I still find it a bit weird that Diane is voiced by Alison Brie

but anyway this might have been the most consistently good season yet, and the most brutal

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 12:32 (six years ago) link

It's a seriously good show, is the thing. Like a comedy that merits the attention of a drama or something, I dunno.

albvivertine, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 12:57 (six years ago) link

I've found its very easy to zone out and miss a lot of the jokes AND important plot points in this, it requires an amount of focus when I'm used to letting shows like this kind of wash over me. You sort of have to retrain yourself to pay attention vs most tv, I also found myself rewinding not just to catch jokes but also moments where a character inadvertently says something profound about depression or bj's psychology etc

This. I typically watch TV while doing random shit on my phone, but I went back and rewatched BoJack season three and got so much more out of it. Who knew that I should pay attention to what I'm watching.

Lots of variations on the phrase "the inimitable side butt" have been popping into my head this week.

the future child episode was the one that wrecked me this season

I Love You, Fancybear (symsymsym), Friday, 22 September 2017 02:08 (six years ago) link

that episode was almost too brutal

imago, Friday, 22 September 2017 10:38 (six years ago) link

still not sure that the second episode wasn't the most intense. amazing move to throw that one in after the beyond-zany opener

imago, Friday, 22 September 2017 10:39 (six years ago) link

I totally missed the framing of the future child episode the first time I watched it. But also wrecked when I got it the second time through.

Jeff, Friday, 22 September 2017 11:16 (six years ago) link

That penultimate episode with his mother reliving all her memories was an absolute gut punch. Beatrice has been such a horrible character but this season has really recontextualized her.

two weeks pass...

I just watched the "stupid piece of shit" ep last night and was in tears at the end, it was way too close to home.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 8 October 2017 23:46 (six years ago) link

season 1 finale hit close to home for me..find this show hard to continue to watch for that reason, some of this is so raw and familiar - not sure I need to be reminded

Ready for season 5.

Jeff, Friday, 10 November 2017 11:34 (six years ago) link

‘Future child’ was a definite gut punch episode for me.

Series 3 got pretty dark, so I wasn’t sure where things would go with this one, but it was pretty strong.

michaellambert, Friday, 10 November 2017 12:36 (six years ago) link

of course it went deeper into the family. probably the smartest depiction of the psychoanalytic process this side of In Treatment? one of the best series of television i can recall really. what the hell have they got in store for us

imago, Friday, 10 November 2017 12:51 (six years ago) link

tt made the point to me that the newspaper subscription episode in either series 2 or 3 is literally a therapy session and an extremely truthful depiction to boot

Starring Candice Bergen!

three weeks pass...

i watched like 5 episodes during spring break (or winter break? i forgot) and then binged the rest of the episodes over the last week. holy shiiiiiiiiiiiiitt i love this show. comedy highs are todd and mr peanutbutter on terrible idea development jags ("what if there was a WEST dakota?" "i dunno, isn't that up to the state department?"

i have a strained relationship with my mom PLUS my grandma (and greatgrandma) spent their final years with dementia, guess which episode fucked me upppppppppp

Bojack is absolutely brilliant
Never thought I'd be almost crying to a Nina Simone song on a snarky cartoon horse show

This letter. Apparently BoJack has gotten the lead in a show called Philbert. And now we know how it ends.

Frederik B, Thursday, 6 September 2018 21:21 (five years ago) link

I like how that letter simultaneously takes the piss out of Nic Pizzolatto and Matt Weiner.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 September 2018 22:19 (five years ago) link

Where's that letter from?

I don't know how it makes fun of True Detective or Mad Men. I only recognize the "detective chasing himself" from Donald Kaufman's script in Adaptation.

adam the (abanana), Thursday, 6 September 2018 22:39 (five years ago) link

Not making fun of the shows themselves per se - the attitude feels copped from Pizzolatto's TD S1-era interviews and photo spreads, and every season of MM would be preceded by Weiner sending a letter to publications telling them what they "weren't allowed" to spoil (eg the date range of the new episodes, etc). Which was, AFAIK, pretty specifically his deal

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 September 2018 23:32 (five years ago) link

Out today?

Yes. Watched the first ep at lunch. Good start.

Jeff, Friday, 14 September 2018 19:58 (five years ago) link

Watched the first two. Very strong start, the second in particular is one of the best first half eps thus far (he says knowing he's forgotten some better and knows underwater was ep 3 or something).

Yeah I was totally wrong about other early episodes. Even just episode 2s - Neil McBeal The Navy Seal, Todd builds Disneyland, Mr Peanutbutter meets Blarn, hut on the lake.

I love this show.

me too, it did nothing at all for me until right at the start of series 3

todd builds disneyland is still one of the funniest things ive ever seen. todd is my favorite.

yes

and episode 7 to follow i mean where's this going

imago, Saturday, 15 September 2018 22:03 (five years ago) link

ok

first season that isn't better than the one before it; still great

imago, Sunday, 16 September 2018 17:50 (five years ago) link

Yes. Parts of it were really great - and once we lift the embargo we can talk about what they were - it never managed to hit the absolute highs of previous seasons and didn't have that real standout moment.
