I'm soon going to need this thread's help to reconcile my need for good solid dress shoes with my compulsion to get shoes with lots of details on them. (Answer = wingtips, I think?)

(I always gravitate toward things like these, but I should really be getting something boring and black right now.)

they look very you, nabisco
― phil-two, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:30 (fifteen years ago) link

― phil-two, Friday, 8 August 2008 21:20 (fifteen years ago) link
maybe a bit impractical
― phil-two, Friday, 8 August 2008 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link
why impractical? if they were 4" heels you couldn't walk in, that is a different story, but, a pair of flashy sneakers that are stylish and well made..
i like them
― daria-g, Friday, 8 August 2008 21:43 (fifteen years ago) link
http://i34.tinypic.com/1xedg.jpg i would like black boots similar to the tall apc ones, and also the lace-ups. i need to find cheaper look-alikes.
― bell_labs, Saturday, 9 August 2008 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link
dear a.p.c. riding boots, please stop costing $700 why are you so cruel?
― bell_labs, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:15 (fifteen years ago) link
i like that you blame the boots. i usually blame myself for not being rich enough.
― sunny successor, Monday, 11 August 2008 17:44 (fifteen years ago) link
i doubt i'll ever be rich enough for $700 boots! gah i can't even imagine.
― bell_labs, Monday, 11 August 2008 17:52 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah me either.. you know, probably if i cut back on randomly buying fast fashion i could afford $700 boots..
― daria-g, Monday, 11 August 2008 18:54 (fifteen years ago) link
I just got these and they are awesome to look at and wicked comfortable, also the first pair of non boots I have bought in years (sorry, no pic only link)

Hot damn, Ed -- that place has some incredible boots!
― nabisco, Monday, 11 August 2008 22:11 (fifteen years ago) link
It is totally awesome, I could have bought half the store. I have visited there a few times over the last year and finally taken the plunge. I did not expect them to be so comfortable either. I would love a pair of the Spats boots but will have to wait a while before I can afford them.

Any tips on how to de-smell the slip-on Vans that I've worn every day this summer?

Have you tried anything yet?
― Laurel, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 13:23 (fifteen years ago) link
there is this stuff you can buy at some shoe stores that's in a bottle with a sort of brush at the top - you squeeze it out into the footbed or whatever the part of the shoe that your foot is on is called - it's a citrus thing - works really well! of course i can't find it online (i bought it at aldo for use in sandals but works with other shoes too obv).
maybe something like this: http://chasports.com/products/shoe_care/shoe_disinfectant.php also maybe this: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0NAH/is_7_33/ai_107637370

what do you guys think of these? they're clarks, which fit my feet well, and i need something comfortable but cute for walking in http://canada.zappos.com/images/739/7399422/6220-595455-d.jpg
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:00 (fifteen years ago) link
They don't speak to me but I think they're nicely styled, meaning I don't get any vibes of "Whose idea was THAT?" from them.
I really do love my new Clark's, they're amazingly light without being flimsy -- when I climb stairs in them it hardly feels like I'm wearing shoes!
― Laurel, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:13 (fifteen years ago) link
i <3 those rrrobyn
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:17 (fifteen years ago) link
Ya'll I bought some v. expensive shoes two weeks ago. So expensive I am embarrassed to link to them here. I justified this expenditure with the fact that I have pined after these shoes for over a year now--it was lucky I was even able to still find them! Also, I very rarely buy shoes--I've been wearing the same half-dozen black/brown/navy heels for years and years.
Please confess your extravagant shoe purchases here.
― quincie, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah i think they look ok in the pic but will look better on my feet + certain skirts/pants
wait what new clarks did you get laurel?
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link
what shoes are they, q?? you have to confess fully
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:19 (fifteen years ago) link
i don't think i've ever spend over $200 on shoes but i spend on avg $80-120 a pair (though often less b/c they are on sale). but i don't really buy shoes v often, or as often as i'd like...
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:20 (fifteen years ago) link
(You've seen them twice at least -- the orange sandals!)

i bought a pair of $300 hiking boots many years ago! does that count? i would say ski boots, but i never bought my own. that is why i have a 15 year old pair from highschool that my parents bought me.

holy whoa those are intense shoes, q!
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:24 (fifteen years ago) link
but def the kind of shoes that you have to buy designer b/c every knock-off just doesn't cut it at all
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:25 (fifteen years ago) link
They were well under 300, but geez! Fuck it I don't care I <3 them. Also I am a yuppie.
― quincie, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:25 (fifteen years ago) link
there is nothing wrong with that. i aspire to be able to spend that much on shoes.
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:26 (fifteen years ago) link
i got a pair of ankle-strap pucci ballet flats in 2002 for about $400. still have them, still glad i bought them.
― lauren, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:29 (fifteen years ago) link
Exciting! Wear them in good health etc! I have shoes that cost around that much but I didn't pay full price for them so I don't think it counts.
Dolce & Gabana sweetheart heels, $70 at Century 21, originally $400 or so. Probably my biggest shopping coup ever.
Italian high-heeled ankle boots (forget the maker), $20 at DSW, orig $200.
XP WHOAH, LAUREN

i used to get paid on commission, and it was really bad for my poor impulse control.
― lauren, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:34 (fifteen years ago) link
still, at least with things like those shoes or my huge orla kiely bag i have something to show for the money. the drinks, etc... not so much.
― lauren, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:35 (fifteen years ago) link
well, it could be worse, you could have been a college student with a credit card and poor impulse control like me from 1998-2002!
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:38 (fifteen years ago) link
hahaha! oh, i was that too!

some of us learn late in life, if at all.
q, those are great!!
shoes.. opening ceremony grey oxford flats abt $200 figuring in shipping.. i think before sale were $320 or so? but they fit really well and i'll wear them for a long time. i don't think i have any that cost more than that, though probably some would have if i hadn't bought them in europe early 2000 when the dollar was v strong, like i think my fave kenzo heels were over $400 but i got them for maybe around $125 during july sales.. and these basic black delman oxford flats i wear pretty much every other day, i know were abt $325 new but again, thx bluefly major sale.
― daria-g, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 17:11 (fifteen years ago) link
also i have terrible impulse control and apparently hate having money :)
I actually have a bit of the opposite problem (at least with clothes/shoes)--I have too much impulse control, meaning I'll see something I really really really like but then equivocate for forever until it is too late. Thus I end up with very little in my closet, and getting dressed becomes an exercise in frustration as opposed to a pleasure.
Another downside is when suddenly some sort of event pops up and I end up spending money on something I don't much like in desperation.
Note that I do not seem to have any trouble frittering away money on drinks, travel, and pricey groceries.
― quincie, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 17:27 (fifteen years ago) link
i do that too... i have been putting off shoe-buying for so long that i'm now really screwed. and now i'm about to need an entire new work wardrobe + shoes. not good.
rrrobyn i lovvvvve those clarks. i may have to investigate finding them here...
― tehresa, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 17:38 (fifteen years ago) link
and yeah there are at least 3 dresses in my closet right now that were purchased last min for events that i have only worn once. if i put the money for all those 3 together i could have bought some really awesome piece i bet.
― tehresa, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 17:39 (fifteen years ago) link
i have better with clothes & shoes consumption impulse control, and replaced it with a lack of food consumption impulse control </kathy>
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link
I think I am about to make a careful surrender to impulse and stimulate the economy by buying shoes from the same line as Ed:
