Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

reminds me of a conversation I had with my mom not long ago

"I didn't even let you kids watch South Park!"
"Mom, South Park didn't come out until I was in my last year of high school. You didn't let us watch The Simpsons for the first few years it was on"
"Did I let you watch South Park?"
"It was on Comedy Central and you didn't have cable television until I moved out, so I guess not"

oh, all of it, tho I don't really buy in to moral panics about any particular cultural form's negative impact on the youths

I think there are other social and parenting processes that shd prepare your children to recognize a bigoted sociopath when they see one

I don't think there are strong reasons to stop kids from watching a lot of things, but this whole "ehh just let kids watch whatever and don't put it in context" thing has to be something

but yeah, 30 year olds don't get Cartman is bad either, so they're not going to impart great things to their children

I think one reason it might not be straightforward for everyone to grok that cartman is bad is because he almost never suffers any consequences on the show. On top of being hateful and entitled, he's also a murderer, a cheat, a liar and a thief and he's been getting away with all of it for decades.

I was being partly ironic Tom, I don't think Parker & Stone see him as the "bad guy" so much as a handy conduit for jokes they'd otherwise struggle to get away with

they can't do real humor about politics, just dumb jokes and shlock

never forget the mind-numbing mediocrity of "that's my bush"

that show was hilarious, mostly because there was like no political humor whatsoever

all last season he was performatively woke, not sure if it was ironic or not, whether it had a point or not

I dunno if I'd blame the behavior of the characters so much as the general attitude of maintaining ironic distance from everything because actually caring about things means you're intellectually compromised

yeah, the ongoing "all things are bad or worthy of mocking, maybe some a little more than other, but take nothing seriously" strays from the "we're equal opportunity mockers of things" after a certain point

like, great, you can mock anything and everything, good for you

it is up to the creators to decide what goes into a work. it will be interesting to see what they do w the new game. they need to make some points in favor of progressivism.

last game featured lots of actual Nazi speeches sampled for the bad guys. at one point you are hearing this stuff for hours while in rpg random battles. millions of kids hearing this stuff is not a good idea. kind of amazed they got away with that tbh. if that game came out post-Trump it would be a different story.

even if they claim to mock everything equally, that sort of apathetic libertarian 'ideology' is always going to align more closely with the right than the left because the left pushes for more change and change requires caring and caring is uncool

I was typing out more words about it, but yes, ironic racism is completely indistinguishable from racism as a third party, even if you're "joking" with your friend and using slurs against them and they're a member of that group. If you do that all the time, you'll end up meeting someone new and immediately associating all the bullshit you think is fun to scream at your friends with them.
