i used to like saint etienne but their connection to c86 (none of which i've heard) has always bewildered me.

and now bob stanley gone done this.

benrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 11:12 (seventeen years ago) link

It's the music of Bob Stanley's youth, that's the connection

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 11:18 (seventeen years ago) link

the connections of bob stanley to c86 are widespread and considerable

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 11:31 (seventeen years ago) link

i didn't know what c86 was when i was getting into saint etienne. they seemed au fait with dance music, which i had been led to believe indie kids weren't supposed to like. and even since then, weren't the c86 lot about "shambling"? not sure what shambing entails exactly, but it doesn't sound very etienne-like.

benrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 12:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm trying hard to imagine anyone who is more of an indie kid than Bob Stanley is/was!

Ha ha, but, re: St. Etienne and dance music, indie kids do grow up eventually

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 12:26 (seventeen years ago) link

has CD86 got all the C86 trax on it?

pisces (piscesx), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 14:40 (seventeen years ago) link

no.

e.g. Stump "Buffalo"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 14:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think it has any C86 tracks on it

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 14:42 (seventeen years ago) link

No Miaow! either. But a lot of the others.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 14:44 (seventeen years ago) link

My main problem with the C86 comp is that most of the really really awesome songs that get labeled as "C86" aren't actually on the C86 comp.

Somebody said it up there

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 14:46 (seventeen years ago) link

"Velocity Girl" is the same start track on both.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 14:51 (seventeen years ago) link

That's because "Velocity Girl" was (that incarnation of) Primal Scream's best track, nobody else on C86 was represented by their best tracks (they were mostly rubbish tracks that would have ended up stuck on the b-side of a 12")

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 14:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Did The Bodines record a better song than "Therese"?!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 15:02 (seventeen years ago) link

About half of the first Bodines album is about as good as "Therese".

"nobody else on C86 was represented by their best tracks "

So true. Though Buffalo is Stump's most likable track.

everything (everything), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 15:39 (seventeen years ago) link

The McCarthy track put me off them for far too long.

Venga (Venga), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 16:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Gasp! You dare diss the McCarthy track! For shame!

Bassment Jacks (Bimble...), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 19:48 (seventeen years ago) link

C'mon man, it's far from their best.

everything (everything), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

nicky wire was in heavenly? what did he do, write lyrics for "i fell in love last night"?

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 07:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm guessing Enrique means Heavenly records.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 07:54 (seventeen years ago) link

(er, I might deserve some kind of whoosh for completely missing the irony there. lif so I'm sorry, I'm not really awake.)

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 07:55 (seventeen years ago) link

haha

C86 - Still Doing It For Fun

OK so you steal Bachelor Pad titles for your crappy "celebration" but you try finding their music on CD. Ya bastids!

Dadaismus (Gives You The Big Reassure) (Dada), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyone going to any of this? I suppose it is as important not to go as it is for the original bands not to have reformed. But it might be quite good.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, I've just seen the price. As you were.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:27 (seventeen years ago) link

last.fm is the source of much Heavenly amusement / confusion.
http://www.last.fm/music/Heavenly

cathy was last seen on tv crashing cars with henry rollins. which was funny. juxtaposition.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, I've just seen the Magic Numbers are playing at it. As you were.

Dadaismus (Gives You The Big Reassure) (Dada), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Says a lot about today's music scene that C86 gets revived whereas C81 does not (or did the, cough, post-punk "revival" cover the latter?).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:31 (seventeen years ago) link

yes... it did! i think the post-punk revival was fairly well covered.

benrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:33 (seventeen years ago) link

But there wasn't a specific "sound" to C81, the music was all different

Dadaismus (Gives You The Big Reassure) (Dada), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:35 (seventeen years ago) link

And so much better.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Well yes, obviously, but a different thing altogether

Dadaismus (Gives You The Big Reassure) (Dada), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:38 (seventeen years ago) link

As different as the Brotherhood of Breath were to the Brotherhood of Man.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I stayed at Amelia Fletcher and the other feller from Heavenly's house once. They were very nice.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Did you see her in her knickers?

I ask that question as a public service, rather than for my own ends.

Don't ask on my account

Soz, no.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 10:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Not the same Nicky Wire who plays in the Manic Street Preachers who used to go on about how shit and unambitious and grey C86 was and how the only two important groups in the world were Public Enemy and Guns N' Roses, then.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 10:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, funny that isn't it?

The sun sets on twelve tons of pickled onions. A dynasty is dying... (Dada), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 10:37 (seventeen years ago) link

lex would have liked the early manics, i think -- wasn't all that stuff classic nme-bait? they were the ultimate interviews band.

benrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 10:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes but guitars ew.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 10:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Lex has better taste than that!
