oops

I've been in the habit of listening to those 2013-14 Kim Deal singles as a full album, if this ends up as good as that I'll be thrilled.

geoffreyess, Sunday, 1 October 2017 14:55 (six years ago) link

Somehow I completely missed that Kim Deal has released 6 singles in the last 5 years!

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 1 October 2017 16:00 (six years ago) link

Sorry, 5, she just guested on a single by another band

so so so good. i love the Breeders. if anyone is ever sad about what happened to the Pixies they just need to check out the Breeders, they are still solid.

Also they absolutely smoke live

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 3 October 2017 14:38 (six years ago) link

Played Title TK yesterday for the first time in a long while, had almost forgotten how great it is. Also my LP is worth some money I saw as I checked discogs :)
Looking forward to a new album (&tour!).

This is better than anything Frank Black has farted out in the last 10 years.

Monster fatberg (Phil D.), Tuesday, 3 October 2017 16:41 (six years ago) link

Phantastic. They sound exactly like 25 years ago.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 3 October 2017 16:46 (six years ago) link

Nah, 21st century Breeders >> 20th century Breeders. Title TK is their best album, although Pod/Safari is a close second for me. Kim's writing and delivery gets better and looser every year.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Wednesday, 4 October 2017 02:38 (six years ago) link

Title TK is their best album

How cute.

Wait in the Car is now my default alarm clock sound.

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 4 October 2017 04:11 (six years ago) link

Holy shit!! Those B-sides!!:

"Wait In the Car" will be released on three different seven-inch records, all limited to 1,500 copies. The first will be available on the Breeders' upcoming tour dates, starting October 15th. That record will be pressed on orange vinyl and feature a cover of Amon Düül II's "Archangel's Thunderbird," recorded with Steve Albini in Chicago. The second seven-inch will be available at select independent record stores starting October 27th. Pressed on yellow vinyl, that version will feature a cover of Devo's "Gates of Steel" on the B side. A release date for the third seven-inch has yet to be announced, though it's expected to arrive later this year, will be pressed on red vinyl and feature Deal's cover of Michael Nesmith's "Joanne."

xp don't try to tell me the bloated, overproduced Last Splash is better than TK

attention vampire (MatthewK), Wednesday, 4 October 2017 06:17 (six years ago) link

wait, they're back to the O.G. lineup?!

alpine static, Wednesday, 4 October 2017 07:37 (six years ago) link

sorry, i guess i don't mean O.G., i mean what i would consider their "classic" lineup (Deal/Deal/Wiggs/MacPherson)

alpine static, Wednesday, 4 October 2017 07:40 (six years ago) link

They reformed that lineup for the 20th anniversary of Last Splash

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 16:09 (six years ago) link

Saw them open for Arcade Fire a couple of weeks ago, they were in good silly spirits (if a bit subdued). Ended with "Gigantic."

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 16:47 (six years ago) link

They sold out their London show a few weeks ago in about 5 minutes, but I got lucky and one of my friends managed to obtain 2 free tickets and asked me if I wanted to go with him, which of course I did. Was absolutely great.

Uh, yes please:

Today, the Breeders announce details of their long-awaited fifth album. Entitled All Nerve, and featuring recent single ‘Wait in the Car’, the group’s first record in a decade will be released on March 2, 2018. All Nerve’s title track is now available to hear below.

‘ALL NERVE’ - http://bit.ly/2CViqyq

All Nerve reunites band members Kim and Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson – the line-up behind the iconic and platinum-selling record, Last Splash. The quartet returned to the stage in 2013 to celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary and have been quietly working on new material since then. Recording took place at Candyland, Dayton, Kentucky, with Mike Montgomery; Electrical Audio, Chicago, with Steve Albini and Greg Norman; and with Tom Rastikis at Fernwood Studios, Dayton, Ohio. Artwork was conceived by Chris Bigg, who has worked with the Breeders since their first album, Pod.

All Nerve will be released on March 2nd on CD, standard edition black vinyl LP, limited alternate sleeve/orange vinyl (independent stores only) and digitally. 4AD Store customers also have the opportunity to bundle their LP album pre-order with the third iteration in the ‘Wait in the Car’ 7” single series, while stocks last. This limited red vinyl single features a cover of Mike Nesmith’s ‘Joanne’. For more information head to 4ad.com/store

To coincide with All Nerve and following a successful club tour late last year, the Breeders will tour North America and Europe throughout the Spring and Summer. Tickets go on sale this Friday. Visit thebreedersmusic.com for further details.

As posted above, "Walking With The Killer" was the absolute highlight of the show I saw a couple months ago. I love Kim's solo (demo?) version.... very intrigued by the album release.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 9 January 2018 21:49 (six years ago) link

as I noted on the other thread, the real draw for me here is what I assume is a cover of

Amon Duul II - "Archangels Thunderbird"

Those Kim Deal 7" singles from 2014 are great and make a nice album of sorts (incl. "Walking With a Killer"). I bought 3-4 of the vinyl releases but you can get the whole lot from iTunes I think, and Amazon if you don't want DRM. No lossless anywhere I could find though.
"Biker Gone" with Kim, Kelley and Britt Walford is effectively a Breeders song (and superb) -

They played it live on last year's tour and it was one of the highlights.

nine months pass...

Wow - decent mini reviews but my ranking would go Pod = TK > Nerve > Splash > Battles. Pacer would be equal to Nerve if we're including it.

songs are great but the albini aesthetic rarely does it for me, i'd have gone for last splash. but i'll take it

30 years old today!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 29 May 2020 13:47 (three years ago) link

the thing about pod vs. last splash is that they're both perfect

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 29 May 2020 14:16 (three years ago) link

albini's method of recording very tight bands in a straight up way that emphasized dynamics which would somehow make them sound more mysterious and strange = still classic i think, despite the uneven mastering (or at least i think that must be why "happiness" is 30x louder than the rest of the record)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 29 May 2020 14:25 (three years ago) link

yeah I think there is something a little off about the mastering of Pod, at least on the CD version, would be interesting to hear that album on vinyl and see if it's any different. I think the Albini recording works otherwise

just had a quick look on slsk and found some FLACs purporting to be ripped from the original LP so will see

Colonel Poo, Friday, 29 May 2020 14:37 (three years ago) link

I can listen to "Lime House" on repeat for an hour. Easily Deal's best song ever. POD is indeed a far better album than LAST SPLASH, and I love how she returned to Albini
after the bloat of Gil Norton

beamish13, Friday, 29 May 2020 18:21 (three years ago) link

Albini's Rid of Me (and some other) production being discussed on PJ Harveythread. Back then I listened to alt-rock on casettes, via whatever headphones, didn't worry about production.

If I'm going to do this I'm going to listen to the demo version anyways thx for watching my TEDTalk

weekly shopper helper (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 29 May 2020 21:43 (three years ago) link

I listened to the vinyl rip of Pod earlier, Happiness Is A Warm Gun was still a little louder than the tracks around it but it sounded great although I don't think it was significantly different to the CD, not that I A/B'd it or anything. It did seem to be actually a vinyl rip, there were a couple of tiny pops during Metal Man which has a lot of quiet parts.

It is a great album and it took me back to my teens when I bought it and I could picture my bedroom at my mum's house

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 30 May 2020 00:09 (three years ago) link

Used to play my Pod tape in mom's minivan, hope she enjoyed it. The Breeders were so formative for me I didn't even know the (post-Beatlemania) Beatles yet.

Pod is so good. One of the top 10 albums of the 1990s.
