holy shit that Playboi Carti album is so good! Magnolia is a right track!

Wish I heard some magic in that Valee album.... the mix is so flat!

do you listen to him rap?

― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 25 September 2017 21:13 (yesterday) Permalink

I mean, the mix doesn't make it easy. Even with headphones it's like listening to an album that's playing in the next room by pressing an empty glass to the wall. If he's got bars I'm not hearing them at all.

Evan R, Tuesday, 26 September 2017 14:46 (six years ago) link

OK just heard his 1988 tape; he can rap

Evan R, Tuesday, 26 September 2017 16:16 (six years ago) link

i don't hear any issues with the mix on VTM. Did you pull it off a streaming service? SoundCloud?

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 26 September 2017 17:40 (six years ago) link

yeah sounds good to me off spotify

Spottie, Tuesday, 26 September 2017 17:44 (six years ago) link

Actually I really like the mix.

Spottie, Tuesday, 26 September 2017 17:45 (six years ago) link

holy shit that hadn't even occurred to me... was listening on Apple Music and the difference between the Soundcloud mix is night and day. The Apple mix is so thin and muddy and clipped, almost sickly. I assumed it was some kind of extreme, deliberate aesthetic statement.

Think this is a fluke or should I be worried Apple Music does this to other tapes? I use it as my main streaming service for everything these days

Evan R, Tuesday, 26 September 2017 17:50 (six years ago) link

anyway rich forever 3 is better than most of the albums everyone's mentioned

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 26 September 2017 17:51 (six years ago) link

two months pass...

Eh? That completely wrecks the transition from 'BLOOD.' into 'DNA.', for one...

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Tuesday, 5 December 2017 19:56 (six years ago) link

wow, Humble is the 50th most played song on Spotify ever, Kendrick's first Billboard #1 too (not counting the Bad Blood feature), I hadn't realized this was his commercial breakthrough but I guess it is?

niels, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 20:15 (six years ago) link

his pop breakthrough; TPAB hit #1 too.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 12 December 2017 20:26 (six years ago) link

yeah his first album sold 250k in its first week, but this is the first album where it truly felt like he was the biggest rapper in the world

Cat Person (Putting Out Fire) (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 12 December 2017 20:35 (six years ago) link

Yeah, while the previous two (three if you count Untitled Unmastered) were big hits with hip-hop heads, critics and music obsessives, this has been the first album where I've started to notice people getting into Kendrick Lamar who perhaps would have found some of his previous work hard going.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Tuesday, 12 December 2017 20:43 (six years ago) link

yeah his first album sold 250k in its first week

weekly reminder to check out Section.80 everybody!

Number None, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 22:53 (six years ago) link

"major label debut"

also, did section.80 release on CD before GKMC came out?

Cat Person (Putting Out Fire) (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 12 December 2017 23:02 (six years ago) link

this is a stupid stunt, what is the point of it.

akm, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 23:27 (six years ago) link

Sell more records

albvivertine, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 00:44 (six years ago) link

i think it's a cool stunt. i'd buy physical if i could.

and yes Section.80 came out on CD before GKMC was out. i saw a bootleg vinyl copy, too, i'm pretty sure.

alpine static, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 01:10 (six years ago) link

i mean if he really wrote this thing to go both directions, this is a *much* cooler reason to buy another copy than the "reloaded" reissue w/ 2 extra trax just in time for Xmas or w/e

alpine static, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 01:11 (six years ago) link

you guys, the obvious difference is the advent of streaming ... hip hop in general is literally bigger (because hip hop's foot print is bigger) but its true size is also being more accurately measured ... this is true across the genre

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 04:25 (six years ago) link

that's interesting, do you have an article or smth to back it up?

niels, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 05:59 (six years ago) link

it's been written about many times

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 11:42 (six years ago) link

Here.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 11:45 (six years ago) link

You can turn on Hot 97 almost anytime and hear a song off Damn within ten minutes and that’s been true for months.

"i think it's a cool stunt. i'd buy physical if i could."

you can, go to a store and buy it. will you? i won't. I already bought the normal album. again, what's the point other than a rerelease?

akm, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 13:17 (six years ago) link

Yes, Hip-Hop is more accurately measured now, but it still feels like Kendrick raised his status this year. His number way outsold and outstreamed More Life, which nobody would've predicted before the year

Cat Person (Putting Out Fire) (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 13:24 (six years ago) link

re: the "reversed" version, it would have been cool if they'd mixed up the transitions to make it run a little smoother.

Simon H., Wednesday, 13 December 2017 13:28 (six years ago) link

damn. is really the proper follow-up to TPAB and the release of “humble” was way more of an event in the immediate than either of the two singles that preceded TPAB. (it also only preceded its associated album by two weeks, so momentum was huge)

maura, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 13:33 (six years ago) link

xp interesting article

not sure if this is because "its true size is being more accurately measured" or because it's growing in size?

that is, if streaming is driving "sales" and young people stream more than old people and young people prefer contemporary genres (not rock) then this would make hip hop bigger, wouldn't make it retroactively bigger tho (unless the argument is that urban genres were always bigger but didn't have sales to match because they were either radio or DJ genres or in some other way their popularity was not sales drive)

niels, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 13:36 (six years ago) link

our local station plays the radio version of Element and Loyalty a lot in addition to Humble

this is a chicken & the egg kind of argument. There was very popular rap music that was largely ignored by industry gatekeepers until streaming allowed them to measure it, and once they did measure it & have something verifiable to base decisions on, they proceeded to magnify its popularity further

bad

Fetchboy, Saturday, 6 January 2018 09:09 (six years ago) link

this is kind of boring but it's alright. it sounds like a good song to rollerskate to.

akm, Sunday, 7 January 2018 15:44 (six years ago) link

It sounded great at the halftime show last night, he really amped it up. The whole performance was strong, just him alone on stage totally commanding a huge crowd.

hmm I'm happy for Kendrick but I don't find it a particularly convincing performance, not interested in an mp3 of this...

but then very few concerts on American tv from the past 20 years have made much impression on me, don't know why they all have such bad sound when there are hundreds of radio stations with amazing live recordings (w video footage too!) on youtube
