Salma Hayek is part-Lebanese? These Arabo-Latino women completely melt my brain.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:59 (twenty years ago) link

First time I heard 'Wuthering Heights' I pictured Kate Bush as some mad old bag.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Thursday, 4 March 2004 21:04 (twenty years ago) link

i thought the eurythmics had a dude singer the first time i heard "sweet dreams." sounded kinda like the dude singer from the pet shop boys, in fact.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 4 March 2004 21:05 (twenty years ago) link

When I first heard "Holiday," I thought Madonna was black. Hard to believe that it was possible to only hear a Madonna song, without an accompanying video, but for about a week it was.

Prediction: This thread will soon turn into a discussion of "what is white anyway?" Which is a good question.

I guess I'm helping it along, aren't I?

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Thursday, 4 March 2004 21:29 (twenty years ago) link

wow, I thought Rick Astley was a large black man as well.

q-lazzarus sounds like a DUDE MAN

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 4 March 2004 21:40 (twenty years ago) link

i thought the middle one out of Hanson was a girl AND i kinda fancied her/him. same goes for Brian Placebo. was pretty shocked to find out they were boys.

donny dorko, Friday, 5 March 2004 01:59 (twenty years ago) link

You can tell w/Brian now; he's got some fierce male pattern baldness going on.

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:59 (twenty years ago) link

q-lazzarus sounds like a DUDE MAN

and a white one at that! which the singer is not.
i thought the singer for cha cha cohen was a guy, but am only going on the word of my ex who claims it's a girl (never seen a pic).

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Friday, 5 March 2004 02:41 (twenty years ago) link

Tracey Chapman owns this thread.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 5 March 2004 05:25 (twenty years ago) link

Some examples of partially-Lebanese folks: Salma Hayek, Shakira, Shannon Elizabeth, Ralph Nader, Dick Dale, nickalicious, Frank Zappa...

Frank Zappa? Italian.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:50 (twenty years ago) link

Here's one more person who thought Rick Astley was a large black man

Joe Kay (feethurt), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:26 (twenty years ago) link

I thought Zappa was Jewish...

no opinion, Friday, 5 March 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

Shaddap ya face... I thought Sean Paul was black

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

sean paul is bi-racial (mulatto)!

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

Well so was Bob Marley but at least he looked like a black guy

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

Isn't Sean Paul from Toronto? Or are my friends lying bastards? Or are the just stupid?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 5 March 2004 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

whenever I hear Alison Moyet, it takes me a second to realize that's not a (probably very gay) man singing.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 5 March 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago) link

sean paul is jamaican. snow is from toronto.

(i might be wrong but it seems appropriate.)

when i first heard rage against the machine i thought it was fronted by a black woman

thought randy newman was black

I thought Batman was actually part bat. Now I know better.

dick grayson, Friday, 5 March 2004 21:10 (twenty years ago) link

The guy singing back-up on the Smithereens' "A Girl Like You". Very surprised that it wasn't a woman.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 5 March 2004 21:12 (twenty years ago) link

Casey Casem (Kasem?) and Danny Thomas (hence Marlo is at least 1/2) are also Lebanese.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 5 March 2004 21:14 (twenty years ago) link

Sophia: Jean is a lesbian.
Blanche: What's so bad about that?
Sophia: You're not surprised?
Blanche: Well I haven't known any personally but ain't Danny Thomas one?

last time I quote "The Golden Girls", I swear.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 5 March 2004 21:18 (twenty years ago) link

When I was younger I assumed a couple of those Todd Rundgren songs were sung by an black female alto.

Will (will), Friday, 5 March 2004 21:19 (twenty years ago) link

"when i first heard rage against the machine i thought it was fronted by a black woman"

hahahahahaha, classic!

I remember being shocked to discover that Billie Myers (of Kiss The Rain fame) was a woman.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Friday, 5 March 2004 21:36 (twenty years ago) link

Final, definitive word on Frank Zappa's heritage: "My ancestry is Sicilian, Greek, Arabic and French."

Oh, yeah: First few times I heard "Old Time Rock And Roll" I thought Bob Seger was black. Hard to believe there was ever a "first time" for hearing that song - one of the most tiresomely over-played ever. In fact, it's hard to recall a time when it wasn't associated with the nauseating sight of Tom Cruise dancing in his underwear. But I'm getting off the subject...

Myonga Von Bontee, Friday, 5 March 2004 21:58 (twenty years ago) link

that new girl in Shalamar, she's fine

I know most of this thread is going on voice, but the first time I saw Brother Ali at First Ave I was standing way in the back and thought "OK, burly bald white dude with formidable mic skills. Yay, Mpls has a Bubba Sparxxx!" Then I found out he's an albino African-American.

Holy shit I thought Savage Garden was Roxette too!

a couple years back someone played me a song from Fever by Kylie Minogue and I asked if it was something from the new Saint Etienne.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 5 March 2004 22:16 (twenty years ago) link

holy christ.
q-lazzarus totally sounds like a man, like i had no reason to think otherwise.

i thought the singer for Collette Carter was Susan Anway.

i thought the righteous brothers were black until just recently, when one of them died.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:11 (twenty years ago) link

Hell yeah, Nina Simone does reach into some pretty manly registers at times.

Some time in about 1988 I was under the impression the Pixies had one female singer with a very strange voice. I guess I only heard "Gigantic" and a bunch of Black Francis' shriekier moments before I saw a photo. Boy was my face red!

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:21 (twenty years ago) link

I was sure Attica Blues by Archie Shepp was sung by a woman. Well the back-up vox are ladies but I only found out the lead voice is a guy when I read the liner notes. I'm not the only one to think this, there's published reviews referencing the soulful lead lady vocals.

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:25 (twenty years ago) link

When I first heard "Numb," I thought Beth Gibbons was black because of a mix up with Morcheeba and her Billie Hollidayisms way back when. I thought Scott Herren was black.

Hanson totally own, though.

Leee the Whiney (Leee), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:27 (twenty years ago) link

I thought Scott Herren was black.
So did I, if only because reviews I read in passing for the first album talked so much about hip-hop, and my familiarity with the name Gil Scott Heron, who is not white.

I still don't know if Pat Place is a man or woman. The photos I've seen make him/her look very androgynous.

Also, I know Dave Brubeck is white, but I've never seen photos of the backing band. Are Paul Desmond and the rest of the group black or white?

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:33 (twenty years ago) link

Paul Desmond was white, dunno about the rest of the band

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:35 (twenty years ago) link

Also, I know Dave Brubeck is white, but I've never seen photos of the backing band. Are Paul Desmond and the rest of the group black or white?

Paul Desmond is white. If you're talking about Brubeck's group circa "Time Out", the bassist Eugene Wright is black and the drummer Joe Morello is white. The latter has the same last name as that Rage Against the Machine guitarist, don't know if they're related.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 6 March 2004 10:30 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, and here are my misconceptions:

When I first heard "Son of a Preacher Man", I thought Dusty Springfield was black.

Before I found out her name, I thought Tanita Tikaram was a man. And I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one.

I thought Company Flow was all-white, because they sounded like that.

When I first heard Slug, the Athmosphere rapper, featuring on an All Natural track, I thought he was black. Then I bought an Athmosphere LP, and changed my mind, I thought this dude has to be white. However, according to AMG he's mulatto.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 6 March 2004 10:38 (twenty years ago) link

First time I heard the Distillers, someone stuck a headphone against my ear and I thought Brodey Dalle was a man.

All Bunged Up. (Jake Proudlock), Saturday, 6 March 2004 13:14 (twenty years ago) link

I thought Gordon Gano was a woman, and not just b/c of his band's name.

Sym (shmuel), Saturday, 6 March 2004 13:30 (twenty years ago) link

one month passes...
A double-whammy: The first time I heard Lewis Taylor I thought he was some undiscovered rare groove afronaut genius from the late '70s.

Whoops.

Is mulatto the least attractive (nonslur) ethnic term
in common use?

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:30 (twenty years ago) link

Where is it commonly used (cuz I never hear it in the states)?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:31 (twenty years ago) link

When I first heard Creed I thought they were just a shitty local classic rock/sludge-bar band act that got its song played on the radio. Not long after that they went platinum.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:57 (twenty years ago) link

Of course my perception wasn't exactly wrong, except for the part about them being a local band.
