a thing that i'm finding funny is that a lot of the people who are praising eminem for "best political writing" for this cypher praised the eric garland game theory thing

I liked at the time (and still like) the first three Eminem albums - if only Encore was anywhere near as great and he'd stopped there. I'm not really interested in any of his post-comeback stuff.

he sounds like a middling slam poet and the portentous staging makes it sound even worse

agree w/ this

but it does sound better than most of his releases for the past 1.5 decades have been

dyl, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 22:28 (six years ago) link

he is soon releasing a duet with p!nk who just voiced her tentative support for trump earlier this week

dyl, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 22:44 (six years ago) link

lol

I did think the presentation of it (no beat, out front by himself) was weird and maybe not the best cuz as you say it was portentous, it gave it this unearned gravitas. Like, if he had just dropped all that in the context of how those ciphers usually are presented (for ex. w/Primo on the turntables and a bunch of other rappers all taking turns) it would have actually been way more dramatic, a real "oh shit!" moment

not the point. my point is, he risks nothing by doing this. it's not bold, it's trendhopping.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 11 October 2017 23:06 (six years ago) link

What would constitute a risk for a hugely successful pop star at risk? This is about as "risky" as anyone in his position can be, because at least he *takes* a position. I guess it could have been riskier if it was pro-Trump, and he was ant NFL protest and pro VA alt-right rally?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 23:47 (six years ago) link

He’s releasing a new album in November iirc and he said “fuck you” to half of his fanbase. How is that not a risk, yeah he’s got enough money to care but it’s almost a given it will affect sales negatively.

i expect there will be some people who would ordinarily never bother checking out an eminem album in 2017, myself included, who will at least give the album a cursory listen/stream just to see if he delves further in the direction hinted by this promo appearance. not to say that that would necessarily push the needle significantly, but merely to point out that commercial risk was far from not the only possibility to consider when weighing the decision to do this. given the proximity to his forthcoming album release (it's likely coming out in about a month) i would guess that his label felt the ~buzz~ would be beneficial.

i don't expect a large sales decline whatsoever.

i'm kinda kidding about the trump supporter part. just like she's probably kidding about "So I’m going for a rap Grammy, and I’d like to take you along with me."

(i would die laughing if they actually got nominated for said grammy)

Spottie, Friday, 10 November 2017 19:08 (six years ago) link

such a bizarre release. preemptively noting in the verses that it might(/will) get completely eviscerated doesn't mean it's any less deserving of such. it just... doesn't really go anywhere and is already pretty well-trodden territory for him thematically. a meandering mess.

beyoncé was an appropriate choice for the chorus given the untouchable persona she embodies in her media image. but unlike her own recent work that provides just enough of a glimpse to feel personal and soul-bearing, on this she still seems very much behind the barrier, and the simplistic tune doesn't give her voice enough room to redeem it. (on that note: the industry needs to acknowledge that it is no longer 2011 and no one wants rap music packaged with skylar grey choruses. they literally are currently trying, and failing, to make that happen with macklemore too.)
