apparently the countdown was a hoax

can anyone explain why wikipedia says "planned disbandment" and the RS review says it's their last album? i haven't been able to find any info on that

they released shirts last year that said "brand new 2000-2018"

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 September 2017 23:55 (six years ago) link

ahh ok

just another (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 14:05 (six years ago) link

they're a cryptic band though and i don't really trust them to follow through on it

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 15:49 (six years ago) link

i'm finding myself really moved by "in the water". this album is basically reminding me why i was obsessed with this band in high school

k3vin k., Sunday, 24 September 2017 03:31 (six years ago) link

and yeah, "batter up"....damn

k3vin k., Sunday, 24 September 2017 03:50 (six years ago) link

this album gets better and better with every listen. so many unexpected turns

k3vin k., Tuesday, 26 September 2017 03:29 (six years ago) link

yeah loving it. still getting to know it.

Spottie, Tuesday, 26 September 2017 04:06 (six years ago) link

That opening to "Waste" sounds so much like The Cranberries' "Zombie" it throws me off every time

Evan R, Wednesday, 27 September 2017 20:18 (six years ago) link

ha!

this album is so richly varied. the flawless shoegaze of "no control"; "desert", which basically sounds like jesse doing a stephen malkmus song; and of course morrissey all over.

my current favorite moment is the bridge to "could never be heaven"

godddddd is dead

k3vin k., Thursday, 28 September 2017 02:16 (six years ago) link

well said

I do love this album but it's so despairing I find myself having to limit my exposure to it somewhat

K this is good

And Modest Mouse in "Same Logic", and Tool in "137", and Weezer in "No Control"... It's very distracting.

I'm going to have to edit the shit out of all these interludes tagged to the end of a lot of these songs. Wish most of them were their own songs.

i love the unresolved punk song at the end of “no control”

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 30 September 2017 00:44 (six years ago) link

The guitar solo in "137" is the most glorious musical moment of 2017.

can you YSI if you do this? after listening to it for the 20th time theyre really starting to get on my nerves

flopson, Friday, 6 October 2017 19:57 (six years ago) link

You can easily do this yourself with a lossless MP3 editor. The best one I know is MP3DirectCut (Windows only).

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 7 October 2017 06:05 (six years ago) link

ya i could do it on audacity right now tbh i'm just bizy and figured if someone else had already done it

flopson, Saturday, 7 October 2017 20:52 (six years ago) link

the skits are rly cool and creepy the first 20 listens tho

flopson, Saturday, 7 October 2017 20:53 (six years ago) link

yeah i like the "skits" (not sure that's what i'd call them tho)

k3vin k., Saturday, 7 October 2017 20:57 (six years ago) link

Every night you were tripping out
In the morning you were coming down
If it's breaking your heart, if nothing is fun
Don't lose hope, my son
This is the last one

i don't usually get that stoked about live concerts even for bands i love but this is one of the albums where i need to see them touring this material

flopson, Saturday, 7 October 2017 21:17 (six years ago) link

largely because i need a socially acceptable outlet to singalong to some of these choruses in public

flopson, Saturday, 7 October 2017 21:17 (six years ago) link

is this band/album too normie for the rest of the 1975 cru?

k3vin k., Friday, 13 October 2017 23:40 (six years ago) link

tim f is a fan of the devil and god iirc

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 14 October 2017 03:42 (six years ago) link

i have a new favorite every night. this album gives and gives. listening to new music from this band (my favorite in high school/early college 10 years ago) when it's THIS GOOD fills me with a unique sort of nostalgia. or a sense of completeness/closure, idk

k3vin k., Sunday, 15 October 2017 04:19 (six years ago) link

kev you should check out
thread of best rock album of year 2017, 'a black mile to the surface' by manchester orchestra

Spottie, Sunday, 15 October 2017 04:27 (six years ago) link

ha yeah i remember digging manchester orchestra a little back in the day, they toured with brand new at least once iirc. ill give it a spin

k3vin k., Sunday, 15 October 2017 04:39 (six years ago) link

yeah I saw them together around 2009

Spottie, Sunday, 15 October 2017 04:43 (six years ago) link

first time I listened to the intro to SF I was afraid Jesse had gone full Tom Delonge

botex (rip van wanko), Sunday, 15 October 2017 20:53 (six years ago) link

and then the first few strums of Can't Get Out had me thinking he'd gone full Jeff Mangum

jesse is an obsessive NMH fan, if you heard something it's quite possibly intentional

cool show last night at the worst venue ever. jesse said we're gonna see them a couple more times in the next 14 months in chicago, whatever that means

Flogging Mommy (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 14:11 (six years ago) link

I only just caught the "nailed down" pun lol

difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 17 October 2017 14:28 (six years ago) link

i just realized that the reason "i am a nightmare" is so awesome is because it's basically a gaslight anthem song

k3vin k., Thursday, 19 October 2017 01:19 (six years ago) link

The show was amazing tonight but two notes 1) Jessie clearly hates deja ententu only played two songs from it and before sic transit he sarcastically said “the hit song” 2) I think he’s super depressed? I mean the new material is bleak af he’s playing lots of daisy not really engaging with the audience lots of dark imagery of soldiers in the background. But great show. But I hope he’s okay.

Mordy, Thursday, 19 October 2017 03:09 (six years ago) link

honestly that was one of my first thoughts when I first heard the new album

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 19 October 2017 08:59 (six years ago) link

he’s playing lots of daisy

is this a euphemism for.. drugs?

flopson, Friday, 20 October 2017 01:11 (six years ago) link

the album

k3vin k., Friday, 20 October 2017 01:25 (six years ago) link

lol i don't know the first thing about their catalogue other than having sic transit gloria on a burned cdr in high school. checking out the 'devil and jesus' album u guys were talking about rn tho

flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 04:24 (six years ago) link

flopson!

starting my emo phase late at 26

flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 17:09 (six years ago) link

haha i just listened to YFW -> DE -> 2006 all in succession on a car ride last night and it brought be straight back to high school, screaming out all the lyrics in the car alone. if you like the new album i'd start with devil and god and then work backwards to see how much you can stomach. the old stuff is good for what it is (music for kids) but it's not something i can really imagine listening to all the time anymore

this new album has pretty much cemented brand new as one of my all-time favorite bands tho, or at least made me a little more willing to say that in public lol

k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 17:33 (six years ago) link

2006 demos, i mean
