Damn, just discovering her/this record. So good!

yeah she's playing halloween here, stoked

Saw her live last week and it was wonderful. Hiss Spun is my favourite of her records so far. As much as I love the others, they strike me as hit or miss, Abyss included.

Hiss Spun feels like she nailed the aesthetic she was chasing with Abyss and EPs like prayer for the unborn

New album, Birth of Violence, out in September. First single, 'The Mother Road', is already available on Spotify and Apple Music.

Looks like the emphasis will fall on dark folk. Those Jonny Greenwood-esque strings and the climactic outro are wonderful.

doomy, 'down by the river' vibes.

Well, this is wonderful. Not that I was expecting anything else.

For some strange reason the reception to this very good album has been very low key and no buzz anywhere.

I can see why the more metal press aren't covering it as much but I thought the traditional media might have.

Did it get a pitchfork review?

The second half sags a wee bit and overall it's not as impressive as Hiss Spun (my favourite of her albums). None of which explains the neglect – there are some incredible songs in there, starting with the obvious singles ('The Mother Road' and 'Deranged for Rock & Roll'). I'm a fanboy so make of this what you will but it'll certainly make my EOY list.

I've been listening to Chelsea Wolfe a lot lately, particularly during my long covid-19 lockdown walks. I'm constantly floored by how simple her songs are - two or three common chords - and so beautiful. Great song writing.

I had no idea that she'd teamed up with Jess Gowrie (who played drums on Birth of Violence) to drop an album tomorrow under the guise of... Mrs. Piss. Looking forward to it:

This is pretty great, unexpectedly Kim Gordon-esque here and there, sometimes more punkish than doomish, although the latter is unsurprisingly predominant. The industrial underpinnings are a nice touch and hearken back to Abyss. Gowrie's drumming is typically excellent. I just wish it were longer – it feels like an EP.

I'm not normally a huge fan of hers, but this is great! Reminds me a little of the first Savages, but a lot messier.

has this happened before and if not how not

Not to my knowledge, no.

They were supposed to tour Australia and NZ together last year. Hopefully a sign of more things to come.

She's on the new Xiu Xiu as well (along with Haley Fohr, Liz Harris, Owen Pallet, Alice Bag).

Chelsea Wolfe helps Stewart turn The Cure’s “One Hundred Years,” a favorite of his since high school, into pulsating industrial music that radiates intensity.

I am 100% here for Chelsea Wolfe and Emma Ruth Rundle

not so much for Chelsea Wolfe and Xiu Xiu

Same. I don't get Xiu Xiu at all.

the stuff from the new album giving me flashbacks to Lamb and Curve! in a good way. maybe i'm due for a 21st century trip hop phase. she really is perfect for someone who needs a more goth lana del rey in their life.

the ebm vibe is strong on the new stuff too. you could remix it all really well.

Thanks for this. I'd no idea she had a new album out.

Not actually out for a few more weeks, (Feb 9, iirc), but definitely looking forward to it.

My LP hasn't arrived yet and I might wait for it to come to listen for the first time rather than stream it, but has anyone heard it yet?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 9 February 2024 18:39 (two months ago) link

its of a piece with the tracks that have come out already. dark. clanking. beats. moody. industrial.

scott seward, Friday, 9 February 2024 19:04 (two months ago) link

I gave in and put it on, its sounding really great. Pretty much the album I was hoping for (and thankfully sounds nothing like Lamb - which had me worried)

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 10 February 2024 00:48 (two months ago) link

sorry, i didn't mean to scare you. it was just reminding me of that era in some ways. i am actually not a Lamb expert. but i think they got doomy on occasion.

scott seward, Saturday, 10 February 2024 07:13 (two months ago) link

I think the fact you said it had that kinda doomy industrial meets curve vibe was enough to make me think nah it wont be like Lamb. Lamb were one of my pet hates along with Moloko that put me off the whole trip-hop thing back in the day.

It seems like a natural follow up/progression to her more doom records of a few years ago.
