flopson, Saturday, 7 October 2017 01:03 (six years ago) link

I had trouble listening to it one time through, said this on twitter but despite it being music for ppl w ostensibly short attention spans I felt like my attention span was even shorter

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 7 October 2017 03:34 (six years ago) link

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie getting clowned worldwide for beating up Lil' B confirms his status as one of the lamest rappers in history

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 24 October 2017 18:54 (six years ago) link

Trippie redd tape was mega underwhelming imo

Not gonna write him off just felt rushed

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 24 October 2017 19:44 (six years ago) link

really? i didn't think it was as good as the first one, but it wasn't that big a drop-off

bodak horseman (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 24 October 2017 20:28 (six years ago) link

i felt like the songwriting was a lot more hurried

but it also might have been unfairly contrasting w/ my new fav rapper 03 greedo whose melodic choices tend to make these younger kids seem like they're finger painting

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 24 October 2017 20:39 (six years ago) link

a little late but i'm a big fan of this beat:

Am I the only one who thinks the Offset / 21 Savage / Metro Boomin record is absolutely amazing? I mean, Culture is my favorite rap-record of the year, so I was predisposed to like it, but it's really really great, no?

The new Lil Wop mixtape is wild

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3gsv3PMNPU

Evan R, Friday, 1 December 2017 15:03 (six years ago) link

i find him unlistenable. im convinced hed be nowhere near as famous if his name wasnt 'lil wop' in the era of GUCCI MANE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ARTIST WHO HAS EVER LIVED

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 1 December 2017 18:35 (six years ago) link

Nah, his Gucci fandom is the least interesting thing about him. He gives lip service to Gucci, but his sound owes more to Keef. Both of those things are kinda boring on their own, but I love the tape's mashup of slasher films and sugary breakfast cereal.

Also helps that he uses his own stable of producers, rather than just tapping the same old 1017 standbys. Gucci's never made a tape that sounds anything like this

Evan R, Friday, 1 December 2017 18:42 (six years ago) link

i dunno, most of his records so far i find aggressively unlikeable

lets talk about how this is the best chief keef record of the year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cD3LvBIOsKI

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:53 (six years ago) link

I haven't kept up with them all but that whole tape sounds like his best start-to-finish project in years to me. The mix is interesting... all these songs, like "Less Speed," that might have been played for maximum volume a few years ago, sound slightly cushioned, like it was mastered with headphones in mind

Evan R, Friday, 1 December 2017 21:08 (six years ago) link

it doesn't feel like his 'best project in years' to me in the sense that his catalog has always sort of exceeded the bounds of his projects, and capturing just one project feels like you're only look at one facet of what he does--like, to say this best represents him when there's zero melodic records on it feels wrong. I will say that this, like Thot Breaker, feels like one of his best-packaged efforts, and is definitely more well sequenced than the unfortunate Bang 3 releases, which were kind of botched even though the have some classic records on them (ie "laurel canyon")
