Wait a minute, wait a minute. What other kind of brothels are there?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:08 (nineteen years ago) link

You've never been to a candy brothel?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:08 (nineteen years ago) link

"A Twizzler is $50, but I'll throw in a Jolly Rancher for $75."

Candy Pimp (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:10 (nineteen years ago) link

that still sounds like a sex brothel.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:11 (nineteen years ago) link

"Would you like the Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate?"

"Thanks, I'll take the South American import of same."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:11 (nineteen years ago) link

"Sugar frosting is extra."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, I've been hearing this song with a chorus that goes "let's get IT STARTED" and I know they have a song called "Let's Get Retarded" and when I sing THAT as the chorus it's a fucking dope jam. What's the deal? Is this one of those different-version-for-radio things? If so it fucking sucks.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, it's a radio edit. I don't blame them for it although I don't really approve (they do use the original "Let's Get Retarded" in the promos for "Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle" so it IS being played on national TV, ha).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Next hip hop act to go embarassing mode will be The Roots! Heard their new album a few days back: it is another Universal Music sellout long-player that isn't a patch on their first 2 records.

I await the New Roots posts with much relish!

herbalizer12 (herbalizer12), Saturday, 7 August 2004 15:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm way more embarassed for the Roots than for the Black Eyed Peas (who have actually figured out how to cross over rather than flop around lamely at the starting gate for over half a decade)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 7 August 2004 15:19 (nineteen years ago) link

the Roots could so wind up the Sonic Youth of rap

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 7 August 2004 15:19 (nineteen years ago) link

wait, so now Sonic Youth is embarrassing?

Joseph Pot (STINKORâ„¢), Saturday, 7 August 2004 16:20 (nineteen years ago) link

They are now.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:48 (nineteen years ago) link

oh, I disagree in a BIG way.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:49 (nineteen years ago) link

As soon as a Roots apprentice blows up (Jean Grae, maybe?) they might finally submit to some "godfather" status rather than making lukewarm attempts at commercial breakthrough (I don't think they've got another "You Got Me" in them).

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Regardless of whether or not they've ever "blown up" the Roots have actually released some really great material - which is something that cannot be said for the Black Eyed Peas.

djdee2005, Saturday, 7 August 2004 21:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Sez you.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 7 August 2004 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Are there some great black eyed peas songs i should be aware of?

djdee2005, Saturday, 7 August 2004 21:46 (nineteen years ago) link

"Joints And Jam"
"Clap Your Hands"
"Be Free"
"Movement"
"Be Free"
"Weekend"
"Hey Mama"
"Let's Get Retarded"

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 7 August 2004 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

What's the name of the really ugly one from BEP again? The one that looks like some unearthed dinosaur bones.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 7 August 2004 22:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Tanita Tikaram?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 7 August 2004 22:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Elephunk [A&M, 2003]
In which the unbelievably dull El Lay alt-rappers fabricate the brightest actual pop album of 2003. They remain unbelievable, but in pop that's just one more aesthetic nuance. Titles like "Let's Get Retarded," "Shut Up," and the guitar-driven "Anxiety" are what you'd hope except cleaner--tremendous ups every one. You can bet new member Fergie, a showbiz lifer who also put in a tour as JC Chasez's girlfriend, lured her pal Justin down for "Where Is the Love," an actual hit that actually called out "the CIA." Terrorists, the song claims. Rhymes with "The Bloods and the Crips and the KKK." A-

Hehehe (Vic), Sunday, 8 August 2004 11:50 (nineteen years ago) link

also aren't parts of their songs on this album in Tagalog? since i have a filipino friend who's really into them and sez they get all the pronunciation right, and that it's impressive. they're just a fun band with colorful videos, gosh does everyone here truly hate retarded-ness ? ("fun")

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 8 August 2004 11:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Um, seeing as one of their members is of Filipino descent, it's not all that shocking that they'd be able to get Tagalog correct.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 8 August 2004 11:55 (nineteen years ago) link

okay i didn't know. but its still cool nah ?

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 8 August 2004 11:57 (nineteen years ago) link

i mean, yes, that where is the love song was unforgivable on multiple levels, but i truly thought their silly aesthetic that's so good-natured and almost approaching the point of self-parody, would win some more admirers on ilm. "hey mama" is just such an irresistable - and comparatively unconventional - radio blessing, i don't understand how it could be overlooked, especially on here. also i don't think BEP fans care about things like "embarassment" - that's such a negative vibe man!!

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 8 August 2004 12:05 (nineteen years ago) link

neither do i as i typoed embarrassment etc

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 8 August 2004 12:06 (nineteen years ago) link

It's by BEP = ILM automatically hates it because it's a pop song that isn't by:

A) A British man
B) A woman under 24

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 8 August 2004 12:08 (nineteen years ago) link

okay so i just heard it again post-download, and must admit it's more enjoyable when one's drunk, and that i like Fergie's "la-la-la-la" part the best is a tiny part of the song, but it's still not anything as abominable as some would make it sound here. and the macy gray one was fine too.

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 8 August 2004 12:13 (nineteen years ago) link

That's not true Dan - "Where Is The Love" was a ILX hivemind hit!

I enjoy their new style but "Weekend" might be their peak - at any rate it's the great unifier in that *everybody* rushes to the floor for it. It's sort of the inverse/equivalent of Under Construction in that sense.

The last paragraph of Sterling's review is embarrassing.

jaymc, Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

rock critics be talking about girlfriends

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:16 (nineteen years ago) link

two reviews in the new Voice bring up girlfriends in the first sentence.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I suppose it is kind of news to readers that we occasionally have them.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:19 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah its an old review.

but hey.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:21 (nineteen years ago) link

now playing: "shut up". I still like that track a whole bunch. i mean this whole album -- "smells like funk" and "labor day, its a holiday", and "sexy" and gotdamn.

i don't understand why people don't like them. are they not "ghetto" enough for corny indie fuxx?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:23 (nineteen years ago) link

haha sterling in pazz'n'jop I equated Fever To Tell with a new girlfriend in one quote and Liz Phair with an ex in the other.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:30 (nineteen years ago) link

They're too corny for ghetto indie fuxx actually.

x-post

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:30 (nineteen years ago) link

for serious -- "isn't hip-hop supposed to be HARD?"!!! Its "supposed tto be" whatever the fuck it wants, punk. And if it wants to be about love and dancing and sill drawled lines about weekends and strange electro samples, then its supposed to be about that too!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:35 (nineteen years ago) link

I was gonna say, ask Whodini!

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:36 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm all for more sap in our lives.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:37 (nineteen years ago) link

also more bouncin bollywood samples!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:39 (nineteen years ago) link

rock critics be talking about girlfriends

Initially I thought it was meant that Sterling's girlfriend was Bonecrusher. This raised questions.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't stand them, I must say. "Hey Mama" is like dancehall but too clean or something.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:41 (nineteen years ago) link

so yeah kenan you want hard music you can identify with? go listen to skrewdriver or something

(/pre-emptive racial agitation)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:41 (nineteen years ago) link
