i don't usually get that stoked about live concerts even for bands i love but this is one of the albums where i need to see them touring this material
― flopson, Saturday, 7 October 2017 21:17 (six years ago) link
largely because i need a socially acceptable outlet to singalong to some of these choruses in public
is this band/album too normie for the rest of the 1975 cru?
― k3vin k., Friday, 13 October 2017 23:40 (six years ago) link
tim f is a fan of the devil and god iirc

i have a new favorite every night. this album gives and gives. listening to new music from this band (my favorite in high school/early college 10 years ago) when it's THIS GOOD fills me with a unique sort of nostalgia. or a sense of completeness/closure, idk

― k3vin k., Sunday, 15 October 2017 04:39 (six years ago) link

― Spottie, Sunday, 15 October 2017 04:43 (six years ago) link
first time I listened to the intro to SF I was afraid Jesse had gone full Tom Delonge
― botex (rip van wanko), Sunday, 15 October 2017 20:53 (six years ago) link
and then the first few strums of Can't Get Out had me thinking he'd gone full Jeff Mangum

jesse is an obsessive NMH fan, if you heard something it's quite possibly intentional

i just realized that the reason "i am a nightmare" is so awesome is because it's basically a gaslight anthem song
― k3vin k., Thursday, 19 October 2017 01:19 (six years ago) link
The show was amazing tonight but two notes 1) Jessie clearly hates deja ententu only played two songs from it and before sic transit he sarcastically said “the hit song” 2) I think he’s super depressed? I mean the new material is bleak af he’s playing lots of daisy not really engaging with the audience lots of dark imagery of soldiers in the background. But great show. But I hope he’s okay.
― Mordy, Thursday, 19 October 2017 03:09 (six years ago) link
honestly that was one of my first thoughts when I first heard the new album
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 19 October 2017 08:59 (six years ago) link
he’s playing lots of daisy
is this a euphemism for.. drugs?

the album
― k3vin k., Friday, 20 October 2017 01:25 (six years ago) link

starting my emo phase late at 26
― flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 17:09 (six years ago) link
haha i just listened to YFW -> DE -> 2006 all in succession on a car ride last night and it brought be straight back to high school, screaming out all the lyrics in the car alone. if you like the new album i'd start with devil and god and then work backwards to see how much you can stomach. the old stuff is good for what it is (music for kids) but it's not something i can really imagine listening to all the time anymore
this new album has pretty much cemented brand new as one of my all-time favorite bands tho, or at least made me a little more willing to say that in public lol
― k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 17:33 (six years ago) link
2006 demos, i mean
JUST JEALOUS CAUSE WERE YOUNG AND IN LOVE

I did this too and I recommend it highly

i've been thinking about what my brand new POX would be and i'm not ready for the full list yet, but after listening to the old stuff last night (and TDAG a couple of times last week) i think these are probably safe

Kev and Flopson you missed out on the emo poll.
― Spottie, Saturday, 21 October 2017 19:58 (six years ago) link
(the rest will be from TDAG and on)
xp spottie i really never dove deep enough into enough back in the day to have a truly informed vote, i was more into rap at that point in my life
― k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:03 (six years ago) link
Yah I was heavy into both in my early-mid 20s
― Spottie, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:13 (six years ago) link
i listened to 3 emo albums in my life at present, including this one lol
― flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:20 (six years ago) link
i loved atdi in hs but ito rock shit i was p much excluse the 'garage' scene (broadly defined) in my early twenties, no regrets as i had the time of my life playing and going to shows twice a week. the only ppl i knew into emo then were more about the mathy/post-hardcore end of it; i think i wasn't fully aware of how fully good emo bangs as conventional rock music
― flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:37 (six years ago) link
i havent listened to much "emo" music in like a decade, so maybe the scene itself has changed, but if science fiction is seen as an emo album it probably has more to do with the band's historic association with that scene than it does with the actual music
― k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:37 (six years ago) link
i mean this is just a rock album
― k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:38 (six years ago) link
it's post-emo
― flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:46 (six years ago) link
chorus of same logic is straight emo imo
― flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:47 (six years ago) link
yeah there's some touches for sure
― k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:51 (six years ago) link
another note from the show - lacey played 'soco amaretto lime' but changed the lyrics from "you're just jealous cause were young and in love" to "i'm just jealous cause you're young and in love"
― Mordy, Saturday, 21 October 2017 23:01 (six years ago) link
the enunciation of the "boy we gave you every opportunity" part is super emo

yeah i noticed this from a youtube recently, i like the change. also on a mostly unrelated note he sings "i am paid to make you boys panic while i sing" in "spin light" these days -- i get the feeling he realizes some of his earlier lyrics were kind of, to use a contemporary term, a little problematic
― k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 23:43 (six years ago) link
it was just striking to me along w/ the other stuff that it's a much darker more pessimistic gloomy take
― Mordy, Saturday, 21 October 2017 23:45 (six years ago) link
yeah no idea what kind of place jesse is in but he's always been outwardly pretty troubled
― k3vin k., Sunday, 22 October 2017 00:07 (six years ago) link
the old stuff is good for what it is (music for kids) but it's not something i can really imagine listening to all the time anymore
fwiw i understand why you and presumably lacey feel this way but i think deja entendu continues to contain some of their most direct, affecting + memorable work. but i never think that "music for kids" is necessarily a limitation on popular music (i still listen to pet sounds too)
― Mordy, Sunday, 22 October 2017 00:07 (six years ago) link
there were signs all over the venue when you entered that said that there would be no crowd surfing at the show and anyone who crowd surfed would get ejected. when the concert started the band played the first few songs behind a gate/fence that spanned the entire length of the stage like they were in jail. i was thinking "oh my god he is so freaked out about the audience he is playing behind a gate now" but it lifted after the first few songs i felt whew
― Mordy, Sunday, 22 October 2017 00:10 (six years ago) link
sort of feel like if i were a band of brand new's popularity i'd be performing behind something bulletproof
