It *was* on Spotify until recently what it was replaced by "the best of Paul Draper" lol
this is too much. just looked it's like some kind of acoustic set that took the place of the real album.

impossible this, mainly because of how the tracks are broken up. possibly Anti Everything though. christ it's amazing this record.

This is between either 'Shotgun' and 'Being a Girl', but I haven't listened to this for years.

(Interlude) and (Part Two) are notation errors not tracks, so I guess the haters know what to vote for

For my part, I shall be voting for Cancer
― imago, Thursday, 5 October 2017 07:25 (six years ago) link
This gets more acclaim than the debut these days btw; history has a funny way of rectifying things. Draper himself made a huge fuss over this record's 20-year anniversary having done nothing for the debut, in recognition of this being the one people still go on about. I guess the debut was for all its (considerable) charms just another Britpop record, whereas this is still unlike anything ever
― imago, Thursday, 5 October 2017 07:29 (six years ago) link
I've always considered Six to be their masterpiece but these days I find myself a bit more drawn to Attack Of the Grey Lantern. They're both great.
I don't think Little Kix is the disaster many make it out to be either, there's great songs on that one too, although it's certainly less coherent and special & there's certainly some mediocre stuff on there. I think the five 'even' tracks are the very good-to-great Little Kix tracks, the six 'odd' tracks I care less for.
Kleptomania, the box set they made out of what would have been the fourth album, is also overall very good IMO. I think it would have been a strong one if they'd finished production on it. 'Keep Telling Myself' in particular is excellent.
Mansun always had very, very good B-sides, they made it worth to collect their singles. The Kleptomania box set includes a B-sides album but I think there's some highlights missing there - I think it's actually possible to compile their best album out of b-sides, but that Kleptomania disc just isn't it.
Anyway, as for Six, it's got to be Being A Girl, but it's closely followed by several other tracks: Cancer, title track, Negative and of course Legacy.

― imago, Thursday, 5 October 2017 08:59 (six years ago) link
Finding it very hard to select just one. Many years ago it would have been Legacy, but now I'm not so sure.
Draper put in a very awkward, David Brent-like performance in Glasgow a few weeks ago, but it was worth it to hear I Can Only Disappoint U live. Little Kix may be a bit rubbish but I'd say it still gave them their best ever song.
― PaulTMA, Thursday, 5 October 2017 11:11 (six years ago) link
Decided to go for Shotgun in the end. Probably the most defining song of the album, for me

This has been the case since at least the very early '00s.

seriously give all 8 minutes of 'being a girl' (full version, not single version) a listen, or 'shotgun', or 'cancer', or 'television', or (lol) 'fall out', and then make that comparison with a straight face

― ciderpress, Thursday, 5 October 2017 17:47 (six years ago) link
wtf:
The US release of Six restructured the track listing considerably at the behest of Epic Records. The chapters and interlude were removed and the running order was rearranged with "Legacy" and "Shotgun" swapped. More significant was the omission of "Inverse Midas" and "Witness to a Murder (Part Two)" both of which were composed by Dominic Chad. The full eight-minute recording of the title track is substituted for the Arthur Baker re-recording. Small edits appear throughout the remaining track listing: the opening guitar from "Legacy", the feedback from the opening of "Negative" and the removal of silence from the end of "Cancer".1. "Six (Baker Mix)" 3:562. "Negative" 4:163. "Legacy" 6:194. "Anti Everything" 2:255. "Fall Out" 3:476. "Serotonin" 2:337. "Cancer" 9:168. "Television" 8:219. "Special / Blown It (Delete as Appropriate)" 5:1810. "Shotgun" 6:2711. "Being a Girl" 8:00

is this some masterpiece that i never knew about? to be fair to me, i'm a Yank and had the shitty US version of this album. i played the UK version on YouTube and it basically blew my mind. beyond what i even remotely remember.

― Bee OK, Saturday, 7 October 2017 02:08 (six years ago) link
i was just really impressed with all the directions this album went in.
― Bee OK, Saturday, 7 October 2017 02:09 (six years ago) link
I haven't listened to the US version, but it looks mangled. The single version of the title track doesn't do much to declare the ambition of the album. Anti Everything is only half of a song without Inverse Midas. Legacy should be climactic, not placed up front.
― jmm, Saturday, 7 October 2017 02:19 (six years ago) link
I wonder if the US version was meant to make it seem less proggy. It opens with three of the singles.
― jmm, Saturday, 7 October 2017 02:35 (six years ago) link
Draper says there's a 5.1 mix and such coming for the 20th anniversary next year.
― piscesx, Saturday, 7 October 2017 02:42 (six years ago) link
I have never heard the US version of the album, but having heard the single version of 'Six' and looking at the tracklisting, I can imagine it completely ruins the whole experience. 'Legacy' into 'Anti Everything' just feels utterly wrong and 'Shotgun' as the penultimate track?

It did actually get some good reviews in the UK press but one or two publications savaged it - I remember Q Magazine being particularly hard on it.

I have a bit of a fascination with this late '90s post-Britpop period of UK guitar music - where everyone discovered Pro Tools and decided to make audacious records.

― imago, Saturday, 7 October 2017 14:06 (six years ago) link
Yes, we did! I've forgotten where, though... but there was a lot of great stuff in the late '90s from bands/artists who genuinely were trying to move things forward in that genre.

Both the Manics This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours and Blur's 13 are attempts at 'doing an OK Computer', on their own terms. Both of them would deny this, of course.

Would it be right to say this record is a lot more *fun* than its reputation? For all its indulgences, it's full of amazing hooks and silly hummable bits. Even with a song called "Cancer", it's not as ponderous as, say, Dog Man Star.
