haha, well the effect would be less intense if you could see me crouched underneath the table shaking the legs, bumping my head on it over and over again while running over to my camera with a lens propped up on a pile of magazines in lieu of a functioning tripod. i really need to get some decent (ultra-budget) gear.

incidentally, i think that guy's thesis is that we are officially past the uncanny valley now and that the question is what do we do with what lies ahead

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 17:13 (six years ago) link

my instinct earlier was that the far end of the uncanny valley is still quite a bit away. but i don't know, then i asked my partner what she thought, and she thought it was within sight, that there are already examples of digital creations that already fool us. and then i remembered peter cushing's character in star wars rogue one - i had no idea he was just CGI until long after i saw the movie. so in a sense, it already passed a form of the AI test. that would have been unthinkable 15 years ago, without some sort of camera trickery (like using a silhouette or having the character underwater or something). but rogue one showed peter cushing's character close-up, in good lighting, and with lines of dialogue. so the fact that it's been done suggests that other AI efforts will also soon fool the human eye. and that's just the characters - environmental effects often fool the eye as well.

so maybe he's right.

also a jacket hanging beneath a ceiling fan that i did earlier this week:

http://weinventyou.net/post/166270758665/jacket

i might have to do another version of it - the original footage was pretty decent and then i modified it so many times that i forgot what was good about it, then tried to do a drastic salvage job at the end

Wuuuuut. Makes me think for some reason of this piece where the artist filmed a helicopter but the frame rate matched up with the propeller's speed somehow so it looks like it's just hovering with a still propeller.

whoa, some of those are so cool! i love the granularity of the results. "In 17th place, we have..."

4th place in particular is a micro-nightmare

xpost i emailed LPC but i accidentally hit Send halfway through the second sentence. speaking of micro-nightmares. it's so weird, i've never done that before until earlier this year. two in a year! at any rate, it creates a panic because you want to quickly follow-up with the rest of the message. anyway, we'll see

a long time ago i was talking about making projections for a music video. it finally came out today! i made the projections for the ending sequence (3:33 til the end), both making them and also doing the projections at the shoot. it was fun! and nerveracking!

forthnecity? (forth density?)

update: lol, i can't believe i was hearing that as "forth" and not "fourth". after reading on in the the article, i see it's 4th density (out of 8), which happens to be the density jesus was on. good to know

man, sorry for bringing this noisy issue up on multiple social platforms in a single day, but i have spent all day struggling with encoding/compression settings for a video. the GIFs above have a really low frame rate and quality - the actual video moves much faster and more crisply and i was excited to share it! i spent all night working on it.

but it turns out that while i can render a crisp, HD 1080p .mp4 that looks great on my computer, the same video looks like absolute garbage on instagram, twitter, and facebook. it even looks terrible on Vimeo, where I uploaded a 200 MB 1080p version.

https://i.imgur.com/D7pxHMQ.png
https://i.imgur.com/uwvjyUN.png

The top image is a screenshot of what the real video looks like when I play it off of my desktop. the second is a screenshot of how the same 1080p video looks on Vimeo at top quality playback. it's crazy! i'm thinking the issue is that the different platforms probably use some form of auto-noise reduction in their compressors, so even if you upload the highest quality noise it just makes it even easier for it to noise-reduce. but i have nooooo fucking clue what i'm talking about. if anyone else knows and could school me i'd really appreciate it.

anyway, i have learned my lesson, which is not to bother working with noise (possibly a psychologically healthy thing anyway)!

Karl Malone, Friday, 15 December 2017 22:57 (six years ago) link

It seems like any sharing platform will fuck up your shit. Just upload your full rez MP4 somewhere and put it in a video tag on a web page and call it KarlTube.

.oO (silby), Friday, 15 December 2017 23:00 (six years ago) link

lol it's not a bad idea!

tbh i think it would be a really neat thing to try to instead use the extreme noise footage in a VR setting. i have no idea how hard it would be to do, though, and it might make people barf

Karl Malone, Friday, 15 December 2017 23:03 (six years ago) link

it would be a video compression issue, not a noise reduction thing. similar to your classic jpeg artifacting

tom scott is pretty cringey but this explanation may help

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6Rp-uo6HmI

micah, Saturday, 16 December 2017 02:13 (six years ago) link

i actually didn't mind him at all, i thought it was a good video! i know compression is the culprit, but the degradation is especially bad with noise content. i understand that when there are practically zero pixels on the screen that stay the same from frame to frame (as with HQ noize), it makes the compressor go bonkers.

there's a similar situation with color gradients, i think. it's barely detectable to the human eye, but if you create a really fine gradient that barely changes hue from pixel to pixel, and then gradually change it to a different gradient over time, there's often some noticeable artificating that happens regardless of the bitrate quality. but where gradient compression is often a bit noticeable but tolerable, with noise it's just completely unwatchable (imo), like everything that's interesting about the noise just gets obliterated.

thanks again for sharing that, micah!
