i like the anna of the north album, nothing too special but some solid dreamy synthpop

I know pop music is littered with repeating motifs but that Anna of the North track is too close to Bette Davis Eyes for comfort.

Something about the bassline's particular style of octave jumping brings to mind this fantastic 80s synthpop track though:

For those compiling your year-end lists, this playlist includes all the available tracks on this thread, organized roughly chronologically in order of mention:

This is over a year old but didn't see any mention of it in the 2016 thread. This is my favorite of the live versions on Youtube (which I think are better than the studio version). So beautiful!

two years pass...

After loving so much of the first two Lucky Soul albums (and wishing I'd nominated The Great Unwanted for the 00s poll), I discovered that they released a third in 2017 called Hard Lines, and it's got a totally different and I think Shambhala-worthy sound totally unlike their "miserablist ersatz Motown" vibe from before, instead embracing disco, pop and, er, soul. I always thought they should have been huge and I can't imagine this sharp turn away from the twee-ish aesthetic suited their fans all that well, but there are some really great songs on here and the huge sonic shift is convincing and laudable. I hope they stick around.
