the Vic hate. Probably one of the best holographic characters in ST history.

Jeff, Friday, 1 December 2017 18:39 (six years ago) link

low bar

mookieproof, Friday, 1 December 2017 18:43 (six years ago) link

yeah i loathed vic fontaine except for the episode with nog, which is one of the best episodes of the series

scoff walker (diamonddave85), Friday, 1 December 2017 18:46 (six years ago) link

ooof just imagining joe piscopo trying to cheer up nog by replicating himself into a million jerry lewises.

Hey this is pretty good

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 December 2017 02:26 (six years ago) link

I watched the S2 3 part opener and it felt to me like the BSG season that opened in the prison camp--a serious impressive arc that gets kinda haplessly left behind for more episodic stuff as the season proceeds.

Bashir is fuckin annoying

Dax is a better idea than she is character

Odo's a fuckin fascist

I'm super into the colonizer/colonized storylines that I feel like deal with morally tangled stuff well but man could I do without seeing more than a few minutes of quark ever again.

Wasn't that impressed by the introduction of the rebel colonists that everybody says is great

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 December 2017 02:52 (six years ago) link

Been sick all weekend so I just tore through all of season 2

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 December 2017 02:53 (six years ago) link

This series would have been even better if Roddenberry's original vision of the Ferengi as big-dicked sex villains had lived on.

louise ck (milo z), Monday, 18 December 2017 02:57 (six years ago) link

Did it not

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 December 2017 03:08 (six years ago) link

Ugh nog is the most annoying

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 December 2017 05:37 (six years ago) link

Get ready for people to quote those words back to you when it's season six and Nog is great :)

Millsner, Monday, 18 December 2017 15:53 (six years ago) link

The fact that DS9 has an entire Ferengi family drama embedded in it isn't immediately evident (and all of the stuff with Quark's mom and the Ferengi leadership is ridiculous) but Quark/Rom/Nog have as many scenes about family as the Siskos by the end

mh, Monday, 18 December 2017 16:01 (six years ago) link

its really just the ferengi squeal noise that i hate and nog is the most high pitched of all

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 December 2017 16:06 (six years ago) link

get ready for one of those squeals to make you cry later on in the series

scoff walker (diamonddave85), Monday, 18 December 2017 16:40 (six years ago) link

okay i'm now halfway through the third season and i still don't get it

quark just hacked into the personnel files to create a kira sex holosuite program and lol we're gonna let that slide too

lwaxanna's 'condition' just made everyone try to bite each others' chins (wtf stop 'kissing' like that)

the t. riker show had (vague) promise but turned out lame. so far the only a+ episode is secret android chief o'brien imo

mookieproof, Thursday, 28 December 2017 06:09 (six years ago) link

Secret Android Chief O'Brien was awesome

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 28 December 2017 18:16 (six years ago) link

first show aired 25 years ago today

mookieproof, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:02 (six years ago) link

that statement seems completely unreal to me

mh, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 22:03 (six years ago) link

delightful

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 4 January 2018 16:15 (six years ago) link

very happy to read that but wtf with that blue beard

Nhex, Thursday, 4 January 2018 20:12 (six years ago) link

and no avery brooks again :(

Nhex, Thursday, 4 January 2018 20:14 (six years ago) link
