Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Saturday, 30 September 2017 00:48 (six years ago) link

He lost me completely

Good for him that his finally getting mainstream feats and recognition but I don’t think it’ll last too long if he doesn’t bring back the awesomeness of his previous albums.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 30 September 2017 01:04 (six years ago) link

he's probably at his lowest ebb of mainstream recognition right now...

J0rdan S., Friday, 27 October 2017 19:39 (six years ago) link

this thread's reaction to it was entirely predictable but also completely incorrect

J0rdan S., Friday, 27 October 2017 19:41 (six years ago) link

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/miguel-on-politics-adelanto-new-album-war-and-leisure-w509919

For Miguel, participating in the October 20th press conference and concert (the #SchoolsNotPrisons concert at the Adelanto Stadium baseball field) is part of a personal, slowly evolving engagement with the political moment, inspired by such musical heroes as Prince, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. "They all cared. It's a human thing," says Miguel. "They all pushed the boundaries in their own way. They all challenged us to look at things a different way. I saw that from the artists I love, and I decided I want to do that. To be an artist is to deal with what's happening in your time."

His upcoming fourth album, War & Leisure, is still overwhelmingly upbeat and concerned with the personal and romantic, but it also contains "Now," a questioning socially conscious ballad in the spirit of Lauryn Hill and Sam Cooke. Accompanied by layers of guitar and heavenly, electronic sounds, Miguel sings:

"CEO of the free world now/Build your walls up high and wide ... /Should we teach our children hatred?/Chase the innocent and shoot them down? ... /Is that the look of freedom, now?/Is that the sound of freedom?"
Last November, at age 31, the Grammy-winning soul artist voted in his first presidential election. "Politics, I didn't have a personal interest," Miguel admits. "I didn't really care. What is my one vote? That was my attitude."

He liked President Obama, but didn't feel drawn to the political process until last year's rise of Sen. Bernie Sanders during the Democratic primaries. "Watching him made me interested," said Miguel. "It was also our peers, our conversations, and seeing people really get behind him who shared similar values." Even after Sanders lost the nomination, Miguel stayed engaged through the general election.

After voting, he spent election night with his fiancée at an arcade and played air hockey as the TVs slowly revealed the results, state by state. "The shit started rolling in," remembers Miguel, who tried to stay positive until the results were clear. "With the election going in a direction way unexpected, I couldn't take my eyes off it. I couldn't not pay attention now."

Thanks.

For part of the drive, he listens to the latest mixes of War & Leisure, due out December 1st, and finds more to tinker with.

I guess its done, now? That was October 20th.

I love the bass.

This could've been on the last album.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 17 November 2017 11:36 (six years ago) link

yeah this is one of my favorites although i have a lot of them

maura, Friday, 17 November 2017 12:18 (six years ago) link

yoooooooo

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 17 November 2017 13:16 (six years ago) link

"pineapple skies" and "told you so" have gotten me pretty excited for the album... could shape up to be better than wildheart for me :)

dyl, Friday, 17 November 2017 14:56 (six years ago) link

Yeah, this is so dope. Previewed on Snoop's youtube channel iirc

MikoMcha, Friday, 17 November 2017 16:35 (six years ago) link

damn this is electrifying, maybe better than anything on Wildheart. I'd basically written him off after all his garbage singles this year; feels good to be reminded why I used to adore this guy

Evan R, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:13 (six years ago) link

Told You So and Pineapple Skies are both so awesome that I feel bad that I doubted him. I'm still waiting for Skywalker to click.

kitchen person, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:19 (six years ago) link

Yeah I wouldn't hold me breath for that. I dunno if the tracklist has been released, but I'm still holding out hope Skywalker doesn't make the cut. Can't imagine how any album could work around that dog pile.

Evan R, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:23 (six years ago) link

"sky walker" is on it. also you're wrong

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 17 November 2017 18:20 (six years ago) link

"sky walker" is my least favorite among what's widely available so far but i can stomach it now, i accept it and don't feel it will be terribly out of place. honestly i'm just glad ~the marketplace~ is still allowing him to get hits even if they're not going to be the best work he's capable of.

dyl, Friday, 17 November 2017 19:01 (six years ago) link

monotony, Monday, 27 November 2017 06:39 (six years ago) link

the fuck is he still doing with J. Cole

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 27 November 2017 11:25 (six years ago) link

His second verse is shameful but I don't mind Cole on tracks like this. There's something so anonymous and nondescript about his rapping that his verses feel like an unintentional throwback to the NJS days, before guest raps went to big names or artists with visions and personalities. Back then it always used to sound like the rap came from, like, a backup dancer or friend of the producer who just happened to raise his hand and volunteer to lend the track some color. Cole raps about on par with one of those guys.

Evan R, Monday, 27 November 2017 14:36 (six years ago) link

miguel continuing to align himself with corny rappers, you don't say

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 27 November 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link

reminds me of seeing janet last week and having to suffer through the cole verse on "no sleeep" being needlessly piped through the soundsystem

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 27 November 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link

was pleasantly surprised when his voice popped up during the song on the closing credits of Coco.
