I had one job interview once where they set me up with a really blurry and flickery monitor on the other side of a massive wide conference table, way further away than you'd ever have a monitor you were actually trying to work on. Oh, and it was a different version of the software to the one I'd used before. I didn't even finish the task they'd set.

They still said I did better than anyone else on the practical test but actually they wanted someone to do sales calls and knowing how to use Crystal Reports was just incidental, despite being the only thing they asked for in the ad or tested me on. ???

I actually work a block away from there now and that company isn't there any more so I guess I was better off not being hired there anyway.

I was told when I interviewed as an entry-level customer service rep at my company, 13 years ago, that I had to pass a Windows 95 test. I thought for sure this was a typo (it was 2004, after all).

Lo and behold, I get to the Math/English/word processing tests, and there it is, a Windows 95 test. Which I hadn't used in, like, almost a decade.

None of the machines in the office used it either. Never figured out why we had to pass that, but it didn't factor heavily into our final score.

nowadays if you can say your name without drooling acid into a spitoon, you pretty much get hired

I only mean for my company, natch - getting in as entry level suddenly became easy. Well, if you're young (neither of my folks got even close to the final interview). kinda found it ridiculous how hard a time both my parents had finding any kind of employment after being continuously employed for decades.

the companies that use those screener tests with multiple choice personality questions are the worst. basically have to lie to even pass those cos it only accepts perfect robotic human beings. except you don't know the right way to even 'lie' on them going in.

yeah multiple choice ones suck, also most government jobs involve a lot of scenario question answering. It can take several hours to apply for like 2 jobs nowadays, it's pretty ridic

applicant tracking systems (that screen out PDFs) and only look for key words used to make me IA, but now I just try to beat them

Back in the late seventies I lived above an older single woman. I would spend the evening sitting quietly in a chair reading a book until perhaps 11 pm at which time I'd stand up and move about a bit, getting ready to go to bed, setting the woman below me to pounding the ceiling with a broom handle. I finally knocked on her door and explained that I'd tried walking around without placing my feet on the floor, but nothing I'd tried had worked and I was open to suggestions.

People who don't pronounce words the proper way. Like, they say the word as if it's spelled a completely different way. Example: saying the word, "button" as if it were spelled with an i, not an o. And then, to top it off, it seems like they go out of their way to make the most of their ill pronunciation. So, it comes out like "butt-in." And, overwhelmingly, this is native english speakers who have no excuse.

A true moment of irrational anger this week: when I suddenly realized my over-ear headphones were switched around (because a solo was playing in the wrong ear).

nb: the spelling of a word in English isn't necessarily a good guide to its pronunciation

Always mad at people riding bikes with no hands, but extra angry when they are egregious about it. Like, hands in their pockets, or (impressive or not) the guy I was biking behind the other day who was air drumming while biking. Yeah, that takes balance, good for you, but at the same time, why tempt fate? Why add an extra step or two if you need to brake or swerve? This dude was all chill and air drumming, but he was also going so slow, and I couldn't pass him without startling him and getting closer to traffic and putting us both at risk because he was so into his music, air drumming along.

Incidentally, when I was up in Canada I learned it's apparently illegal to bike with headphones on. Canada=rational.

i probably complained about this before and i'm not one of those people who feels they have a right to park right in front of their house but whenever i have that spot and i leave for a short time, my neighbor goes and moves her car into it. it's like she's watching out the window for me to leave. today she did it and she was parked about 100 ft away before. weird.

Where I grew up, the proper response to that would be to slash her tires

Irrational in the sense that I spose I am a bit of a control freak: we have 2 dishwashers in our fancy new work kitchen, and yet people persist in just rinsing off a plate/cup/spoon and putting in the dishrack.

More irrationally, I get mad at these people because they toss the spoons into the rack bit where the plates go instead of popping them into the cutlery holder. ARE YOU LOT SAVAGES? I swear some people I work with must have maids or wives who do all the work at home.

That's probably the best you can hope for in a work kitchen.

Compared to our old work kitchen it certainly is - at least this one being brand new and fancy is making people take a bit more care and not leave 2 week old slimy mugs in the sink :/

yeah my folks travel interstate about once a month and expect me to know which dates they're leaving and coming back on this the 8th trip of the year, in the middle of the zillion things going on in my life

Occasionally I have the urge to say to my dad, remember when you were 47 and midcareer with teenage kids and working a job with lots of commitments and pressure, now imagine your mother asking whether you might like to catch up over lunch in the middle of the work week.
