Blech.
My least fave Stones ballad. Maybe even my least fave Stones song.

Yeah, I agree about Mick's reggae affectations being gross, and I also love 'Fool to Cry' ... that, 'Hand of Fate' and 'Memory Motel' are my favourites from that record, although I also enjoy 'Hot Stuff' and 'Melody' when I'm in the mood for 'em.

And the one thing I can really say in favour of this era is that they were pretty good with the ballads. "Winter," as I've said multiple times here, I absolutely love, and "Coming Down Again," "Till the Next Goodbye" and "Memory Motel" are pretty enough (I'm all "Angie"'d out, though).

I was waaaayy too young to get sick of "Fool to Cry" on the radio, so it sounds fresh.

oh hell no, this is an incredible jam. it sounds like a cosmic gospel song field recording, it's such a spooky song. I feel like Tom Waits' entire latter period career is him trying to recapture what they tossed off here.

Johnny Winter did a good version of "Silver Train", might be a bit groovier than the Stones.

i'm hearing "hand of fate" right now.. it's a great riff and mick sounds fabulous but the production sounds really off to me. too light and airy or something, not violent enough.― brimstead, Friday, 29 September 2017 01:42 (three days ago) Permalink

this is one of those things that bothers me. "too light and airy"? what were you looking for? if you wanted that dirt-sound of "ventilator blues" or "street fighting man" then i'm all for it. but if you're trying to compare the track to "brown sugar" or something similar then i get off the bus. one of those bands where the production quality always came as a bonus to the songs.

Kinda how I look for a tune in 'I Just Wanna See His Face' ... or any kind of reason for it to exist more than "hey, we're in LA now and we still have't got quite enough to fill four sides..."

The fact that The Blind Boys of Alabama do a pretty great version of 'I Just Wanna See His Face' indicates that there is a 'tune' there - but you know, sometimes recordings are about something other than the tune. The atmosphere on the Stones' version - a fuggy séance, a druggy act of devotion with a nice bit of irreligious ambiguity - is unique and compelling. It's one of the greatest things they ever did.

No, 'Satisfaction' is one of the greatest things they've ever done, by comparison 'I Just Wanna See His Face' is a buried little curio and nothing more.

he talks about it a bit in his bio ("Under a Hoodoo Moon"). Of course he has zero respect or interest in the Stones, thinks they're basically poseurs/weak imitation etc. altho he thinks Keith is allright (and Keith plays on one or two tracks on "The Sun, Moon and Herbs", which is recorded around the same time). This lack of respect is reciprocated, apparently, and Rebbenack is pissed that he and his percussionist/right-hand man Diddimus are not appropriately credited on the album (Diddimus is credited as "Amyl Nitrate", which pissed them both off).
― Οὖτις, Monday, 2 October 2017 16:27 (six years ago) link
Which tracks are they on?
― Josefa, Monday, 2 October 2017 16:38 (six years ago) link
Dr. John is on "I Just Want to See His Face" (uncredited - altho this has been publicly verified later by Jimmy Miller + others) and credited w/backing vocals on "Let it Loose", but claims he is on a bunch of other stuff uncredited. Diddimus was credited as "Richard Washington" for marimba on "Sweet Black Angel" but Dr. John claims he's on a bunch of other songs too.
― Οὖτις, Monday, 2 October 2017 16:47 (six years ago) link
I think the "Amyl Nitrate" credit appears instead of "Richard Washington" in the original liner notes. I remember this credit appearing in my CD copy of this album when I got it in the 90s, cuz it's such a weird credit.
Wow, that's crazy. Had no idea Dr. John was actually on the Dr. John-like track

missed this poll. definitely my least 3 favorites of theirs until the post Tattoo You 80s. i might have been the weirdo that would've given IORAR a 5th vote (MAYBE). i don't care for Mick's reggae affectations (though i dont know they're anymore "problematic" than his r&b ham) but i think "Luxury" is kind of a jam. the title track's sound and playing are pitch perfect for the time/ place/ drugs, then you have weird shit like "Fingerprint File", and a decent Van Morrison rip off ("Til the Next Time"). fuck it i even like the Temptations cover. i turn that shit up every time it comes on the radio. better filler and overall i think i prefer glammier sound to GHS & B&B. both of those def have some dope moments, but the stuff i don't like on them is really hard to slog through.
but hey i'm also the guy who sometimes thinks the second side of Tattoo You is one of the better things they did.

Goat's Head is where I get off the Stones bus, but even then I think there's some filler on it. The sequencing is a joke too - 'Coming Down Again' third on side 1??? I worked up an alternate version a couple months ago for listening purposes:
1. 100 Years Ago (I think by Goats they were stuck in the rut of having a typical 'stones' song open an album, and 'Mr.D' always felt really forced, whereas '100 Years Ago' sounds much more interesting/unexpected in that slot)2. Dancing In The Light (the old bootleg instrumental version, not the Exile deluxe one. There's a definite lack of Keith on Goat's and this track helps to alleviate that)3. Heartbreaker4. Angie5. Tops (released on Tattoo You but recorded in 72. The vocals weren't done until 79/80 though, but it's one of my favourite Stones songs so I cheated and used the Tattoo version here. The opening chord blends with the final chord in Angie perfectly)6. Separately (Taylor/Keith/Hopkins instrumental ballad done during the Exile sessions)7. Waiting On A Friend (the 73 version with rough vocals and no sax)8. Criss-Cross Mind (Goat's outtake, more uptempo than 'Can You Hear The Music')9. Winter10. Leather Jacket ('Silver Train' was from the Stargroves sessions in 1970, as was this, so pilfering from a few years back didn't seem out of place. The instrumentation fits in with the Goat's Head sound and it gives Taylor some songwriting credit)11. I Ain't Signifying (the bootleg version with 72 era Mick vocals, not the Exile Deluxe version. I could've used 'Hide Your Love' but I like this better, esp. for the "have you ever had the feeling that you've been here before?" line)12. Coming Down Again (the only way to end things imo)
