i'm all for hounding Vice for its past, they used the guise of transgressiveness to be so nakedly bigoted that it's still kind of horrifying.

it is ironic cos when i was in art school taking modern art history that point when performance art and postmodernism came into view seemed to also be when critical feminism, POC, and other marginalized voices started getting into traditional art spaces

I played a show opening for the Horrors and we had bought a dozen or so goldfish. The plan was that the live goldfish would be in champagne glasses at the front of the stage, and that during the show we would knock them into the audience. Lead singer of the Horrors heard about this and pitched a fit and the club owner wouldn't let us do it. Several members of our band were even appearing on a split 7" with him, and he still wouldn't let us go through with that plan.
Of course, the goldfish all ended up in the toilet. A more dignified way to go?

That Grass Widow review lingers in my mind every time I see a Vice article appear in my timeline. People are quick to talk about the terrible value of The Daily Mail on society but realistically Vice has had a deeper and more subversive reach with its brand of pseudo-ironic alt-right values and it continually amazes me that they've become legit and respected.

I hate how the influence of Vice as a writing voice is so ubiquitous now. Its easy to write "rip off my testicles" keyboard bashing rants and the tone of snark and snobbery is just so off-putting. It feels like there's no room for genuine enthusiasm and excitement or calm critique anywhere and the fact Vice is such a prominent online voice is a huge part of this.
