Back in the late seventies I lived above an older single woman. I would spend the evening sitting quietly in a chair reading a book until perhaps 11 pm at which time I'd stand up and move about a bit, getting ready to go to bed, setting the woman below me to pounding the ceiling with a broom handle. I finally knocked on her door and explained that I'd tried walking around without placing my feet on the floor, but nothing I'd tried had worked and I was open to suggestions.

I just saw someone on Twitter asking how people "recreate joy and gratitude every day" and I kind of want to sprout venom-dripping fangs and tear out his throat. I mean, just a little.

I was walking down By the sea today and there's gates to enclose the path. Cyclists are in both lanes and totally not paying attention to lanes. Shit

I am IA that someone in the SCPA decided that, of all the possible names for a giant iguana, they'd choose "Iggy".

People who don't pronounce words the proper way. Like, they say the word as if it's spelled a completely different way. Example: saying the word, "button" as if it were spelled with an i, not an o. And then, to top it off, it seems like they go out of their way to make the most of their ill pronunciation. So, it comes out like "butt-in." And, overwhelmingly, this is native english speakers who have no excuse.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Saturday, 16 September 2017 02:44 (six years ago) link

A true moment of irrational anger this week: when I suddenly realized my over-ear headphones were switched around (because a solo was playing in the wrong ear).

nb: the spelling of a word in English isn't necessarily a good guide to its pronunciation

Always mad at people riding bikes with no hands, but extra angry when they are egregious about it. Like, hands in their pockets, or (impressive or not) the guy I was biking behind the other day who was air drumming while biking. Yeah, that takes balance, good for you, but at the same time, why tempt fate? Why add an extra step or two if you need to brake or swerve? This dude was all chill and air drumming, but he was also going so slow, and I couldn't pass him without startling him and getting closer to traffic and putting us both at risk because he was so into his music, air drumming along.

Incidentally, when I was up in Canada I learned it's apparently illegal to bike with headphones on. Canada=rational.

i probably complained about this before and i'm not one of those people who feels they have a right to park right in front of their house but whenever i have that spot and i leave for a short time, my neighbor goes and moves her car into it. it's like she's watching out the window for me to leave. today she did it and she was parked about 100 ft away before. weird.

Moodles, Sunday, 17 September 2017 23:20 (six years ago) link

Irrational in the sense that I spose I am a bit of a control freak: we have 2 dishwashers in our fancy new work kitchen, and yet people persist in just rinsing off a plate/cup/spoon and putting in the dishrack.

More irrationally, I get mad at these people because they toss the spoons into the rack bit where the plates go instead of popping them into the cutlery holder. ARE YOU LOT SAVAGES? I swear some people I work with must have maids or wives who do all the work at home.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 19 September 2017 01:22 (six years ago) link

That's probably the best you can hope for in a work kitchen.

Moodles, Tuesday, 19 September 2017 03:00 (six years ago) link

Compared to our old work kitchen it certainly is - at least this one being brand new and fancy is making people take a bit more care and not leave 2 week old slimy mugs in the sink :/

ppl who just assume you are up to speed on everything in their lives always, no matter how much time has passed

my friend always starts her conversations in the middle, like "i am so stressed about the trip" etc

WHAT TRIP? we havent spoken in a month, what are you talking about.

she's completely detail/noun deficient. it's maddening.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 22 September 2017 04:20 (six years ago) link

My mother does that to me all the time lol. We only speak once a fortnight or so and she assumes I just know eeeeverything that happened with Mrs smith up the street and her carbuncle.

Occasionally I have the urge to say to my dad, remember when you were 47 and midcareer with teenage kids and working a job with lots of commitments and pressure, now imagine your mother asking whether you might like to catch up over lunch in the middle of the work week.

It's like what you think you're so cool and powerful and rich that you have to show off your masculine prowess with your fancy ass motor that makes the most godawful obnoxious noise on the road? Get the fuck out of here with that showoff-ey bullshit

"we need a meter reading from you". ok, that's fine, saves sending a man out.

but i got 3 different popups from the website when trying to fill in one lousy text box. "would you like a smart meter?" "would you like to chat now?" "would you like to give feedback?"

actually, yes to that last one. stop interrupting me when i'm trying to help you.

koogs, Saturday, 23 September 2017 11:51 (six years ago) link

that last one is disgusting. "how did we do????" uh how about fucking off and doing the thing first?

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 23 September 2017 12:56 (six years ago) link

web sites do that all the time the second you load the page, jesus christ just piss off

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 23 September 2017 12:57 (six years ago) link

my old work wanted to do that with the website i was responsible for. i said we should let people look at a few pages first, but i never got through to them. in the end i quit for other reasons, but they never built the nag screen because they stopped doing everything because i wasn't there to run the fucking thing, so i think that means i won.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 23 September 2017 13:06 (six years ago) link

You're a hero. Vast swathes of the internets are dead to me. All the pop-ups, all the newsletters, all the paywalls, more goddamn pop-ups. Fuck it, I wanna burn the internet to all hell.

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 23 September 2017 13:14 (six years ago) link

(the 'feedback' popup did appear immediately after i'd submitted the reading. the 'chat' popup was actually a pop-under that appeared whilst i was filling in the feedback popup)

when the bank does this it scares me. i'm trying to transfer my rent here and you want to chat? at least i can adblock the animations.

bank is also terrible for menu rollovers - go to click on the login button at the top, mouseover their 'menu bar' and 3/4s of a page worth of options flashes up and then disappears.

koogs, Saturday, 23 September 2017 14:57 (six years ago) link

Clicking any phrase that doesn't say "E-mail" and having my long-forgotten Mail app pop up because the link was an email address. Even "Contact Us" shouldn't be linked to an email.

Just clicked "Start Now" on a website and had that happen.

pplains, Saturday, 23 September 2017 17:56 (six years ago) link

Was it a website that teaches you how to e-mail?

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 23 September 2017 18:00 (six years ago) link

No, it was an online service that tests to see if your Mail app still works, but that's beside the point.

pplains, Saturday, 23 September 2017 18:27 (six years ago) link
