couldn't make it through the vid sorry

marcos, Thursday, 28 September 2017 18:28 (six years ago) link

actually, I thought the link was this terrible thing. My apologies.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 September 2017 18:29 (six years ago) link

there were a couple kurt vile tunes i dug from a few years back but that's about as deep as i can go. his hair is beautiful though and i wish i had it

courtney barnett's music is brutally bad

marcos, Thursday, 28 September 2017 18:30 (six years ago) link

xp yeah Alfred I was not into that first single at all. this new one really won me over, psyched for the album now

flappy bird, Thursday, 28 September 2017 18:43 (six years ago) link

have heard very little Kurt Vile before these two songs & his singing on the verses reminds me a lot of Daniel Johnston

flappy bird, Friday, 29 September 2017 05:40 (six years ago) link

good but i can't help thinking it'd be better as just a KV song.

I think CB is okay-to-good but I expect her to only get better, maybe as she sheds the idea that she's some kind of lyrical observational savant

rip van wanko, Friday, 29 September 2017 06:55 (six years ago) link

Nice tune

nostormo, Friday, 29 September 2017 07:58 (six years ago) link

A dream couple, somehow this is a proof that 1+1>2.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Friday, 29 September 2017 18:42 (six years ago) link

Over Everything is like a David Kilgour song with guest vocals by James Yorkston and, uh, Courtney Barnett

erry red flag (f. hazel), Saturday, 30 September 2017 21:46 (six years ago) link

it's really great!

erry red flag (f. hazel), Saturday, 30 September 2017 21:46 (six years ago) link

Yeah, this is good stuff

Week of Wonders (Ross), Saturday, 30 September 2017 22:22 (six years ago) link

Been listening to 'Continental Breakfast' a lot every day since it came out, such a wonderful song. I'll be really happy if there are 2-3 more songs as good as this on the record.

flappy bird, Saturday, 7 October 2017 01:15 (six years ago) link

this album, i like it

Flogging Mommy (diamonddave85), Friday, 13 October 2017 16:48 (six years ago) link

love love the peepin' tom cover

Flogging Mommy (diamonddave85), Friday, 13 October 2017 16:49 (six years ago) link

I'm on the fence, Vile's voice isn't my favorite. But the closer, a cover of Belly's "Untogether", is brilliant.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 13 October 2017 17:22 (six years ago) link

ohhh i really like that one too! didn't know it was a cover

Flogging Mommy (diamonddave85), Friday, 13 October 2017 18:28 (six years ago) link

no way, they cover untogether?

erry red flag (f. hazel), Friday, 13 October 2017 19:00 (six years ago) link

a Belly cover has done more to pique my interest than anything with Kurt Vile's name attached to it ever would

boxedjoy, Saturday, 14 October 2017 08:55 (six years ago) link

I heard Courtney and Kurt recorded a cover of each others songs, anyone have the details?

Courtney Barnett, i like her. Moreso than Curdt Fyle, but they complemented each other well.

Moo Vaughn, Thursday, 15 February 2018 17:58 (six years ago) link

Courtney Barnett, i like your new song.

flappy bird, Thursday, 15 February 2018 18:39 (six years ago) link

Chorus is a play on Atwood "Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them"

kolakube (Ross), Thursday, 15 February 2018 18:53 (six years ago) link

kinda liz phairy

clouds (peanutbuttereverysingleday), Thursday, 15 February 2018 19:43 (six years ago) link

the Kurt and Courtney record really disappointed me considering how much I enjoy each artist's solo work, it was just more half-assed goofiness than even they could get away with. hoping Barnett's new one is a return to form.

evol j, Thursday, 15 February 2018 20:50 (six years ago) link

I had forgotten how much goodwill I had towards her - the debut was disappointing and the collab was not for me - but this is markedly better

boxedjoy, Thursday, 15 February 2018 22:08 (six years ago) link

yea maybe it was the point but I thought the CB and KV record sounded so blah

clouds (peanutbuttereverysingleday), Friday, 16 February 2018 03:19 (six years ago) link

I’m of the irony of posting negatively about a Courtney Barnett song that is about people who write negatively about Courtney Barnett songs. But I’ll go ahead. This one’s not doing much for me. A little bland. I like her a lot but I think she’s at her best when she’s writing narratively (Avant Gardener, Depreston, Sleepless in NY), and I’m hoping there’s more songs like those on the new record. This one feels a little bit like Pedestrian at Best Part Two, except this time it’s against internet trolls rather than the media.

Besides, Lily Allen already wrote the ultimate anti-troll tune with the underrated URL Badman.

triggercut, Friday, 16 February 2018 07:33 (six years ago) link

The Courtney/Kurt album is dope as hell. I think it's the best thing either artist has put out so far and I really hope they do another one.

billstevejim, Friday, 16 February 2018 08:36 (six years ago) link

Just reading this thread and seeing how so few people enjoyed it really bums me out.

billstevejim, Friday, 16 February 2018 08:37 (six years ago) link

my fave from both as well, great little record

niels, Friday, 16 February 2018 09:18 (six years ago) link

yeah I liked it, the halfassed goofiness is a big part of its charm for me

sleeve, Friday, 16 February 2018 14:54 (six years ago) link

It really grew on me. At first I thought it was "blah" as well, but it kept making me go back to it until I discovered its charms. I find Courtney's work isn't always immediate and worth the little effort to connect with it.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 16 February 2018 15:05 (six years ago) link

She actually wrote a melody for change didn't she.

nostormo, Friday, 16 February 2018 17:03 (six years ago) link

damn dude

Love the lazy lope of the song, excited for the album now.

startled macropod (MatthewK), Thursday, 15 March 2018 19:23 (six years ago) link

I don’t see it mentioned on a quick scan of this thread, so I’ll note that her cover of “Shivers,” originally by The Boys Next Door (pre–The Birthday Party), is one of my favorite things she’s recorded:

https://youtu.be/PkG3TI9W31U

The original is awesome, too (and totally different in style) — I had never heard of it until her version. CB’s a great “cover artist”... I love her takes on INXS songs, etc.

“Shivers,” originally by The Boys Next Door

<pedant> actually it was the Young Charlatans, you could almost argue the BND pinched Rowland S Howard so Nick Cave could get his hands on that song </pedant>
Barnett's version is great. Howard, who wrote that song, was a Melbourne legend - the documentary Autoluminescent is pretty magical and a great insight to a unique person.

Cool, thx for the history...

Divine Fits (Britt Daniel from Spoon & Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade) also did an excellent cover of Shivers:

I'd never heard it before that version either, I love it.

nate woolls, Friday, 16 March 2018 08:42 (six years ago) link

It's a fantastic song, any way you slice it...

the dogs in space cover of shivers is the best cover of shivers.

scott seward, Friday, 16 March 2018 15:44 (six years ago) link

whoever did that one.
