the faceID thing feels half baked - like seems obvious to me they meant this work in conjunction with touchID (almost like two step) but since they couldn't get touch ID to integrate into the display they just went with faceID instead. just seems bad from a security standpoint. i wonder what the security guys are gonna say

, Tuesday, 12 September 2017 21:16 (six years ago) link

Apple says it's far more secure (1/1million vs 1/50,000 for touch). Mystified by gripes about it, tbh.

The speed is the thing I’m curious about. Someone said 1500ms to unlock? I can type my passcode faster than that. Also I unlock my phone in my pocket when approaching Tube gates

stet, Tuesday, 12 September 2017 21:28 (six years ago) link

okay but if i'm sleeping and somebody points my phone at me will that unlock the phone?

, Tuesday, 12 September 2017 21:29 (six years ago) link

No, you need to be “attentive” — looking at it, basically

stet, Tuesday, 12 September 2017 21:43 (six years ago) link

Do the new 6s's still have the aux jack? I have a 6s and it's great, whenever it breaks I'd rather just get a new one for cheaper than I did a few years ago & skip this FaceID shit.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 12 September 2017 22:03 (six years ago) link

why did they skip 9

flappy bird, Tuesday, 12 September 2017 22:04 (six years ago) link

I can think of dozens of scenarios where I would want/need to unlock without looking at my phone. Having to stare at it just sounds like a hassle. And the new design looks kinda... cheap?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 12 September 2017 22:05 (six years ago) link

Xpost for the same reason Mahler tried to delay composing his ninth - it's the one you die after

yeah but skipping right to this?

SE isn't at the end of the road yet! Will be getting iOS 11.

so that's why it takes 1.5 seconds? touchID is almost instantaneous by this point

the X feels like a hell of a gamble considering first model jitters with pretty much every model of everything

"it's all screen".. except for the weird black wedge that comes down to obscure the top middle part of the screen that no other iphone screen has ever had?? wtf

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 00:26 (six years ago) link

Most of the time the small area to the right and left of the sensors will just have the usual signal and battery gauges. If what I've seen in iOS 11 builds holds for the final release, that area will usually be blacked out except for the signal/battery info, so it's not all that obvious.

Lee626, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 00:37 (six years ago) link

The one picture I've seen of the X looks interesting to me but a) give me a fukken headphone jack, and b) fuk u, Face ID

otm, the marketing drivel on the apple site iirc uses words like "seamless" and "perfection" despite the whacking great maximilian wedge across the top

Best review so far.

At least they didn't call it iPhone Pro.

I wonder how apple would approach the hacky sack

calstars, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 01:26 (six years ago) link

the single dumbest thing about my 6 is the way it confuses gestures (swiping up from the bottom randomly triggers a tab in the app, swiping down in the home screen randomly triggers spotlight search etc), so the X's heavy reliance on gestures makes me apprehensive to say the least

resisted 7 bcs of hp jack issue but now wondering whether it's that much of a deal given they hand you a "dongle" (*barf*). Is there any obvious quality loss from that setup? Do the remote/mic functions still work?

Only vaguely relevant, but I made this recently:

the lightning port dongle works fine for me - it just stays attached to the plug on my headphones so it's no different from using a headphone jack

French media is noting that the X costs only 10 euros less than the French minimum wage monthly salary.

droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 16:40 (six years ago) link

My headphone jack is starting to die of old age and is a surprisingly expensive fix. Seems like the lightning port itself might hold up to more mechanical abuse?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 20:11 (six years ago) link

tbh I figured there were some engineers at apple who were always going nuts about this analog interface on the side of their phone

I would imagine at least one guy had a head melting experience when Square and others made devices that plugged into the headphones port

mh, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 20:55 (six years ago) link

I thought my headphone was fucked but there was just a bunch of lint in it.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 21:06 (six years ago) link

lack of headphone jack is slightly less problematic now that there's wireless charging

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 21:18 (six years ago) link

every couple of months or so i like to go in to the headphone jack, and lightning port, with a toothpick. sometimes you end up with great stuff coming out

, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 22:18 (six years ago) link

yeah same, i found the end of a paper clip works best.

Spottie, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 22:26 (six years ago) link

the phone is getting all of the attention of course, but the real news of the announcement was LTE on the watch. Which means I can leave my phone at home and go for a walk in the park. I'd like to try it just sitting in my pocket without a band, treating it like an iphone nano. and to enjoy some music from it would be good too.
